This paper introduces and comments on Theory of lexical givenness/newness by Baumann, Schumacher and Riester. It deals with the major problems with existing theories of information packaging, the definition and classification of lexical given-ness/newness, the definition and classification of referential givenness/newness, the correlations between accent and lexical given-ness/newness and referential givenness/newness and the contribution of the theory to information packaging theories and the ma-jor problems with the theory.
