The paper begins with briefly mentioning the fact of wide-spread application of Internet, and the explosive growth of communication traffic. Then, it describes the rapid increase in transmission capacity of optical fiber by using wavelength division multiplexing systems. The paper points out that the packet switching would be required for data network. Finally, it describes the bright prospects of optical Internet in the near future.
