When We Were Orphans, the latest novel of the Japaneseborn British novelist Kazuo Ishiguro, objectively and coolly represents the SinoBritish relationship before 1940 through a personal tragedy. It not only reveals the history of how some British merchants gained enormous profits from the opium trade, but also bravely questions the conceptions of eurocentrism from the historical point of view.
