The postmodernist novel V. , by the contemporary American writer Thomas Pynchon, applies the Second Principle of Thermodynamics of physics allegorically to the observation of the human world. It portrays graphically the blind, impatient existence and the vague, illusory pursuit of the mundane people, the fruitless or even disastrous release of human energy, which eventually results in the increase of entropy in society, the horrible prospect of heat death for the earth, and the practical ways to prevent all this from happening. Confronting reality vis-a-vis and critiquing it sagaciously, this novel of complex structure and multiple style proves to be a work of timely admonishment and superb art.
