Rawls holds that justice is the dominant subject in modern political philosophy and that 'justice always indicates equality. ' As a result, equality takes the place of freedom as the motif in his political theory. According to him, freedom and equality are inextricably linked up with each other. Without equality, freedom is but an empty form. This paper tries to evaluate Rawls' historical role in transforming the motif in western political philosophy.
