Objective To observe the clinical efficacy on post- stroke shoulder- hand syndrome( SHS) treated with penetrating acupuncture from Baihui( GV20) to Taiyang( EX- HN5) combined with rehabilitation manipulation. Methods Eighty cases of SHS were randomized into a penetrating acupuncture group and a control group,40 cases in each one. In the penetrating acupuncture group, the penetrating acupuncture from Baihui( GV20) to Taiyang( EX- HN5) combined with rehabilitation manipulation was applied, once a day. In the control group, the rehabilitation manipulation was only used. VAS of the affected limb, swelling degree, the upper limb motor function( Carol),the ability of daily life activity( Bathel) were observed before and after treatment. The clinical efficacy was compared between the two groups. Results After treatment,VAS score,Carol score and Bathel score were different significantly as compared with those before treatment in each group( P < 0. 01). In the penetrating acupuncture group, after treatment, all of the scores were different significantly as compared with those in the control group( P < 0. 01). The remarkable effective rate was 35% after treatment in the penetrating acupuncture group and was 5% in the control group, indicating the significant difference. Conclusion The penetrating acupuncture from Baihui( GV20) to Taiyang( EX-HN5) combined with rehabilitation manipulation is the effective method for post- stroke SHS.
