This article offers an introduction to categorial grammar. Following an account of its development as a theoretical model, the article goes on to discuss the basic conceptual assumptions, methodological devices (including Lambek Calculus) and operational rules shared by its various interpretations, as well as its several extensions. In conclusion, the author calls attention to the numerous advantages the model offers and argues for the necessity of standardizing its notation system.
