Based on the data obtained from the mangrove regions in the Jiulong Jiang Estuary during May 1981 to May 1982,community structure and characters of ground-dwelling macrofauna this area were studied.66 species belonging to 6 Phyla,7 Classes,27 Families,46 Genera were identified.Brachyura crabs of Grapsidae and Ocypodidae, gastropods of Assimineidae and Potamididae, and mud-skippers are major animal categories.Dominant species are Metaplax elegans,Uca(Deltuca)arcuata,Ilyoplax.Spp.,Assiminea scalaris and Periophthalmus cantonensis.Regional study shows, number of species, total densities and biomass of ground-dwelling animals increase with the raise of mean sea water salinity.Their vertical distribution is related to sediment water content. There is no marked seasonal variation in both species and species number, though there are two densities peaks in the year. The first peak occurred,in July, was caused by crabs, the other one,in January, was caused by gastropods, mainly Assiminea scalaris. The variation of diversity and the characters of dominaut species in each station exhibit the fauna at five stations are the same in essence:Comparing with the mudflat absent of mangrove the ground-dwelling fauna of mangrove region has the following two characters:the first, among all the species,80%are epifauna, and the second, the species diversity is low and the species population is large. The high sediment pore water H2S content and the shallowness of RPD(Redox Potential Discontinuity)depth cause many infauna to exist. It reduces the species richness of communities. The high organic material content of sediment greatly raises the densities of dominant species and the productivity of ground d(?)lling fauna, but reduces the psecies evenness of communities.
