In the novel Bone,Chinese American writer Fae Myenne Ng has employed the space as the major means to construct the Chinese American cultural identities. The Chinese immigrants from different generations and backgrounds take up diverse attitudes to the Chinatown, which reflect their choices between Chinese and American cultures. The first generation prefers to be confined to the Chinatown, which shows their attachment to traditional Chinese culture. The second generation, however, has more complicated feelings.Nina and Ona go to the extremes, while the narrator of Leila compromises and settles down in the borderland between Chinatown and American mainstream society. Thus this thesis attempts to explore the space writings and the profound meaning of borderland for constructing the Chinese American hybrid cultural identities and subjectivity.
