In the design of reconstructed Songhuajiang River Extra Large Bridge, a comprehensive comparison was made with respect to bridge location and bridge type, and hydraulic model test was conducted. Steel girder used for the bridge is the largest span ever in China in chilly area. Selection of steel girder and overcoming of pressure from deep ice is the key to the bridge. Besides, a new type of heavy-duty steel bearing-hinge axle sliding plate steel bearing was developed for the bridge.
