摘要
历史上地名解释存在因时而异的现象与特点。隋唐时期,茂名县得名解释是以境内河流为主,到宋代以后演变为与晋代道士潘茂相关联,而且后者神化的解释愈益成为主流。文章通过梳理唐宋以来"潘仙"传说的演变,指出潘仙名为"潘茂"而非"潘茂名",进而揭示茂名县是因河流命名,并非因神仙命名。地方社会在地名解释中附会神仙的倾向,是借此表达地方开化已久,谋求与国家整合的正统性诉求。
The explanation on geographical name varies from time to time.In Sui and Tang dyrasties,Maoming,whose name derived from the river,associated with Jin dynasty Taoist named Pan Mao in Song dynasty.The Taoist’s deification had become increasingly popular.The paper,based on the evolution of Pan-Deity in Tang and Song dynasties,presents Pan-Deity is Pan Mao,not Pan Maoming and further points out that Maoming originates from river instead of divinity.The local area were incured to recale the toponymy with the Gods to manifest this place was civilized and strive for nationou integration and legitimaey.
