From March to June 1999, five Han tombs were brought to light when the Guyuan Museum built storage rooms for cultural relics on the northern side of its exhibition building. In structure they are earthen pits with wooden chambers(3), a rectangular earthen-pit-cum-cave tomb with a sloping passage(1), and a single brick-arch chamber with a sloping passage(1).
106 pottery, bronze, iron, stone, and wooden objects and 100 wuzhu 五铢 coins were discovered from the tombs. In date, four of the graves belong to the middle and late Western Han period, and one to the early Eastern Han.
Most of the funeral objects in Tombs 3 and 5 are large-sized practical bronzes, suggesting the tomb occupants to have had higher social status. Judging by their form, the structure of their wooden chamber and the combination of their grave goods, these tombs must have been a couple's joint burials in different pits.
The excavation of the five Han tombs has great importance to the archaeology of the Han period in the Ningxia region, especially to the then politics, economy, culture and burial custom in Guyuan and its vicinity.
