In this study, we evaluate the relationship between hypertriglyceridemia and other diseases such as hypertension, coronary heart disease (CHD) and diabetes mellitus (DM) in Chinese People' s Armed Pohce Forces, and we investigate the risk factors of hypertriglyceridemia. Methods The study population comprised 3853 cadres above 35 years through random selection in Chinese People' s Armed Police Forces. Information about the cadres and their families was obtained from detailed clinical and laboratory examination and questionnaire survey. Hypertriglyceridemia was diagnosed when the concentration of fasting serum triglycerdies was above 2.3mmol/L. Results Hypertriglyceridemia is associated with hypertension, CHD and DM (P < 0.01 ), while hypertriglyceridemia is not statically associated with TIA and cerebral infarction though there is a tendency of higher prevalence of hypertriglyceridemia beth in TIA and cerebral infarction groups (P > 0.05). Higher BMI, Heavy staple food intake, propensity for fat- rich diet, smoking and alcohol use are improtant risk factors of hypertriglyceridemia, while exercise is benefit for lowing the concentration of serum triglycerides. Conclusion Elevated triglycerides level which is influenced by lifestyle to some extent is associated with many diseases, so adjustment of lifestyle is improtant for primary and secondary prevention of these diseases.展开更多
