Pulse rate estimation based on facial videos:an evaluation and optimization of the classical methods using both self-constructed and public datasets

Pulse rate is one of the important characteristics of traditional Chinese medicine pulse diagnosis,and it is of great significance for determining the nature of cold and heat in diseases.The prediction of pulse rate based on facial video is an exciting research field for getting palpation information by observation diagnosis.However,most studies focus on optimizing the algorithm based on a small sample of participants without systematically investigating multiple influencing factors.A total of 209 participants and 2,435 facial videos,based on our self-constructed Multi-Scene Sign Dataset and the public datasets,were used to perform a multi-level and multi-factor comprehensive comparison.The effects of different datasets,blood volume pulse signal extraction algorithms,region of interests,time windows,color spaces,pulse rate calculation methods,and video recording scenes were analyzed.Furthermore,we proposed a blood volume pulse signal quality optimization strategy based on the inverse Fourier transform and an improvement strategy for pulse rate estimation based on signal-to-noise ratio threshold sliding.We found that the effects of video estimation of pulse rate in the Multi-Scene Sign Dataset and Pulse Rate Detection Dataset were better than in other datasets.Compared with Fast independent component analysis and Single Channel algorithms,chrominance-based method and plane-orthogonal-to-skin algorithms have a more vital anti-interference ability and higher robustness.The performances of the five-organs fusion area and the full-face area were better than that of single sub-regions,and the fewer motion artifacts and better lighting can improve the precision of pulse rate estimation. 展开更多

Objective To determine the validity of the diagnostic evidence for deceased cases in hospitals. Methods All information collected from medical records of the deceased cases in tertiary care health facilities was input into our database. Four diagnosis levels were determined based on level of diagnostic evidence: level I was based on autopsy, pathology or operative exploration, level II on physical and laboratory tests plus expert clinical judgment, level III on expert clinical judgment, level IV on postmortem assumptions. After the diagnostic evidence of each deceased case was reviewed by a panel of three experts, the diagnostic level of each diagnosis was determined. Results Among the 2102 medical cases for verbal autopsy study, only 26 (1.24%) afforded diagnostic evidence for level III. Among the level III evidence-based cases of death, the major causes of death were cardiovascular diseases, respiratory diseases, and gastroenterological diseases. According to some special symptoms and medical histories, these cases could be diagnosed by comprehensive clinical judgment. Only one case met the criteria for level IV. Conclusion Level I diagnostic evidence is hard to attain in China because of the traditional concept and economic restriction. The causes for 2101 deaths can be validated by level II or III diagnostic evidence. 展开更多

BACKGROUND Cases of turbinate mucocele or pyogenic mucocele are extremely rare.During nasal endoscopy,turbinate hypertrophy can be detected in patients with turbinate or pyogenic mucocele.However,in many instances,differentiating between turbinate hypertrophy and turbinate mucocele is difficult.Radiological examinations,such as computed tomography(CT)or magnetic resonance imaging(MRI),are essential for the accurate diagnosis of turbinate mucocele.Herein,we report three cases of mucocele or pyogenic mucocele of turbinate,including their clinical presentation,imaging findings,and treatments,to help rhinologists understand this condition better.CASE SUMMARY Three cases of turbinate and pyogenic mucocele were encountered in our hospital.In all patients,nasal obstruction and headache were the most common symptoms,and physical examination revealed hypertrophic turbinates.On CT scan,mucocele appeared as non-enhancing,homogeneous,hypodense,well-defined,rounded,and expansile lesions.Meanwhile,MRI clearly illustrated the cystic nature of the lesion on T2 sequences.Two patients with inferior turbinate mucocele underwent mucocele lining removal,while the patient with pyogenic mucocele underwent endoscopic middle turbinate marsupialization.The patients were followed up on the first,third,sixth month,and 1 year after discharge,and no complaints of headache and nasal congestion were reported during this period.CONCLUSION In conclusion,both CT and MRI are helpful in the diagnosis of turbinate or pyogenic mucocele.Additionally,endoscopic nasal surgery is considered to be the most effective treatment method. 展开更多

Background:Hypertension affects over 1 billion people globally and is the top risk factor of cardiovascular morbidity and mortality.Wuweijiangyasan(WWJYS),as an empirical prescription,has stable depressurization effects.This study investigated the chemical composition and pharmacodynamic effects of WWJYS in regulating the blood pressure(BP),emotion,and blood lipid of spontaneous hypertensive rats,and further explored the depressurization mechanism of WWJYS.Materials and Methods:This study used network pharmacology to identify the origins and predict targets of WWJYS,and artificial intelligence-based molecular docking is used to further predict targets and mechanisms.The chemical constituents of WWJYS were analyzed and identified by ultra high-performance liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry(MS)/MS.Results:In the WWJYS group,the systolic BP level significantly was decreased,and the HR was stable.The irritability became stable after the 5-week treatment compared with the model group(P<0.05).Rats’rotation tolerance time increased after 2-weeks stabilization.Compared with the model group,angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 protein and mRNA of the WWJYS group increased significantly(P<0.05).Network pharmacology collected 64 compounds and identified 22 potential targets of WWJYS for antihypertensive activity.Gene Ontology and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes enrichment analysis showed that WWJYS might regulate smooth muscle cells,affect inflammatory response and improve endothelial function through multiple pathways.The molecular docking study further supported that the target proteins have good combinations with the main active components of WWJYS.Conclusions:The data indicated that WWJYS had significant depressurization,analgesic,and sedative,as well as lipid-lowering effects,and the depressurization mechanism of WWJYS may function in multiple signal pathways,especially in improving blood vessel function and intervening inflammation. 展开更多

Objective To evaluate the effect of the accessory gential gland on the male fertility.Methods The relevant seminal parameters of 32 normal donors and 35 patients with olioasthenospermia were measured by seminal routine analysis,sperm morphology and accessory gentital glands markers.Results The percentage of normal spermatozoa,the function of sperm penetration through cervical mucus and the enzyme activity of neutral α-1,4-glucosidase significantly declined as compared with the control.There was a significant negative relationship between the semen volume and the sperm motility for the oligoasthenospermia(r=-0.415,P<0.05),and a significant positive relationship between the sperm count and the percentage of normal sperm(r=0.393,P<0.05).Conclusion The abnormal function of epididymis exists in patients with oligoasthenospermia.Sperm function for the oligoasthenospermia declines with an increase of the percentage of the abnormal sperm.The poorer the spermatogenises function of the testis is,the higher the percentage of the abnormal sperm appears. 展开更多

Objective:This study explored the multicomponent,multitarget,and multipathway mechanism of Danhe granules(DG)against hyperlipidemia through network pharmacology.The relevant targets and pathways were verified by preliminary experiments.Methods:The active components of DG were selected by TCMSP and TCMIP database,and the component-target network diagram was constructed by Cytoscape 3.7.1.The protein–protein interaction network of targets was constructed and core targets were screened out by STRING11.0 database.Metascape database and Cytoscape 3.7.1 were used to enrich the target and establish a hyperlipidemia model in Sprague-Dawley(SD)rats to detect blood lipid and oxidative stress indexes and observed pathological changes of aorta by H and E staining.Results:The results showed that a total of seven active components of DG were screened out,including quercetin,sitosterol,luteolin,kaempferol,etc.There were 127 corresponding targets,including AKT1,tumor necrosis factor,TP53,interleukin-6,RELA,vascular endothelial growth factor,superoxide dismutases,and catalase.It is mainly involved in biological processes such as drug response,regulation of apoptosis,redox reaction,and lipid reaction.There were 573 signal pathways corresponding to the target,including HIF-1 signal pathway,TNF signal pathway,VEGF signal pathway,nonalcoholic fatty liver disease,etc.The experiment verified that DG can reduce the blood lipid of SD rats by regulating the process of oxidative stress.Conclusions:This study made a preliminary study on the pharmacological mechanism of DG against hyperlipidemia and laid the foundation for the research and development of new drugs and subsequent in-depth research. 展开更多
