Straighthead disease is a physiological disorder in rice and the most widespread non-fungal disease of the U.S. straighthead greatly reduces rice yield. Straighthead studies were most conducted in the artificial field which was Arsenic amendment plots due to the similarity of straighthead symptoms of Arsenic damage. To evaluate the straighthead disease resistance in natural condition, 46 rice lines, including 24 inbred lines and 22 hybrid combinations which were developed from breading program, were chosen for straighthead and agronomy characters testing in a native soil where straighthead naturally induced in the past years at University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff (UAPB), Arkansas in 2011 and 2012. The straighthead of rice were rated from 0 to 9 levels, and 0 was the least straighthead disorder and 9 was the most severe straighthead disorder. Cocodrie (CCDR) was used as the check in this study. The results of 2011 showed that the yields of 8 entries were higher than the check CCDR. The straighthead scores of these 8 entries were 0 - 1 which indicated their resistance to straighthead. The rest of the entries had lower yields than check CCDR with straighthead scores 5 - 6 which indicated their moderate susceptibility to straighthead. The yields were negatively related to the straighthead scores (r = -0.9178, P < 0.01). The results of 2012 showed that the yields of 9 hybrids and 6 inbred entries were higher than the check CCDR. The straighthead scores of top 12 entries were 0 - 2 which indicated that they were resistant to straighthead and 3 entries with straighthead score of 3 which indicated they were moderately resistant to straighthead. The rest 3 hybrids and 4 inbred entries had lower yields than the check and their straighthead scores were 5 - 6 which indicated their moderately susceptible to straighthead. The yields was negatively related to the straighthead scores (r = -0.956, P < 0.01). Compared to CCDR, the yield of hybrids showed their straighthead resistance at some extent. The yields of top six entries, hybrid 33A/PB23, inbred 3053, hybrid 28s/PB22, 28s/PB24, 29s/PB24 and inbred 3222, were 10,376.4, 9991.4, 9566.7, 9334.3, 9183.9 and 9174.3 Kg/Ha, and 46.0%, 40.7%, 34.7%, 31.4%, 29.3%, and 29.5% higher than the check, respectively. 展开更多

Yield test of 41 entries, 32 new hybrids, 8 male parents restore lines and 1 inbred variety, was conducted on the farm of University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff (UAPB) in 2012. The only inbred Francis in this experiment was used as the check. Francis is a popular variety and widely used in Arkansas rice production. Results showed that the yields of 7 hybrids were 25.7% - 30.7% higher than check Francis. Hybrid 28s/BP23R had the highest yield, 10846.6 kg/hectare and over check by 30.7%. The yield of hybrid 28s/PB-24, was 10628.9 kg/hectare and over check by 28.1%. The yields of hybrid 28s/PB-22 and 33A/PB24 were 10549.8 and 10539.8 kg/hectare and over check by 27.1% and 27.0%, respectively. The sterile lines 28s, 29s, 30s and 33A have good combinability. PB2, PB5, PB12, PB22, PB23, PB24, and PB25 are good restorers and most of their hybrids were over check more than 17%. Sterile 28s has DEMG (Dominant Early Maturity Gene) which can make earlier heading hybrids by crossing with late restorer lines. Sterile 30s and 33A have no DEMG but have heat resistant gene. They can make late heading hybrids by crossing with late restorer lines PB24 and PB22 and the late heading hybrids can resistant to hot temperature. These results showed that these sterile lines, restorer lines and hybrids can be used in rice production of Arkansas in the future. 展开更多

A new sterile line UP-3s, which carries the Dominant Early Maturity Gene (DEMG), was bred on the farm of University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff (UAPB). UP-3s and two check sterile lines, Jin23-A and Xie-A which do not carry the Dominant Early Maturity Gene, were crossed with a group of different maturity restorer lines, PB-1R, PB-5R,PB11, PB-13R, PB-20, PB-21, PB-22R, and PB-23R. Eighteen new hybrid rice combinations of these crosses were then tested at UAPB in 2012 and 2013. The results showed that panicle differentiation (PD) of hybrids from female parent UP-3s (DEMG) crossed with the 8 male parents, were earlier than the hybrids from female parent Jin23-A or Xie-A crossed with the 8 male parents. The PD of these earlier hybrids was before Jun 25 and heading was before July 20. Early PD and heading avoided the high temperature (over 34&degC) period which usually occurs after July 20 in Arkansas. The yields of these earlier maturity hybrids with female parent UP-3s were higher than those of the late maturity hybrids thatwereF1 progeny of sterile lines Jin23-A or Xie-A (these two female parent checks with non-DEMG). These results showed that the DEMG sterile line UP-3s can be adopted in making crosses with later maturity restorer lines to obtain earlier maturity hybrids to avoid the high temperature period in Arkansas. 展开更多

The experiment site at UAPB agronomy farm was left undisturbed for several years for organic rice experiment. Soil samples taken in September 2015 showed that the experiment site was deficient with plant nutrients (NPK). Therefore, an organic fertilizer, Nature (8-5-5) was applied before planting mixture of crimson clover and winter wheat as cover crop in fall 2015. Biomass samples taken from the cover cropped land (CCL) and fallow land (FL) resulted in decrease in weed biomass by 33.36% and increase in total biomass by 46.78% in CCL than FL. Cover crops were incorporated one month before the rice sowing in June 2016. Fifteen rice cultivars were experimented for weed competition under water seeding cultivation method. Water seeding method was not effective to control the weeds as weeds dominated most of the rice plots since seedling stage. However, two rice cultivars namely Jasmine 85 and Rondo showed strong weed competition due to higher plant stand and better seedling establishment. 展开更多

Yields and agronomic characters of 35 new hybrids were tested at Pine Bluff, Arkansas in 2013. These hybrids were developed from 7 female parent sterile lines, UP-1s, UP-3s, 100s, 101s, 105s, 111s, and 113A, and 5 male parent restorer lines, PB2, PB5, PB12, PB13, and PB18. The inbred variety Francis, which is a popular variety in the rice production, was used as the check (CK). Results showed that the yields of 10 hybrids were 20.3% - 31.7% higher than that of CKFrancis. The yields of other 18 hybrids were 10.1% - 19.4% higher than CK, and the yields of rest of the hybrids were 2.5% - 9.2% higher than CK. Hybrid UP-3s/PB5 had the highest yield, 12,983.8 kg/hectare and over check by 31.7%. The yield of hybrid UP-3s/PB18 and 115A/PB18 were 12,333.7 kg/hectare and over check 25%. The yields of hybrid UP-1s/PB12 was 12,324.6 kg//hectare and over check 24.9%. The sterile lines UP-3s, 113A, 105s, and 101s have good combinability and the average grain yields of their hybrids were over CKby 21.5%, 20.34%, 17.2% and 16.2%, respectively. The restorer lines PB18, PB5, and PB12 have good combinability and the average grain yields of their hybrids were over CKby 19.9%, 18.4% and 16.2%, respectively. These results indicated that these top hybrids and their parents of the sterile lines and restorer lines might be used in the hybrid rice breeding and production in the future. 展开更多
