Gastrointestinal stromal tumors(GISTs)are rare neoplasms with an estimated incidence from 0.78 to 1-1.5 patients per 100000.They most commonly occur in the elderly during the eighth decade of life affecting predominantly the stomach, but also the small intestine, the omentum, mesentery and rectosigmoid. The available treatments for GIST are associated with a significant rate of recurrent disease and adverse events.Thorough understanding of GIST’s pathophysiology and translation of this knowledge into novel regimens or drug repurposing is essential to counter this challenge. The present review summarizes the existing evidence about the role of angiogenesis in GIST’s development and progression and discusses its clinical underpinnings. 展开更多

BACKGROUND The coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19)pandemic has posed obstacles to the delivery of diabetic foot care.In response to this remote healthcare services have been deployed offering monitoring,follow-up,and referral services to patients with diabetic foot ulcers and related conditions.Although, remote diabetic foot care has been studied before the COVID-19 pandemic as an alternative to inperson care, the peculiar situation of the pandemic, which dictates that remote care would be the sole available option for healthcare practitioners and patients, necessitates an evaluation of the relevant knowledge obtained since the beginning of the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 outbreak.AIM To perform a thorough search in PubMed/Medline and Cochrane to identify original records on the topic.METHODS To identify relevant peer-reviewed publications and gray literature, the authors searched PubMed-MEDLINE and Cochrane Library-Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials starting September 27 till October 31,2021.The reference lists of the selected sources and relevant systematic reviews were also hand–searched to identify potentially relevant resources.Otherwise, the authors searched Reference Citation Analysis(https://www.referencecitationanalysis.com/).RESULTS A number of randomized prospective studies, case series, and case reports have shown that the effectiveness of remote care is comparable to in-person care in terms of hospitalizations, amputations, and mortality. The level of satisfaction of patients’receiving this type of care was high. The cost of remote healthcare was not significantly lower than in-person care though.CONCLUSION It is noteworthy that remote care during the COVID-19 pandemic appeared to be more effective and well-received than remote care in the past.Nevertheless, larger studies spanning over longer time intervals are necessary in order to validate these results and provide additional insights. 展开更多

Chronic liver disease can affect many body systems including the musculoskeletal system. The pathogenetic crosstalk between the liver and organs such as the brain and the kidneys has already been described with compound terms merging the organs affected by the pathology, such as the hepatorenal syndrome.Nevertheless, the musculoskeletal manifestations of chronic liver disease have not been coined with such a term to date.Because of this shortage, documenting the musculoskeletal implications of chronic liver disease in both research and clinical practice is challenging. To fill this gap,the authors propose the term hepatomusculoskeletal disorders,a compound term of Greek origin that encompasses all the body structures involved in the aforementioned pathologic crosstalk. 展开更多

The Republic of Plato is a philosophical treatise describing the ideal city-state,a self-sufficient civil entity in the world of Ideas(Forms)that enables both individuals and the society to thrive.Elements of the Republic can be tracedwoka in modern policymaking.Plato’s ethical and political philosophy consists of a standpoint of reflection towards contemporary challenges, one of whom is admittedly COVID-19 vaccination.Few countries have made vaccination obligatory for the whole of the population, while many countries consider making vaccination mandatory for particular high-risk groups and front line workers. In response to the growing debate on the necessity and the ethical integrity of mandatory vaccination against COVID-19,this paper discusses the matter in the context of Plato’s Republic and provides relevant recommendations. 展开更多

A study published recently by Graumans and colleagues(2021)reported James Bond's exposure to infectious agents across a number of movies[1].The authors took the initiative to use cinema as a source of hygiene literacy, pointing out common flaws and risks for individual and public health.Revisiting popular sources through the lenses of public health, can become an effective tool of science communication by providing readers with an amusing and simultaneously learning experience. The latter is a dire need, taking into account the mounting health disinformation amidst the COVID-19 pandemic. 展开更多

Health seems to be an issue of prominent importance since classical antiquity to the 21st century AD.Back in the 4th century BC,the renowned philosopher Plato stated that“at-tention to Health is life’s greatest hindrance”[1].Even if this statement sounds ambiguous to people who consider health a blessing, this essay serves two precise points:to examine such a claim in relation to Plato’s philosophical worldview while discussing it in relation to contemporary attitude. 展开更多
