The ischemic cardiovascular disorders (CVD) can be the first health problem of the world. It seems that there is a relationship between pulp stones and cardiovascular diseases to determine the diagnostic value of panoramic dental radiographs as non-invasive test for the early detection of CVD. Methods and Materials: The subjects of the study came from patients presenting to Dental Radiology Department of Dental School in Yazd who aged 30 - 64 years, had 8 natural teeth. They were referred to the Cardiovascular Center of Afshar Hospital in Yazd for cardiovascular evaluation. To set the cut-off point, the ratio of teeth with pulp stones to the total number of teeth for each person was calculated and also ABI for diagnosing IHD via ROC curve was used. Results: Only 3.8% of patients without pulp stone were affected by ischemic heart disease (IHD). About Sixty seven percent (67.3%) of individuals had at least one tooth with pulp stone. In individuals without IHD, 5% of the teeth showed pulp stone while this rate was 45% (9 times) in CVD patients. The number of patients for whom the ratio of teeth with pulp stone to total number of teeth was 0.2 or more, was 138.7 times greater than the other. Conclusion: The dentists, who order panoramic radiographs for the treatment of patients, exactly study those teeth for the presence of pulp stones. The ratio of teeth with pulp stone to total teeth equal 0.2 or more was a good tool for early detection of CVD. 展开更多

Background: Nowadays, though more attention is being paid to oral and dental hygiene all over the world, dental caries and periodontal diseases are increasing daily. We decided to study the effectiveness of natural toothbrush in prevention of dental caries and plaque formation. Methods: This analytic, semi-experimental clinical trial included 390 individuals. Subjects were divided into 3 groups: using natural toothbrush, using artificial toothbrush and using both natural and artificial toothbrush. The plaque index and DMFT was assessed at the beginning of the study until 1 year. ANOVA, Kruskal Wallis, LSD, Paired t-test, chi square, Fisher exact and Mc-Nemar tests were used for data analysis. Results: The plaque index in all three groups showed a mean reduction of 0.71. The mean DMFT in the samples before intervention was 8.38 ± 4.14 and increased to 9.1 ± 4.56. At the end of the study, the lowest plaque index was observed in the group using both the natural and artificial methods. During one year follow-up, the plaque index decreased 1.16, 0.83, and 0.21 degrees in the first, second and third groups. Conclusion: The increase in DMFT in the group that used artificial toothbrush was more than other groups. Thus, use of natural toothbrush leads to a decrease in growth rate of DMFT. Therefore natural toothbrush can be used for the cleaning of teeth and prevention of dental caries. 展开更多

Background and objective: Proper patient treatment planning depends on correct diagnosis of its disease which could be achieved by taking high quality radiographs. Densitometric stability and film processing have important effect on the radiographs quality. The aim of the present study was to compare the densitometric stability of intra oral E+ and Insight film, which were processed by Champion and Teifsaz solutions. Materials and methods: A lab trial study was conducted. Radiographic images were taken of 56 E and Insight through lead step-wedge. Films were processed by new and in aging Champion and Teifsaz solutions every four days. After 56 days, the radiographic density of each film was calculated by Photoshop software. The contrast of each image was calculated by distracting maximum and minimum density. The resultant data were coded in SPSS software and analyzed by two-way variance analysis. Results: There is significant difference between the mean of density of processed films with the two different chemicals (Champion & Teifsaz) (P-value + and Insight films (P- value = 0.717). Conclusion: Densitometric stability of new Insight film is as the same as currently used E+ film and is better preserved with Champion chemicals than Teifsaz solutions. 展开更多

The aim of the study was to determine the rela-tionship between Body Mass Index (BMI) and accelerated dental development. The dental developmental ages of 100 children aged between 8 and 12 years were determined using the Demirjian method and panoramic radiographs. BMI status was determined for each subject on the basis of the system developed by the International Obesity Task Force. There was a significant direct relationship between dental development and BMI (P < 0.01). Obese children have a higher rate of dental development compared to normal children. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: This is an important variable to be considered when planning for dental and orthodontic treatments in obese children. Brief objectives statement: Overweight or obesity can accelerate dental development. Accelerated dental development in overweight children is important to be considered in pediatric dentistry and orthodontics. 展开更多

Objectives: Bone defects following tumor resection and osteolysis due to dental and bone lesions and periodentium tissue disorders are serious challenges. One of these materials used is chitosan, a derivative of crustaceans’ exoskeleton. The aim of this study was to assess effects of chitosan on socket repair after dental extraction. Methods: Twenty four dental sockets of 15-24 years old patients were visited by a maxillofacial surgeon for extracting premolar teeth for orthodontic purposes. The sockets in one side were filled-in by chitosan. In the other side, the sockets were left unfilled. After 10 weeks, periapical radiographs were obtained from the repair sites, were digitalized and then evaluated for densitometry using Adobe Photoshop Software. Each socket was divided into coronal, middle and apical. Dental density of each socket in case and control groups was recorded. The density of regenerated bone was compared against the maximum bone density of each individual. Wilcoxon signed range test and paired t-test were used for data analysis. Results: Bone density in middle and apical sections in case group was significantly more than control group. In apical section in case group regenerated bone reached up to 98.2% of normal bone density. In each patient, the bone density in epical and middle sections was increase 29.3% and 10.8% of normal bone density. Conclusions: Chitosan significantly increased bone density in epical and middle sections. Chitosan can be used for bone repair in cases of bone loss. Various densitometry studies for evaluating chitosan effects in different bone defects are suggested. 展开更多

External root resorption can induce the degeneration of dental cementum and dentine and may extend towards the pulp reductive. Digital subtraction radiography can function as a useful tool in diagnosing degenerative carious lesions. This study investigated the diagnostic value of digital subtraction radiography in detecting external root resorption. This was a descriptive study conducted using the lab trial method. Artificially-induced external root resorption was created in different sizes at the coronal and apical aspects of 20 premolar teeth. Digital radiographs were obtained of each tooth under standard conditions and these radiographs were subtracted by imaging devices. The subtracted images and the digital radiographs were observed by three radiologists. Chi-square, Kappa test, and Z-test were used to analyze the data. The mean of general sensitivity of digital subtraction radiography and direct digital radiography was low in diagnosing 0.05 mm lesions (Sen = 35%), yet, the accuracy index was good for all lesions (Acc ≥ 65%). Other diagnostic parameters were also acceptable. Both types of radiography worked better in diagnosing coronal than apical lesions (P > 0.05). The interpreters (observers) showed a better performance in diagnosing external root resorption using digital subtraction radiography compared to digital radiography. Both modalities were exact and accurate in detecting 0.05 mm lesions as well as other lesions. However, the results of digital subtraction radiography were not significantly different from those of direct digital radiography. 展开更多

The rate of dental caries and periodontal diseases in the world is still high, regardless of progress in the oral and dental hygiene. The natural toothbrush or chewing stick called “Mis- wak” has been used since ancient history. In this research the efficacy of Miswak in preventing dental caries was investigated and compared with the efficacy of toothbrush and tooth- paste. The analytical and clinical trial method was applied for this research among high sch- ool’s students in the city of Yazd, Iran, 2006. Three hundred eighty second year’s students (190 cases and 190 controls) were examined dentally. Then the Miswak was distributed to the case group and required trainings were given to both groups. After one year, the examinations were repeated. For analyzing the data one-way variance analysis test, Kai square, Paired t-test and two variable analyses were used. In the beginning of this study, there were no significant differences between two groups (cases and controls) regarding their dental situation and the frequency of brushing their teeth (p-value = 0.162). In addition, there were no significant differences in DMFT between the two groups. The data collected at the end of the study showed a significant increase in DMFT in the control group (p-value = 0.000). There was 55% increase in the rate of dental caries in control group compared to case group (0.89 before the study and 1.38 after the study). The risk of dental caries for each tooth in control group was 9.35 times more than case group (9.14% and 0.98% respectively). Dental caries rate was detected slightly less in the case group at the end of this study. This might be as a result of the antimicrobial effects of Miswak. A longer study with more cases is needed to prove this suggestion. 展开更多
