Application of Feature, Event, and Process Methods to Leakage Scenario Development for Offshore CO_(2) Geological Storage

Offshore carbon dioxide(CO_(2)) geological storage(OCGS) represents a significant strategy for addressing climate change by curtailing greenhouse gas emissions. Nonetheless, the risk of CO_(2) leakage poses a substantial concern associated with this technology. This study introduces an innovative approach for establishing OCGS leakage scenarios, involving four pivotal stages, namely, interactive matrix establishment, risk matrix evaluation, cause–effect analysis, and scenario development, which has been implemented in the Pearl River Estuary Basin in China. The initial phase encompassed the establishment of an interaction matrix for OCGS systems based on features, events, and processes. Subsequent risk matrix evaluation and cause–effect analysis identified key system components, specifically CO_(2) injection and faults/features. Building upon this analysis, two leakage risk scenarios were successfully developed, accompanied by the corresponding mitigation measures. In addition, this study introduces the application of scenario development to risk assessment, including scenario numerical simulation and quantitative assessment. Overall, this research positively contributes to the sustainable development and safe operation of OCGS projects and holds potential for further refinement and broader application to diverse geographical environments and project requirements. This comprehensive study provides valuable insights into the establishment of OCGS leakage scenarios and demonstrates their practical application to risk assessment, laying the foundation for promoting the sustainable development and safe operation of ocean CO_(2) geological storage projects while proposing possibilities for future improvements and broader applications to different contexts. 展开更多

CO_(2) geological utilization and storage(CGUS)is an important technology to achieve a deep cut of global CO_(2) emissions.CO_(2) leakage from the subsurface may impair the performance of CGUS projects,and the CO_(2) leakage through wellbores is the most common leakage pathway.This paper proposes a workflow for wellbore CO_(2) leakage risk management,and the workflow consists of the following steps:i)leakage risk identification;ii)leakage risk evaluation;iii)leakage risk monitoring;iv)leakage handling.Representative approaches in each step of the workflow are systematically reviewed.Key challenges of wellbore CO_(2) leakage risk management include:lack of effective detection and evaluation approaches to tackle the CO_(2) leakage risk induced by cement failure;lack of low-cost acid resistance alloys and CO_(2)-resistant cement;lack of automated monitoring systems that could enable automated shutdowns of the wellbore whenever certain warning criteria are met. 展开更多

The dephasing of molecular alignment can lead to the deformation of the alignment signal during its periodic revivals.Most studies are concentrated on the first few rotational revival periods of the molecular alignment and neglect the dephasing effect.However,study of the alignment dephasing is still of great significance for both the long-term dynamics of the molecular alignment and the dephasing itself.In this work,we theoretically demonstrate that the dephasing effect is correlated with both the rotational temperature and the rotational revival period of the molecules.The results present that the dephasing is especially significant for those molecules with long rotational revival period at high rotational temperatures.The physics behind it is explored by taking advantage of the coherence of the rotational quantum state population.This work deepens our understanding of rotational dynamics and rotational spectroscopy in molecular alignment. 展开更多
