The proliferation of glomerular mesangial cells (GMC) and secretion of the extracellular matrix (ECM) in rat with Thy-1 nephritis (Thy-1N) resembling human mesangioproliferative glomerulonephritis have been explored for many years; however, the molecular mechanisms of GMC proliferation and ECM production remain unclear. Our previous studies have demonstrated that the thrombospondin-1 (TSP-1) gene was involved in mediating rat GMC proliferation and ECM synthesis induced by sublytic C5b-9 in vitro. In the present study, the roles of the TSP-1 gene in GMC proliferation, ECM production, and urinary protein secretion in Thy-1N rats were determined by using TSP-1 small hairpin RNA, and the results revealed that silencing of the TSP-1 gene in rat renal tissues could diminish GMC proliferation (P < 0.01) and ECM secretion (P < 0.01) as well as urinary protein secretion (P < 0.05) in Thy-1N rats. Together, the current findings suggested that TSP-1 gene expression was required for GMC proliferation and ECM production in Thy-1N rats. 展开更多

Complex perturbations in the profile and the sparsity of samples often limit the validity of rapid environmental assessment(REA)in the South China Sea(SCS).In this paper, the remote sensing data were used to estimate sound speed profile(SSP)with the self-organizing map(SOM)method in the SCS.First, the consistency of the empirical orthogonal functions was examined by using k-means clustering. The clustering results indicated that SSPs in the SCS have a similar perturbation nature, which means the inverted grid could be expanded to the entire SCS to deal with the problem of sparsity of the samples without statistical improbability.Second,a machine learning method was proposed that took advantage of the topological structure of SOM to significantly improve their accuracy.Validation revealed promising results, with a mean reconstruction error of 1.26 m/s,which is 1.16 m/s smaller than the traditional single empirical orthogonal function regression(sEOF-r)method.By violating the constraints of linear inversion, the topological structure of the SOM method showed a smaller error and better robustness in the SSP estimation. The improvements to enhance the accuracy and robustness of REA in the SCS were offered. These results suggested a potential utilization of REA in the SCS based on satellite data and provided a new approach for SSP estimation derived from sea surface data. 展开更多

The Northern Orogenic Belt(NOB,also known as the Central Asian Orogenic Belt,CAOB)is the world's largest Phanerozoic accretionary orogenic belt and records geological processes involved in the development and evolution of the Paleo-Asian Ocean from the Neoproterozoic through the early Paleozoic to the Late Paleozoic. The NOB thus provides an ideal natural laboratory for geologists to study Phanerozoic continental dynamics and mineralization. 展开更多

Accretionary complex was usually formed by offscraping of the subducting crustal material over the trench and thus often referred to as subduction zone mélange. The structure, composition and forming process of accretionary wedges can provide important insights into the evolution history of ocean basin,ocean-continent material cycle, continental accretion and thus contribute to understanding of the origin of plates and the growth of continents.Accretionary complex is characterized by a block-in-matrix structure associated with imbricate thrusts and isoclinal folds, diversified metamorphic types and intense water-rock interactions, which are distinct to the traditional stratigraphy.Since the proposal of the concept of accretionary wedge over a hundred years ago, great progress has been made in a variety of research focuses, such as the identification of the distribution of accretionary complexes, their compositions and formation mechanisms, the affinities of the matrix and igneous rocks, the recognition of the Ocean Plate Stratigraphy(OPS),the reconstruction of oceanic basin, the dynamic background of the tectonic evolution, the relationship between subduction zone and orogenic belt and,in particular, the accretionary complexes in continental subduction zones. These studies have significantly improved our understanding of the plate tectonic theory.Challenges remain in the identification of ancient accretionary complexes, the detailed analysis of accretionary complex zones, the accretion characteristics during continental collision, and the geochemical tracing of water-rock interaction during the accretion.China contains representative orogenic belts and accretionary complex zones in the world, and its geological records provide the best opportunity to make new breakthroughs in understanding of the plate tectonics. 展开更多
