BACKGROUND Aplasia cutis congenita (ACC) in newborns is a condition in which congenital defects or hypoplasia is present in part of the epidermis,dermis and even subcutaneous tissue (including muscle and bones).First ...BACKGROUND Aplasia cutis congenita (ACC) in newborns is a condition in which congenital defects or hypoplasia is present in part of the epidermis,dermis and even subcutaneous tissue (including muscle and bones).First reported by Cordon in 1767,ACC is a rare disease with a low incidence of 1/100000 to 3/10000.Currently,there are 500 cases reported worldwide.ACC can be accompanied by other malformations.The onset mechanism of the disease remains unknown but is thought to be correlated to factors such as genetics,narrow uterus,foetal skin and amniotic membrane adhesion,use of teratogenic drugs in early pregnancy and viral infection.CASE SUMMARY In August 2018,we treated a newborn with ACC on the left lower limbs using a combination of ionic silver dressing and moist exposed burn ointment (MEBO) and achieved a satisfactory treatment outcome.The skin defects were observed on the external genitals and on areas from the left foot to 3/4 of the upper left side.Subcutaneous tissue and blood vessels were observed in the regions with skin defects.The following treatments were provided.First,the wound was rinsed with 0.9% sodium chloride solution followed by disinfection with povidone-iodine twice.And then MEBO was applied to the wound at a thickness of approximately 1 mm.After applying ionic silver dressing,the wound was covered with sterile gauze.The wound dressing was replaced every 2-3 d.At the 4-mo follow-up,the treatment outcome was satisfactory.There was minimal scar tissue formation,and limb function was not impaired.CONCLUSION The combination of ionic silver dressing and MEBO to ACC is helpful.展开更多

It was fabricated at the Nanjing Institute of Astronomical Optics & T...A new multi-wavelength solar telescope, the Optical and Near-infrared Solar Eruption Tracer (ONSET) of Nanjing University, has been constructed. It was fabricated at the Nanjing Institute of Astronomical Optics & Technology, and the oper- ation is jointly administered with Yunnan Astronomical Observatory. ONSET is able to observe the Sun in three wavelength windows: He I 10830 A, Ha and white-light at 3600 A and 4250 A, which are selected in order to simultaneously record the dynam- ics of the corona, chromosphere and photosphere respectively. Full-disk or partial-disk solar images with a field of 10~ at three wavelengths can be obtained nearly simultane- ously. It is designed to trace solar eruptions with high spatial and temporal resolutions. This telescope was installed at a new solar observing site near Fuxian Lake in Yunnan Province, southwest China. The site is located at E102N24, with an altitude of 1722 m. The seeing is stable and has high quality. We give a brief description of the scientific objectives and the basic structure of ONSET. Muscle contraction results from cyclic interactions between actin filament and myos...The spontaneous oscillatory contraction(SPOC) of myofibrils is the essential property inherent to the contractile system of muscle. Muscle contraction results from cyclic interactions between actin filament and myosin II which is a dimeric motor protein with two heads. Taking the two heads of myosin II as an indivisible element and considering the effects of cooperative behavior between the two heads on rate constants in the mechanochemical cycle, the present work proposes the tenstate mechanochemical cycle model for myosin II dimer. The simulations of this model show that the proportion of myosin II in different states periodically changes with time, which results in the sustained oscillations of contractive tension, and serves as the primary factor for SPOC. The good fit of this model to experimental results suggests that the cooperative interaction between the two heads of myosin II dimer may be one of the underlying mechanisms for muscle contraction.展开更多

OBJECTIVE The eradication of cancer stem cells(CSCs) is signifcant for cancer therapy and prevention.METHODS In this study,we evaluated WM130,a novel derivative of matrine,for its effect on CSCs using human hepatocell...OBJECTIVE The eradication of cancer stem cells(CSCs) is signifcant for cancer therapy and prevention.METHODS In this study,we evaluated WM130,a novel derivative of matrine,for its effect on CSCs using human hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC) cell lines,their sphere cells,and sorted EpCAM+cells.RESULTS We revealed that WM130 could not only inhibit proliferation and colony formation of HCC cells,but also suppress the expression of some stemness-related genes and up-regulate some mature hepatocyte marker genes,indicating a promotion of differentiation from CSCs to hepatocytes.WM130 also suppressed the proliferation of doxorubicin-resistant hepatoma cells,and markedly reduced the cells with CSC biomarker EpCAM.Moreover,WM130 suppressed HCC spheres,not only primary spheres but also subsequent spheres,indicating an inhibitory effect on self-renewal capability of CSCs.Interestingly,WM130 exhibiteda remarkable inhibitory preference on HCC spheres and EpCAM+cells rather than their parental HCC cells and EpCAM-cells respectively.In vivo,WM130 inhibited HCC xenograft growth,decreased the number of sphere-forming cells,and remarkably decreased the levels of EpCAM mRNA and protein in tumor xenografts.Better inhibitory effect was achieved by WM130 in combination with doxorubicin.Further mechanism study revealed that WM130 inhibited AKT/GSK3β/β-catenin signaling pathway.CONCLUSION Collectively,our results suggest that WM130 remark.ably inhibits hepatic CSCs,and this effect may via the down-regulation of the AKT/GSK3β/β-catenin pathway.These findings provide a strong rationale for the use of WM130 as a novel drug candidate in HCC therapy.展开更多

ObjectiveTo observe the clinical therapeutic effect on subthreshold depression of liver stagnation and spleen deficiency treated with acupuncture therapy for soothing the liver and regulating the mind combined with th...ObjectiveTo observe the clinical therapeutic effect on subthreshold depression of liver stagnation and spleen deficiency treated with acupuncture therapy for soothing the liver and regulating the mind combined with the well-timed auricular acupressure.MethodsA total of 34 patients were treated with acupuncture therapy for soothing the liver and regulating the mind combined with well-timed auricular acupressure.In acupuncture therapy for soothing the liver and regulating the mind,main acupoints included Baihui(BL20),Neiguan(PC6)and Taichong(LR3),and supplementary acupoints included Sishencong(EX-HN1),Shenting(GV24),Benshen(GB13),Zusanli(ST36),Ganshu(BL18)and Pishu(BL20).Acupuncture was given three times a week as one course and 4 courses of treatment were required.In well-timed auricular acupressure,auricular points included Xin(CO15),Pizhixia(AT4),Shenmen(TF4),Gan(CO12)and Pi(CO13).Acupressure with herbal seeds at those auricular points was applied at three time divisions,i.e.9:00 to 11:00,11:00 to 13:00 and 15:00 to 17:00 successively.The auricular acupressure with herbal seeds was given once every 3 days,the treatment for 1 week was 1 course and 4 courses were required.At the end of treatment and in 3 months of follow-up,the score of Hamilton depression scale-24(HAMD-24),syndrome score of traditional Chinese medicine(TCM),the score of Center for epidemiologic studies depression scale(CES-D)and the score of Short-form 36 item health survey(SF-36)were adopted to evaluate clinical therapeutic effect.ResultsAfter treatment and in three months of follow-up,HAMD-24 score,TCM syndrome score and CES-D score were all reduced as compared with the scores before treatment(all P<0.05)and SF-36 score was higher than the score before treatment,respectively(both P<0.05).In comparison of the scores after treatment with those in 3 months of follow-up,differences were not statistically significant(all P>0.05).Of 34 patients with subthreshold depression,8 cases were cured,15 cases effective remarkably,9 cases improved and 2 cases no effect.The total effective rate was 94.12%.ConclusionThe combined treatment of acupuncture therapy for soothing the liver and regulating the mind with the well-timed auricular acupressure can be benefit for relieving the symptoms and improves the quality of life in the patients with subthreshold depression of liver stagnation and spleen deficiency.展开更多
