In this study,an iterative-based three-dimensional finite element lower bound in association with the second-order cone programming method is adopted to evaluate the limit load of a single pile embedded in cross-anisotropic soils under general loading condition. The lower bound solutions of the pile embedded in an anisotropic soil deposit can be found by formulating the element equilibrium, equilibrium of shear and normal stresses along discontinuities, boundary conditions, yield function, and optimizing the objective function through the second-order cone programming method in conjunction with an iterative-based update procedure.A general loading condition is considered to profile the expansion of the safe load in the vertical-horizontal-moment(V-H-M)space.The results of this study are compared and validated against three different cases including an isotropic lateral loading, anisotropic end bearing capacity, and a pile embedded in an isotropic soil deposit under general loading condition.A parametric study is conducted to evaluate the impact of different influencing factors. It was found that the effect of anisotropy on the variation of lateral limit load of a single pile is more pronounced than the corresponding vertical and bending moment limit loads, whereas the interface properties have more significant effects on the vertical and bending moment limit loads in comparison to the lateral limit load. 展开更多

Variation of shear-wave propagation velocity(SWV) with depth was studied by analyzing more than one hundred actual SWV profiles. Linear, power, and hyperbolic variation schemes were investigated to find the most representative form for naturally occurred alluvial deposits. It was found that hyperbolic(asymptotic) variation dominates the majority of cases and it can be reliably implemented in analytical or analytical-numerical procedures. Site response analyses for a one-layer heterogeneous stratum were conducted to find an equivalent homogeneous alternative which simplifies the analysis procedure but does not compromise the accuracy of the resonance and amplification responses. Harmonic average, arithmetic average and mid-value equivalents are chosen from the literature for investigation. Furthermore, full and partial depth averaging schemes were evaluated and compared in order to verify the validity of current practices which rely upon averaging shallow depths, viz., the first 30 m of the strata. Engineering bedrock concept was discussed and the results were compared. 展开更多

The conventional pseudo-dynamic(CPD)and modified pseudo-dynamic(MPD)methods are invoked to obtain the seismic bearing capacity of strip foundations using the limit equilibrium method, with a two-wedge failure mechanism.A spectral version of the conventional pseudo-dynamic method(SPD)is also invoked by considering the ground motion amplification factor,to be a function of the non-dimensional frequencyλ/B and soil damping.Numeric analyses show that bearing capacity results obtained by the MPD and SPD methods are generally consistent. Both experience the same general reduction in bearing capacity with the increase ofλ/B,with successive ups and downs corresponding to soil′s natural frequencies. For 5<λ/B<10,SPD and MPD results fluctuated between falling above and below CPD results.Forλ/B<2.5,SPD and MPD results were consistent with attenuation of the shear wave, while for 10<λ/B,amplification was exhibited. Results obtained by the CPD method monotonically decrease, due to the fact that CPD fails to inherently consider site effects and damping, and instead and relies on a single factor to consider the ground motion amplification. 展开更多
