BACKGROUND Composite tumors are neoplasms comprising two distinct,yet intermingling,cell populations.This paper reports a rare phenomenon where early gastric signet-ring cell carcinoma(SRCC)and gastric mucosa-associat...BACKGROUND Composite tumors are neoplasms comprising two distinct,yet intermingling,cell populations.This paper reports a rare phenomenon where early gastric signet-ring cell carcinoma(SRCC)and gastric mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue(MALT)lymphoma coexist within the same lesion.CASE SUMMARY A 40-year-old woman presented to the West China Hospital for examination,which revealed a whitish,shallow,and uneven mucosal lesion in the stomach.The lesion was diagnosed as a poorly differentiated adenocarcinoma,including SRCC with atypical lymphoid hyperplasia associated with Helicobacter pylori infection,based on histopathological examination of the biopsy specimen.The lesion was excised using segmental gastrectomy.However,histological exami-nation of the surgical specimen confirmed that it was a poorly differentiated gastric adenocarcinoma with features of SRCC and MALT lymphoma.These two entities were stage I and coexisted in the same lesion.CONCLUSION It is uncommon for gastric SRCC and MALT lymphoma to coexist without distinct borders.Surgical resection is effective for these lesions.展开更多
BACKGROUND Osteopetrosis is a rare genetic disorder characterized by increased bone density due to defective bone resorption of osteoclasts.Approximately,80%of autosomal dominant osteopetrosis type II(ADO-II)patients ...BACKGROUND Osteopetrosis is a rare genetic disorder characterized by increased bone density due to defective bone resorption of osteoclasts.Approximately,80%of autosomal dominant osteopetrosis type II(ADO-II)patients were usually affected by heterozygous dominant mutations in the chloride voltage-gated channel 7(ClCN7)gene and present early-onset osteoarthritis or recurrent fractures.In this study,we report a case of persistent joint pain without bone injury or underlying history.CASE SUMMARY We report a 53-year-old female with joint pain who was accidentally diagnosed with ADO-II.The clinical diagnosis was based on increased bone density and typical radiographic features.Two heterozygous mutations in the ClCN7 and Tcell immune regulator 1(TCIRG1)genes by whole exome sequencing were identified in the patient and her daughter.The missense mutation(c.857G>A)occurred in the CLCN7 gene p.R286Q,which is highly conserved across species.The TCIRG1 gene point mutation(c.714-20G>A)in intron 7(near the splicing site of exon 7)had no effect on subsequent transcription.CONCLUSION This ADO-II case had a pathogenic CLCN7 mutation and late onset without the usual clinical symptoms.For the diagnosis and assessment of the prognosis for osteopetrosis,genetic analysis is advised.展开更多

The pathological documents were supplied by the Department of Pathology, West China Hospital, and other necessary data were extracted from the hospital records. The statistical analyses were performed by survival analysis (Kaplan-Meier method), descriptive statistical analyses and Х^2 analysis.RESULTS: The neuroendocrine marker vimentin was found to be selectively expressed in the benign tumors, and there were significant differences in the expression of those markers in both benign and malignant tumors. The survival analysis revealed that survival correlated significantly with the malignancy, metastasis and nodal status.CONCLUSION: Vimentin may be useful in the differential diagnosis between malignant and benign tumors. The difference in the expression of this marker in the tumors could be a clue to the future clinical diagnosis. The malignancy, metastasis and the nodal status may predict the prognosis of this disease.展开更多

We describe a rare case of peliosis hepatis and gummatous syphilis of the liver with emphasis on CT findings. Image characteristics of our patient included pseudotumoral appearance of peliosis hepatis, isodensity to the adjacent liver parenchyma on unenhanced and dual-phase scanning. To our knowledge, peliosis hepatis associated with syphilis and unique enhancement pattern has not been reported. Considering the imaging features of peliosis hepatis, it should be considered in the differential diagnosis of atypical focal hepatic lesion.展开更多

Longitudinal electron bunch length was measured by detecting the interferogram of coherent transition radiation generated by electron bunches using a THz interferometer and a Golay cell(spectral range0.02-20 THz) at Shanghai X-ray free-electron laser. The detailed process of measurement and data analysis are discussed herein. Furthermore, the electron bunch length was estimated based on the dispersive strength R_(56) of the bunch compressor and the energy spread δ of electron bunches, which were obtained via experiments. The comparison showed that the measured bunch length was consistent with the estimated bunch length.展开更多

The 2002/2003 El Ni^no event was chosen for study of the anomalies of circulation outside the Yangtze Estuary. The coastal and ocean current systems of the East China Sea and the current structure outside the Yangtze Estuary were accurately described. The results of vertical circulation analysis basically coincide with those of horizontal circulation analysis, showing that the circulation outside the Yangtze Estuary is mainly affected by the Taiwan warm current, runoff from the Yangtze Estuary, and the tide-induced residual current. The El Ni^no event weakens Yangtze Estuary circulation to a certain degree, and the impacts are more significant in summer than in winter. During the 2002/2003 El Ni^no event, the flux of the Taiwan warm current decreases, and the northward component of the Taiwan warm current decreases by half in February 2003 compared to the previous year. We report experimental observations performed using a net anomalous dispersion Er-doped fiber ring laser without polarization-selective elements,highlighting the domain-wall solitary pulses generated under the incoher...We report experimental observations performed using a net anomalous dispersion Er-doped fiber ring laser without polarization-selective elements,highlighting the domain-wall solitary pulses generated under the incoherent polarization coupling.By adjusting the pump power and the polarization state appropriately,bright and dark solitons can stably co-exist in the cavity,both centered at 1562.16 nm with a 3-dB spectral width of -0.15 nm and a repetition rate of 3.83 MHz.Moreover,the 0.8 mm long thulium-doped fiber(TDF)facilitated the mode-locking and self-starting of the laser.This is the first demonstration of a laser being used to generate bright and dark solitons synchronously while using TDF as the saturable absorber(SA).Except possessing the all-fiber structure,the laser exhibits good stability,which may have a significant influence on improvement of the pulse-laser design,and may broaden practical applications in optical sensing,optical communication,and soliton multiplexed systems.展开更多

The BAM uses a radio frequency signal generated by a pickup cavity to modulate the reference laser pulses in an electro-optical intensity modulator(EOM), and the bunch arrival-time information is derived from the amplitude change of the laser pulse after laser pulse modulation.EOM is a key optical component in the BAM system.Through the basic principle analysis of BAM, many parameters of the EOM are observed to affect the measurement resolution of the BAM system. Therefore, a systematic analysis of the EOM is crucial. In this paper, we present two schemes to compare and analyze an EOM and provide a reference for selecting a new version of the EOM.展开更多

This system was developed to extract ultra-low-jitter microwave signals from optical pulse trains emitted by mode-locked E...A balanced optical microwave phase detector(BOMPD) based on a 3 × 3 coupler is presented. This system was developed to extract ultra-low-jitter microwave signals from optical pulse trains emitted by mode-locked Er-fiber lasers, and synchronized microwave and laser systems. We demonstrate that the BOMPD achieves a precision of synchronization of less than 100 femtosecond of timing jitter. The experimental setup can be applied to the soft X-ray free-electron laser located on the campus of the Shanghai synchrotron radiation facility. A microwave signal with a 2.856 GHz frequency is extracted from a238 MHz mode-locked Er-laser, with an absolute timing jitter of 34 fs in the 10 Hz–10 MHz frequency offset range.In addition, the microwave and 238 MHz optical pulse signals are synchronized with a relative timing jitter of16 fs at the same frequency offset range.展开更多

The ...Iterative multireference configuration interaction (IMRCI) is proposed. It is exploited to compute the electronic energies of H2O and CH2(singlet and triplet states) at equilibrium and non-equilibrium geometries. The potential energy curves of H2O, CH2(singlet and triplet states) and N2 have also been calculated with IMRCI as well as the M?ller Plesset perturbation theory (MP2, MP3, and MP4), the coupled cluster method with single and double substitutions (CCSD), and CCSD with perturbative triples correction (CCSD(T)).These calculations demonstrate that IMRCI results are independent of the initial guess of configuration functions in the reference space and converge quickly to the results of the full configuration interaction. The IMRCI errors relative to the full configuration interaction results are at the order of magnitude of 10-5 hartree within just 2-4 iterations. Further,IMRCI provides an efficient way to find on the potential energy surface the leading electron configurations which, as correct reference states, will be very helpful for the single-reference and multireference theoretical models to obtain accurate results.展开更多

The nanoporous films are character...Multilayer Nb2O5 nanoporous films were successfully synthesized on Nb surfaces by the control anodization process in ethylene glycol containing 4 vol% HF and 2 vol% H2O2 electrolyte. The nanoporous films are characterized in detail by field-emission scanning electron microscopy(FESEM), transmission electron microscopy(TEM), and X-ray diffraction(XRD). The Nb_2O_5 nanoporous films have a multilayer morphology with the side wall thickness of ~5 nm, irregular pores with a diameter of ~25 nm, and a length of up to 7.39 lm, depending on the anodization time. A mechanism for the multilayer Nb2O5 nanoporous formation was also discussed. These nanoporous materials can be very useful in the fields of solar cells, gas sensors, catalysts, optical filters, and capacitors.展开更多
