BACKGROUND: Acute poisoning is frequently encountered at emergency department. This study was to investigate the epidemiology and characteristics of patients with acute poisoning who were treated at the Emergency Center, Fujian Provincial Hospital, China.METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed the gender, age, causes of poisoning, types of poisons, poisoning route, emergency diagnoses, outcomes, and prognoses of these patients.RESULTS: Altogether 2867 patients with acute poisoning were treated from January 2004 to December 2009. The ratio of male to female was 1:1.04, and their average age was 33.8 years. Of the 2867 patients, 76.39% were between 18 and 40 years old. The incidence of acute poisoning was as high as 11.33% in January each year. The incidence of poisoning was in a descending order: alcohol poisoning (54.55%), medication poisoning (25.95%), pesticide poisoning (5.65%), and drug poisoning (4.88%). Most (56.44%) of the patients with drug poisoning were under 25 years and their mean age was significantly lower than that of patients with medication poisoning or alcohol poisoning (P 〈 0.01). Approximately 69.54% of the patients were followed up after emergency treatment, 30.39% were hospitalized, and four patients died.CONCLUSION: Acute poisoning is largely alcohol poisoning and medication poisoning in a city. The emergency green channel "pre-hospital emergency care-emergency department-hospital treatment" can significantly improve the survival rate of patients with acute poisoning. 展开更多

Iron and titanium were recovered from beach titanomagnetite(TTM) concentrate by embedding direct reduction and magnetic separation. The reduction products and the effects of the reductant type and reduction temperature on the reduction behavior were investigated. The results showed that the reduction of TTM concentrate was strongly related to the gasification reactivity of the reductant. Bitumite presented a better product index than wheat-straw biochar and coke, mainly because the gasification reactivity of bitumite was better than that of the other reductants. In addition, high temperatures were not beneficial to embedding direct reduction because of the emergence of a molten phase and iron-joined crystals, which in turn reduced the diffusion rate of the reducing gas and impeded the reduction reaction in the central area of the roasted briquette. The use of bitumite as the reductant at a C/Fe molar ratio of 1.4 and a reduction temperature of 1200°C for 120 min resulted in direct-reduction iron powder assaying 90.28 wt% TFe and 0.91 wt% TiO_2 with an iron recovery of 91.83% and titanium concentrate assaying 46.01 wt% TiO_2 with a TiO_2 recovery of 91.19%. Titanium existed mainly in the form of anosovite and ilmenite in the titanium concentrate. 展开更多

AIM: To investigate the interaction between heat shock protein 70 (HSP70) and α-fetoprotein (AFP) in human hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) cell line BEL7402.METHODS: The expression and localization of HSP70 and AFP in human HCC cell line BEL-7402 were determined by immunocytochemistry and indirect immunofluorescence cytochemical staining. The interaction between HSP70 and AFP in HCC cells was analyzed by immunoprecipitation and Western blot.RESULTS: Immunocytochemical staining detection showed that HCC cell BEL-7402 expressed a high level of HSP70 and AFP synchronously. Both were stained in cell plasma.AFP existed in the immunoprecipitate of anti-HSP70 mAb,while there was HSP70 in the immunoprecipitate of antiAFP mAb.CONCLUSION: HSP70 chaperones AFP in human HCCcell BEL-7402. The interaction between HSP70 and AFP in human HCC cell can be a new route to study the pathogenesis and immunotherapy of HCC. 展开更多

BACKGROUND Sudden hearing loss(SHL)is associated with serious systematic conditions such as neoplasms,vascular events,autoimmune diseases,infections,and iatrogenic injury.Some authors report that SHL can be an early warning sign of impending vertebrobasilar ischemic stroke.It is important to distinguish stroke from benign disease.CASE SUMMARY A 48-year-old male patient presented with SHL and vertigo as first symptoms.Diffusion-weighted imaging revealed high signal intensity in the left posterior inferior cerebellar artery territory of the cerebellar hemisphere and high signal intensity in the right pons and bridge cerebellar arm,confirming that the patient had cerebral infarction.Treatment with antiplatelet drugs,steroid antiinflammatory drugs,and neurotrophic nerve therapy promoted blood circulation and removed blood stasis,and the symptoms of the patient were significantly improved.CONCLUSION SHL and vertigo could be the initial symptoms of vertebrobasilar ischemic stroke. 展开更多

Numerous studies have demonstrated that Na2SO4 can significantly inhibit the reduction of iron oxide in the selective reduction process of laterite nickel ore. FeS generated in the process plays an important role in selective reduction, but the generation process of FeS and its inhibition mechanism on iron reduction are not clear. To figure this out, X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy analyses were conducted to study the roasted ore. The results show that when Na2SO4 is added in the roasting, the FeO content in the roasted ore increases accompanied by the emergence of FeS phase. Further analysis indicates that NaeS formed by the reaction of Na2SO4 with CO reacts with SiO2 at the FeO surface to generate FeS and Na2Si2Os. As a result, a thin film forms on the surface of FeO, hindering the contact between reducing gas and FeO. Therefore, the reduction of iron is depressed, and the FeO content in the roasted ore increases. 展开更多

Large scale utilization is still an urgent problem for waste red mud with a high content of alkaline metal component in the future.Laterite ores especially the saprolitic laterite ore are one refractory nickel resource,the nickel and iron of which can be effectively recovered by direct reduction and magnetic separation.Alkaline metal salts were usually added to enhance reduction of laterite ores.The feasibility of co-reduction roasting of a saprolitic laterite ore and red mud was investigated.Results show that the red mud addition promoted the reduction of the saprolitic laterite ore and the iron ores in the red mud were co-reduced and recovered.By adding 35wt%red mud,the nickel grade and recovery were 4.90wt%and 95.25wt%,and the corresponding iron grade and total recovery were 71.00wt%and 93.77wt%,respectively.The X-ray diffraction(XRD),scanning electron microscopy,and energy dispersive spectroscopy(SEM-EDS)analysis results revealed that red mud addition was helpful to increase the liquid phase and ferronickel grain growth.The chemical compositions"Ca O and Na_2O"in the red mud replaced Fe O to react with Si O_2 and Mg Si O_3 to form augite. 展开更多

This study investigates the reactions of Na2SO4 and its effects on iron and nickel reduction in the roasting of a high-iron and low-nickel laterite ore through gas composition, X-ray diffraction, and scanning electron microscope analyses. Results showed that a reduction reaction of Na2SO4 to SO2 was performed with roasting up to 600℃. However, no clear influence on iron and nickel reductions appeared, because only a small amount of Na2SO4 reacted to produce SO2. Na2SO4 reacted completely at 1000℃, mainly producing troilite and nepheline, which remarkably improves selective reduction of nickel. Furthermore, the production of low-melting-point minerals, including troilite and nepheline, accelerated nickel reduction and delayed iron reduction, which is attributed to the concurrent production of magnesium magnetite, whose structure is more stable than the structure of magnetite. Reduction reactions of Na2SO4 resulted in weakening of the reduction atmosphere, and the main product of Na2SO4 changed and delayed the reduction of iron. Eventually, iron metallization was effectively controlled during laterite ore reduction roasting, leading to iron mainly being found in wustite and high iron-containing olivine. 展开更多

We propose a novel approach to synthesize the nitrogen-doped graphene via thermal annealing graphene with urea, in which the nitrogen source can be controllably released from the urea by varying the annealed temperature and time. The doped N content and the configuration N as well as the thermal stabilities are also evaluated with X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and Raman spectra. Electrical measurements indi- cate that the conductivity of doped graphene can be well regulated with the N content. The method is expected to produce large scale and controllable N-doped graphene sheets for a variety of potential applications. 展开更多

BACKGROUND:Good neurological outcome after cardiac arrest(CA) is hard to achieve for clinicians.Experimental and clinical evidence suggests that therapeutic mild hypothermia is beneficial.This study aimed to assess the effectiveness and safety of therapeutic mild hypothermia in patients successfully resuscitated from CA using a meta-analysis.METHODS:We searched the MEDLINE(1966 to April 2012),OVID(1980 to April 2012),EMBASE(1980 to April 2012),Chinese bio-medical literature & retrieval system(CBM)(1978 to April 2012),Chinese medical current contents(CMCC)(1995 to April 2012),and Chinese medical academic conference(CMAC)(1994 to April 2012).Studies were included if 1) the study design was a randomized controlled trial(RCT);2) the study population included patients successfully resuscitated from CA,and received either standard post-resuscitation care with normothermia or mild hypothermia;3) the study provided data on good neurologic outcome and survival to hospital discharge.Relative risk(RR) and 95%confidence interval(CI) were used to pool the effect.RESULTS:The study included four RCTs with a total of 417 patients successfully resuscitated from CA.Compared to standard post-resuscitation care with normothermia,patients in the hypothermia group were more likely to have good neurologic outcome(RR=1.43,95%CI 1.14-1.80,P=0.002) and were more likely to survive to hospital discharge(RR=1.32,95%CI 1.08-1.63,P=0.008).There was no significant difference in adverse events between the normothermia and hypothermia groups(P>0.05),nor heterogeneity and publication bias.CONCLUSION:Therapeutic mild hypothermia improves neurologic outcome and survival in patients successfully resuscitated from CA. 展开更多

Mixed oxide photocatalysts, ZnO-Zn2SnO4 (ZnO-ZTO) nanowires with different sizes were prepared by a simple thermal evaporation method. The ZnO-ZTO nanowires were characterized with a scanning electron microscope, X-ray diffraction, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, energy-dispersive spectrom- eter, and X-ray photoelectron spectra. The photocatalytic activity of the ZnO-ZTO mixed nanowires were studied by observing the photodegradation behaviors of methyl orange aqueous solution. The results suggest that the ZnO-ZTO mixed oxide nanowires have a higher photocatalytic activity than pure ZnO and Zn2SnO4 nanowires. The photocatalyst concentration in the solution distinctly affects the degradation rate, and our results show that higher photodegradation efficiency can be achieved with a smaller amount of ZnO-ZTO nanowire catalyst, as compared to the pure ZnO and ZTO nanowires. Moreover, the photocatalytic activity can also be enhanced by reducing the average diameter of the nanowires. The activity of pure ZnO and ZTO nanowires are also enhanced by physically mixing them. These results can be explained by the synergism between the two semiconductors. 展开更多

Bradykinin(BK)is an active component of the kallikrein-kinin system that has been shown to have cardioprotective and neuroprotective effects.We previously showed that BK postconditioning strongly protects rat hippocampal neurons upon restoration of spontaneous circulation(ROSC)after cardiac arrest.However,the precise mechanism underlying this process remains poorly understood.In this study,we treated a rat model of ROSC after cardiac arrest(induced by asphyxiation)with 150μg/kg BK via intraperitoneal injection 48 hours after ROSC following cardiac arrest.We found that BK postconditioning effectively promoted the recovery of rat neurological function after ROSC following cardiac arrest,increased the amount of autophagosomes in the hippocampal tissue,inhibited neuronal cell apoptosis,up-regulated the expression of autophagy-related proteins LC3 and NBR1 and down-regulated p62,inhibited the expression of the brain injury marker S100βand apoptosis-related protein caspase-3,and affected the expression of adenosine monophosphate-activated protein kinase/mechanistic target of rapamycin pathway-related proteins.Adenosine monophosphate-activated protein kinase inhibitor compound C clearly inhibited BK-mediated activation of autophagy in rats after ROSC following cardiac arrest,which aggravated the injury caused by ROSC.The mechanistic target of rapamycin inhibitor rapamycin enhanced the protective effects of BK by stimulating autophagy.Our findings suggest that BK postconditioning protects against injury caused by ROSC through activating the adenosine monophosphate-activated protein kinase/mechanistic target of the rapamycin pathway. 展开更多

AIM: To investigate the effects of fluoxetine on depression-induced changes of mast cell morphology and protease-1 (rMCP-1) expression in rats. METHODS: A Sprague-Dawley rat model of chronic stress-induced depression was established. Fifty experimental rats were randomly divided into the following groups: normal control group, fluoxetine + normal control group, depressed model group, saline + depressed model group, and fluoxetine + depressed model group. Laser scanning confocal microscopy (LSCM) immunofluorecence and RT-PCR techniques were used to investigate rMCP-1 expression in gastric antrum. Mast cell morphology was observed under transmission electron microscopy. ANOVA was used for statistical analysis among groups.RESULTS: Morphologic observation indicated that depression induced mast cell proliferation, activation, and granule hyperplasia. Compared with the normal control group, the average immunofluorescence intensity of gastric antrum rMCP-1 significantly increased in depressed model group (37.4 ± 7.7 vs 24.5 ± 5.6, P < 0.01) or saline + depressed model group (39.9 ± 5.0 vs 24.5 ± 5.6, P < 0.01), while there was no significant difference between fluoxetine + normal control group (23.1 ± 3.4) or fluoxetine + depressed model group (26.1 ± 3.6) and normal control group.The average level of rMCP-1mRNA of gastric antrum significantly increased in depressed model group (0.759 ± 0.357 vs 0.476 ± 0.029, P < 0.01) or saline + depressed model group (0.781 ± 0.451 vs 0.476 ± 0.029, P < 0.01 ), while no significant difference was found between fluoxetine + normal control group (0.460 ± 0.027) or fluoxetine + depressed model group (0.488 ± 0.030) and normal control group. Fluoxetine showed partial inhibitive effects on mast cell ultrastructural alterations and de-regulated rMCP-1 expression in gastric antrum of the depressed rat model.CONCLUSION: Chronic stress can induce mast cell proliferation, activation, and granule hyperplasia in gastric antrum. Fluoxetine counteracts such changes in the depressed rat model. 展开更多

BACKGROUND: In 2011, a pilot program for deceased organ donation was initiated in China. We describe the first successful series of liver transplants in the pilot program.METHODS: From July 2011 to August 2012, our center performed 26 liver transplants from a pool of 29 deceased donors. All organ donation and allograft procurement were conducted according to the national protocol. The clinical data of donors and recipients were collected and summarized retrospectively.RESULTS: Among the 29 donors, 24 were China Category II donors(organ donation after cardiac death), and five were China Category III donors(organ donation after brain death followed by cardiac death). The recipients were mainly the patients with hepatocellular carcinoma. The one-year patient survival rate was 80.8% with a median follow-up of 422(2-696) days. Among the five mortalities during the follow-up,three died of tumor recurrence. In terms of post-transplant complications, 9 recipients(34.6%) experienced early allograft dysfunction, 1(3.8%) had non-anastomotic biliary stricture,and 1(3.8%) was complicated with hepatic arterial thrombosis.None of these complications resulted in patient death. Notably,primary non-function was not observed in any of the grafts.CONCLUSION: With careful donor selection, liver transplant from deceased donors can be performed safely and plays acritical role in overcoming the extreme organ shortage in China. 展开更多

BACKGROUND:Calcium calmodulin-dependent kinase II(CaMKII) can be more active in patients with left ventricular hypertrophy(LVH),which in turn causes phosphorylation of ryanodine receptors,resulting in inactivation and the instability of intracellular calcium homeostasis.The present study aimed to determine the effect of CaMKII-ryanodine receptor pathway signaling in rabbits with left ventricular hypertrophy and triggered ventricular arrhythmia.METHODS:Forty New Zealand rabbits were randomized into four groups(10 per group):sham group,LVH group,KN-93 group(LVH+KN-93),and ryanodine group(LVH+ryanodine).Rabbits in the LVH,KN-93,and ryanodine groups were used to establish a left ventricular hypertrophy model by the coarctation of the abdominal aorta,while those in the sham group did not undergo the coarctation.After eight weeks,action potentials(APs) were recorded simultaneously in the endocardium and epicardium,and a transmural electrocardiogram(ECG) was also recorded in the rabbit left ventricular wedge model.Drugs were administered to the animals in the KN-93 and ryanodine groups,and the frequency of triggered APs and ventricular tachycardia was recorded after the rabbits were given isoprenaline(1 μmol/L) and high-frequency stimulation.RESULTS:The frequency(animals/group) of triggered APs was 0/10 in the sham group,10/10 in the LVH group,4/10 in the KN-93 group,and 1/10 in the ryanodine group.The frequencies of ventricular tachycardia were 0/10,9/10,3/10,and 1/10,respectively.The frequencies of polymorphic ventricular tachycardia or ventricular fibrillation were 0/10,7/10,2/10,and 1/10,respectively.The frequencies of triggered ventricular arrhythmias in the KN-93 and ryanodine groups were much lower than those in the LVH group(P<0.05).CONCLUSIONS:KN-93 and ryanodine can effectively reduce the occurrence of triggered ventricular arrhythmia in rabbits with LVH.The CaMKII-ryanodine signaling pathway can be used as a new means of treating ventricular arrhythmia. 展开更多

We systematically investigated the electrical nanoplates through field effect transistor and properties of spiral-type and smooth Bi2Se3 conductive atomic force microscopy (CAFM) measurement. It is observed that both nanoplates possess high conductivity and show metallic-like behavior. Compared to the smooth nanoplate, the spiral-type one exhibits the higher carrier concentration and lower mobility. CAFM characterization reveals that the conductance at the screw-dislocation edge is even higher than that on the terrace, implying that the dislocation can supply excess carriers to compensate the low mobility and achieve high conductivity. The unique structure and electrical properties make the spiral-type Bi2 Se3 nanoplates a good candidate for catalysts and gas sensors. 展开更多

Magnesium titanate was prepared directly through external coal reduction of seashore titanomagnetite concentrate and magnesium oxide(MgO).The effects of roasting temperature and the type and dosage of reductants on the purity of generated magnesium titanate particles were systematically investigated.Scanning electron microscopy and energy-dispersive spectroscopy analyses were performed to characterize the magnesium titanate particles and observe their purity under different conditions.Results showed that the roasting temperature remarkably influenced the purity of magnesium titanate.At 1200,1300,and 1400℃,some magnesium ferrite and magnesium aluminate spinel were dissolved in magnesium titanate.However,as the roasting temperature increased to 1500℃,relatively pure magnesium titanate particles were generated because no magnesium ferrite was dissolved in them.The type and dosage of the reductants also remarkably affected the purity of magnesium titanate.The amount of fine metallic iron disseminated in the magnesium titanate particles obviously decreased when lignite was used as a reductant at a dosage of 70wt%.Thus,high-purity magnesium titanate particles formed.At a roasting temperature of 1500℃and with 70wt%lignite,the magnesium titanate product with a yield of 30.63%and an iron content of 3.01wt%was obtained through magnetic separation. 展开更多

ZnO bicrystalline nanosheets have been synthesized by using Ax=AU1-x alloy catalyst via the vapor transport and condensation method at 650 ℃. High resolution transmission electron microscopy characterization reveals a twin boundary with {01-13} plane existing in the bicrystalline. A series of control experiments show that both AgxAu1-x alloy catalyst and high supersaturation of Zn vapor are prerequisites for the formation of ZnO bicrystalline nanosheet. Moreover, it is found that the density of ZnO bicrytalline nanosheets can be tuned through varying the ratio of Ag to Au in the alloy catalyst. The result demonstrates that new complicated nanostructures can be produced controllably with appropriate alloy catalyst. 展开更多

We have developed a simple, productive, and ettectlve poly(cllmetnysltoxane) rranu fer method to fabricate highly conductive Pd nanowires following DNA scaffolds on various substrates, based on ethanolreduction at low temperature. Pd nanoparticles were selectively deposited and confined onto the DNA templates on a PDMS sheet to form Pd nanowires and then the nanowires were transferred to other various substrates with a low occurrence of par asitic nanoparticles. The structure, morphology and the conductance of Pd nanowires were characterized with transmission electron microscopy, field emission scanning electron mi croscopy, and electrical transport measurement, respectively. Moreover, the growth process of the Pd nanowires was investigated by varying the incubation time and reaction temper ature. The present strategy provides a new method to fabricate extremely dense, highly conductive, and well aligned Pd nanowires on various substrates, which make it promising for building nanosensors and nanoelectronic devices. 展开更多
