Reid, Lancaster, Tuxpeno and Suwan are the most common maize (Zea mays L.) germplasms. Reid × Lancaster and Suwan × Tuxpeno are very important heterotic patterns in temperate areas and tropical areas, respectively. Broadening the genetic basis of maize has usually been conducted in inter-populations formed by crossing temperate and tropical germplasms. Reciprocal recurrent selection (RRS) is a breeding procedure to improve the inter-populational cross of two base populations. The objective of this study was to evaluate the direct and indirect effects of reciprocal recurrent selection on grain yield in the TR (Tuxpeno-Reid) and SL (Suwan-Lancaster) maize populations. The populations and the inter-populational crosses of each selection cycle, as well as two commercial hybrids, were evaluated in four environments. The effect of mean grain yield on TR × SL inter-population crosses was 4.63% (or 0.365 Mg·ha-1) cycle-1. The grain yield of SL increased by 2.78% (or 0.20 Mg·ha-1) cycle-1, but the grain yield of TR essentially did not change. Most changes in other agronomic traits occurred in the desired direction. After 3 selection cycles, the ear tip-barrenness length decreased in TR × SL, TR and SL by 39.70%, 37.50% and 24.57%, respectively, which indicates that the increase in grain yield may be largely due to a decreasing ear tip-barrenness length. The mid-parent heterosis of grain yield of the inter-populational cross increased from 15.49% to 25.96% from C0 to C3. The mean grain yields of TRC3 × SLC3 were 100.01% and 103.88% of the mean grain yields of the commercial single-crosses GD8 and QD16, respectively. The results suggest that Tuxpeno-Reid × Suwan-Lancaster may be possible new heterotic patterns in the southern region of China. 展开更多

Mathematical model of deoxidization with post stirring in a combined blowing converter

However, post stirring in a combined blowing converter can promote the carbon-oxygen reaction in the liquid steel and reduce the dissolved oxygen content at the terminal of the converter smelting process. Thus, the mathematical model of deoxidization in the post stirring process was obtained, and the rationality of which was further verified by industrial tests. Finally, it is concluded that the product of dissolved carbon and oxygen, i.e. w[C]·w[O], decreases obviously after adopting the new technique of post stirring in the combined blowing converter. 展开更多

Cardiovascular diseases are a major cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide and there is an urgent need to develop new pharmacotherapies for managing cardiovascular diseases.In China,traditional Chinese medicine has been used in clinical settings for thousands of years.Although traditional Chinese medicine is very popular,Western medicine experts have not yet accepted it because some ingredients and mechanisms of action for its therapeutic effect are not fully clear.Emerging evidence has established that traditional Chinese medicine inhibits oxidative stress and inflammatory response,suppresses apoptosis,promotes angiogenesis,regulates autophagy and gut microbiota,and modulates metabolomics,among others.Therefore,it has a beneficial role against cardiovascular disease occurrence and progression,such as atherosclerosis,hypertension,myocardial ischemia/reperfusion injury,myocardial infarction,cardiomyopathy,arrhythmia,cardiac remodeling,pulmonary arterial hypertension,and heart failure.In this review,we have summarized the research progress on the relevant mechanisms by which traditional Chinese medicine regulates cardiovascular diseases in 2020 to reveal its application to cardiovascular disease prevention and/or therapy. 展开更多

Researchers have widely acknowledged the therapeutic value of epilepsy surgery for drug-resistant epilepsy.None-theless,there is a substantial gap in the surgical treatment for appropriate candidates owing to several factors,particularly in the population of young children.To standardize the protocols of preoperative evaluation and sur-gery of young children for epilepsy surgery,the China Association Against Epilepsy has appointed an expert task force to standardize the protocols of preoperative evaluation and surgery in pediatric epilepsy patients.It adopted the modifed Delphi method and performed two rounds of surveys through an anonymous inquiry among 75 experts from four subgroups including pediatric neurologists,epileptologists,pediatric epilepsy surgeons,and functional neurosurgeons.The survey contents contained:(1)the participants,comprising children aged≤6 years;(2)adopted DRE definition proposed by the International League Against Epilepsy in 2010;and(3)investigated epilepsy surgery,principally referring to curative epilepsy surgeries.The neuromodulation therapies were excluded because of the differences in treatment mechanisms from the above-mentioned surgeries.According to the Delphi process,a con-sensus was achieved for most aspects by incorporating two rounds of surveys including preoperative assessment,sur-gical strategies and techniques,and perioperative and long-term postoperative management,despite controversial opinions on certain items.We hope the results of this consensus will improve the level of surgical treatment and man-agement of intractable epilepsy in young children. 展开更多

Traumatic brain injury(TBI)triggers the activation of the endogenous coagulation mechanism,and a large amount of thrombin is released to curb uncontrollable bleeding through thrombin receptors,also known as protease-activated receptors(PARs).However,thrombin is one of the most critical factors in secondary brain injury.Thus,the PARs may be effective targets against hemorrhagic brain injury.Since the PAR1 antagonist has an increased bleeding risk in clinical practice,PAR4 blockade has been suggested as a more promising treatment.Here,we explored the expression pattern of PAR4 in the brain of mice after TBI,and explored the effect and possible mechanism of BMS-986120(BMS),a novel selective and reversible PAR4 antagonist on secondary brain injury.Treatment with BMS protected against TBI in mice.mRNA-seq analysis,Western blot,and qRT-PCR verification in vitro showed that BMS significantly inhibited thrombin-induced inflammation in astrocytes,and suggested that the Tab2/ERK/NF-κB signaling pathway plays a key role in this process.Our findings provide reliable evidence that blocking PAR4 is a safe and effective intervention for TBI,and suggest that BMS has a potential clinical application in the management of TBI. 展开更多

Traumatic brain injury(TBI)-induced coagulopathy has increasingly been recognized as a significant risk factor for poor outcomes,but the pathogenesis remains poorly understood.In this study,we aimed to investigate the causal role of acrolein,a typical lipid peroxidation product,in TBI-induced coagulopathy,and further explore the underlying molecular mechanisms.We found that the level of plasma acrolein in TBI patients suffering from coagulopathy was higher than that in those without coagulopathy.Using a controlled cortical impact mouse model,we demonstrated that the acrolein scavenger phenelzine prevented TBI-induced coagulopathy and recombinant ADAMTS-13 prevented acrolein-induced coagulopathy by cleaving von Willebrand factor(VWF).Our results showed that acrolein may contribute to an early hypercoagulable state after TBI by regulating VWF secretion.mRNA sequencing(mRNA-seq)and transcriptome analysis indicated that acrolein over-activated autophagy,and subsequent experiments revealed that acrolein activated autophagy partly by regulating the Akt/mTOR pathway.In addition,we demonstrated that acrolein was produced in the perilesional cortex,affected endothelial cell integrity,and disrupted the blood-brain barrier.In conclusion,in this study we uncovered a novel pro-coagulant effect of acrolein that may contribute to TBI-induced coagulopathy and vascular leakage,providing an alternative therapeutic target. 展开更多

Clinical advances in the treatment of intracranial hemorrhage(ICH)are restricted by the incomplete understanding of the molecular mechanisms contributing to secondary brain injury.Acrolein is a highly active unsaturated aldehyde which has been implicated in many nervous system diseases.Our results indicated a significant increase in the level of acrolein after ICH in mouse brain.In primary neurons,acrolein induced an increase in mitochondrial fragmentation,loss of mitochondrial membrane potential,generation of reactive oxidative species,and release of mitochondrial cytochrome c.Mechanistically,acrolein facilitated the translocation of dynaminrelated protein 1(Drpl)from the cytoplasm onto the mitochondrial membrane and led to excessive mitochondrial fission.Further studies found that treatment with hydralazine(an acrolein scavenger)significantly reversed Drpl translocation and the morphological damage of mitochondria after ICH.In parallel,the neural apoptosis,brain edema,and neurological functional deficits induced by ICH were also remarkably alleviated.In conclusion,our results identify acrolein as an important contributor to the secondary brain injury following ICH.Meanwhile,we uncovered a novel mechanism by which Drpl-mediated mitochondrial oxidative damage is involved in acroleininduced brain injury. 展开更多

Background:The alien hand phenomenon(AHP)is a rare disorder of involuntary limb movement together with a loss of sense of limb ownership.AHP occurs as a consequence of frontal,callosal,or posterior cerebral lesions.To characterize the phenomenon of AHP,three patients with paroxysmal AHP were described and proved to be focal seizures by using video-EEG monitoring.Method:Clinical history of 3 epileptic patients with AHP was collected.EEG and MRI were performed in each patient.One patient completed EEG monitoring and postoperative pathological examination.We also review the recent literatures and summarize the characteristics,types and hypothetic mechanisms of epileptic AHP.Results:Case 1 had AHP of the left arm followed by the left arm convulsion or AHP only.MRI imaging showed a lesion in the posterior parietal lobe.After complete resection of the lesion,he remained seizure free for 1.5 years.Cases 2 and 3 had AHP and convulsion.The three cases did not have auto-motor signs,so they were identified to be the posterior type of APH.Conclusions:The mechanism underlying AHP remains poorly.understood.Currently,little is known for the epileptic paroxysmal AHP,a quite rare form of AHP.AHP can be represented before or immediately after convulsion,or be represented by the paroxysmal symptom only. 展开更多

Developing non-precious metal catalysts to selectively reduce functionalized nitroarenes with high efficiency is urgently desirable for the production of value-added amines.Herein,we report a novel,efficient,anti-poisoning single-atom cobalt catalyst(Co-NAC)for the highly selective hydrogenation of the nitro to amino group for nitroarenes baring various functional groups,including vinyl,cyano,and halogen.Using a combination of structure characterization techniques,we have confirmed that the cobalt species are predominantly present in the form of four-coordinated Co single sites anchored on nitrogen-assembly carbon(NAC)as the ordered mesoporous support.Co-NAC catalysts enable the full conversion and>99%selectivity with molecular H2 as a green reductant under mild conditions(80℃,2 MPa H2).As for the selective hydrogenation of 3-nitrostyrene,Co-NAC catalyst affords high catalytic productivity(19.7 h-1),which is superior to the cobalt nanoparticles(NPs)catalysts and most of the recently reported Co-based catalysts.This is attributed to the highly accessible atomically-dispersed Co active sites,the high surface area with ordered-mesoporous morphology and the prominent high content of nitrogen dopants.Notably,Co-NAC catalyst displays resistance towards sulfur-containing poisons(20 equivalents)and strong non-oxidizing acid(8 M),showing great potential for continuous application in the chemical industry. 展开更多

Death after discharge:prognostic model of 1-year mortality in traumatic brain injury patients undergoing decompressive craniectomy

Background:Despite advances in decompressive craniectomy(DC)for the treatment of traumatic brain injury(TBI),these patients are at risk of having a poor long-term prognosis.The aim of this study was to predict 1-year mortality in TBI patients undergoing DC using logistic regression and random tree models.Methods:This was a retrospective analysis of TBI patients undergoing DC from January 1,2015,to April 25,2019.Patient demographic characteristics,biochemical tests,and intraoperative factors were collected.One-year mortality prognostic models were developed using multivariate logistic regression and random tree algorithms.The overall accuracy,sensitivity,specificity,and area under the receiver operating characteristic curves(AUCs)were used to evaluate model performance.Results:Of the 230 patients,70(30.4%)died within 1 year.Older age(OR,1.066;95%CI,1.045-1.087;P<0.001),higher Glasgow Coma Score(GCS)(OR,0.737;95%CI,0.660-0.824;P<0.001),higherD-dimer(OR,1.005;95%CI,1.001-1.009;P=0.015),coagulopathy(OR,2.965;95%CI,1.808-4.864;P<0.001),hypotension(OR,3.862;95%CI,2.176-6.855;P<0.001),and completely effaced basal cisterns(OR,3.766;95%CI,2.255-6.290;P<0.001)were independent predictors of 1-year mortality.Random forest demonstrated better performance for 1-year mortality prediction,which achieved an overall accuracy of 0.810,sensitivity of 0.833,specificity of 0.800,and AUC of 0.830 on the testing data compared to the logistic regression model.Conclusions:The random forest model showed relatively good predictive performance for 1-year mortality in TBI patients undergoing DC.Further external tests are required to verify our prognostic model. 展开更多

As an essential part of DC-Link in the power converter,capacitor plays a crucial role in absorbing ripple current and suppressing ripple voltage.The health and residual service life of the DC-Link capacitor is one of the decisive factors for the safety,stability,and efficiency of the system in which it is located.Aiming at the shortcomings of existing methods,such as low dynamic sensitivity of data update and fluctuation of identification results,a capacitor state identification method based on improved RLS is proposed in this paper.The proposed method is optimized by introducing the forgetting factor algorithm and root means square algorithm to modify the iterative formula and final identification results.Compared with existing methods,this method can identify the capacitor’s current state in real time and accurately.Finally,we successfully verified the accuracy,robustness,and adaptability of the proposed method by a series of experimental tests on a dSPACE platform. 展开更多

Objective:Only a few studies have investigated the development trends in spatial working memory and attention among a large sample of primary school students over a wide range of ages,while the efficiency of learning and memory processes is fundamental to academic performance,particularly for children,who are in a key developmental stage when their life opportunities can be altered.We aimed to explore how the spatial working memory and attention of primary school children are affected by grade,academic performance,and sex.Methods:In this cross-sectional observational study,students(144 boys,139 girls,6–13 years old)were recruited from Experimental Primary School Affiliated to Shanghai Jiao Tong University in Shanghai,China in 2018.The study protocol was reviewed and approved by the Bio-Ethics Board of the Bio-X Institutes,Shanghai Jiao Tong University.Based on a simple Spatial Working Memory and Attention Test on Paired Symbols test,we evaluate 283 participants’working memory and attention ability.Results:Attention and working memory performance were enhanced as a positive function of grade in primary school children,and students who showed better academic achievement also performed better on the working memory task.However,attention and working memory performance were not affected by sex.Conclusion:Attention and working memory performance of primary school students develop with grade and corresponds to Better academic performance.Attention and working memory ability do not differ significantly between boys and girls. 展开更多
