BACKGROUND Endometrial cancer is a kind of well-known tumors of female genitourinary system.Cervical stromal invasion is an adverse factor for poor prognosis of endometrial cancer.There is still controversy regarding ...BACKGROUND Endometrial cancer is a kind of well-known tumors of female genitourinary system.Cervical stromal invasion is an adverse factor for poor prognosis of endometrial cancer.There is still controversy regarding the use of magnetic resonance imaging(MRI)in the diagnosis of cervical stromal invasion of endometrial cancer.The diagnosis of cervical stromal invasion varies significantly between different observers and institutions.We present a limited case series of the particular pattern of endometrial cancer,which infiltrates the cervical stroma and is often overlooked.CASE SUMMARY We present three cases of endometrial carcinoma with cervical stromal invasion with cancer-free uterine cavity.One patient,a reproductive-aged woman,exhibited irregular menstruation and was diagnosed with endometrial polyps by hysteroscopy and segmental curettage.A MRI scan revealed polypoid nodules within the internal cervical orifice.The other two cases were postmenopausal women who presented with abnormal vaginal bleeding.Hysteroscopy and segmental curettage suggested atypical hyperplasia of the endometrium.MRI scans did not detect any malignant signs in the endometrium.In one case,a nonthickened endometrium was observed,while in another,hyperplasia of the endometrium was seen.Notably,none of these patients had malignant tumors identified in the uterine cavity via MRI scans.However,postoperative pathological results following hysterectomy consistently indicated cervical stromal invasion.CONCLUSION Cervical stromal invasion is easily missed if no cancer is found in the uterine body on MRI.Immunohistochemistry of endoscopic curettage specimens should be conducted to avoid underestimation of the disease.展开更多

This study aimed to analyze the characteristics of mortality in a pediatric emergency department(PED) at a tertiar...BACKGROUND: The quality of treatment for critically ill children varies widely at different hospitals. This study aimed to analyze the characteristics of mortality in a pediatric emergency department(PED) at a tertiary children's hospital in Guangzhou, China and to investigate the risk factors associated with the mortality.METHODS: The mortality of pediatric patients at the hospital from 2011 to 2013 was retrospectively analyzed using descriptive statistics.RESULTS: Altogether 466 919 patients visited the PED during the period and 43 925 of them were admitted for further observation. In 230 deaths, the ratio of boys to girls was 1.4:1, and their age ranged from 2 hours to 16 years(median, 5 months). The time from admission to death ranged from 0 to 216 hours(median, 1.5 hours). There were 92(40%) patients who died within 24 hours after admission and 104(45.2%) patients who died on arrival. The prominent causes of the deaths were respiratory diseases, neuromuscular disorders, cardiovascular diseases, and sepsis, most of which were ascribed to severe infection. Sixty-five deaths were associated with more than one concomitant problem. The top concomitant problems were congenital malformation, low gestational age, and severe birth asphyxia.CONCLUSIONS: In our center, 40% of the patients in the PED died of fatal acute diseases, and pneumonia was the first leading cause of the deaths. Almost half of the deaths occurred on arrival and the rest were due to end-stage malignant diseases. This study emphasized the importance of prevention of birth deficits by reducing deaths in infants and children.展开更多

The effects of zeta potentials of S. metallicus samples on chalcopyri...The chalcopyrite-adsorption characteristics and leaching properties of Sulfolobus metallicus(S. metallicus) YN24 were investigated in this study. The effects of zeta potentials of S. metallicus samples on chalcopyrite cultivated with distinct sources of energy were similar. Regardless of the energy source cultivated, all of the investigated S. metallicus samples adhered rapidly to the chalcopyrite surface, with an adhesion plateau being reached within 60 min. However, the mineral-cultured S. metallicus adsorbed more strongly onto chalcopyrite than the sulfur-cultured S. metallicus did. Furthermore, chalcopyrite-leaching tests suggested that the copper-leaching ability of the mineral-cultured S. metallicus was also greater than that of unadapted S. metallicus. Therefore, the results provide insights into the mechanism of mineral-surface adsorption of microorganisms that helps enhance the copper-leaching rate.展开更多
