Areas of the planet that have the potential to house persons migrating to “safe havens” in their own or other countries will require the rapid construction of communities capable of supporting them, their families, businesses and farms. However, different political-economic conditions are found across the areas which can serve as locations for these Climate Change Haven Communities. We develop funding and construction strategies for the United States (free-market capitalism), France and Spain (European Union supported economies), and Taiwan region (state-directed economy). The proposals for the Taiwan region should also be applicable to the rest of China.展开更多

It is characterised by the replacement of the thyroid parenchyma by fibrous tissue. It also affects the adjacent vital structures. Due to its characteristic presentations, Riedel’s thyroiditis may not be immediately diagnosed. Objectives: Through this clinical case, we aimed to describe the pathology and clinical characteristics of Riedel’s thyroiditis and the diagnostic, therapeutic, and progressive modalities. Methods: A 62-year-old woman with no particular pathological history is consulted at the outpatient clinic for anterior cervical swelling that has been present for more than 5 years and is associated with respiratory discomfort and dysphagia to solids. Clinical examination, ultrasound, lab tests and injected cervical computed tomography (CT) were performed. These tests were completed with pathological examination. Results: General conditions were normal. Anterior cervical swelling, marked on the right, of hard consistency, causing cervical shielding with healthy surrounding skin, was observed at the examination. A compressive goitre was first suspected. Thyroid tests showed hypothyroidism. The CT revealed a hypodense goitre with micro-calcifications developed at the expense of the right lobe and exerting a mass effect on the trachea and oesophagus. Aspiration thyroid was not conclusive given the suspicion of the malignant nature of the goitre, and the decision to perform a right loboisthmectomy was taken. Pathological examination of the biopsy showed atrophy of the thyroid parenchyma with dense septal fibrosis punctuated by lymphocytes and extending throughout the tissue associated with inflammation—an appearance in favour of Riedel’s thyroiditis. The patient was treated with Levothyroxine and corticoids. Conclusions: This case points out the challenges in diagnosing Riedel’s Thyroiditis and the complexity of the pathology that requires a rigorous diagnostic approach and appropriate treatment for the best outcome.展开更多

By studying words, sentences, and interpunctions in texts, the theory defines deep-language variables and linguistic channels. These mathematical entities are due to writer’s unconscious design and can reveal connections between texts far beyond writer’s awareness. The analysis, based on 3,225,839 words contained in 118,952 sentences, shows that ancient Greek writers, and their readers, were not significantly different from modern writers/readers. Their sentences were processed by a short-term memory modelled with two independent processing units in series, just like modern readers do. In a society in which people were used to memorize information more often than modern people do, the ancient writers wrote almost exactly, mathematically speaking, as modern writers do and for readers of similar characteristics. Since meaning is not considered by the theory, any text of any alphabetical language can be studied exactly with the same mathematical/statistical tools and comparisons are possible, regardless of different languages and epochs of writing.展开更多

This examination marks the shift from the traditional actuarial methods to a dynamically data-driven approach. Some key innovations include the buzz around Large Language Models (LLMs) for customer interaction, Internet of Things (IoT) enabled risk-monitoring in real time and Machine Learning allowing for automated claims processing. The research highlights the early adopters like AXA, Lemonade and Allianz who are actively leveraging AI to reduce claims processing times by 80% while reducing manual labour and increasing customer satisfaction. The most critical of this transformation is the emergence of roles that act like hybrid strategists. Such professionals combine traditional insurance expertise with acumen in technology. In our paper, we discuss the requirement of how AI demands more than just simple adoption. It needs a comprehensive restructuring of organizational culture, better data infrastructure and better ethical frameworks. Development in Explainable AI (XAI) is also noteworthy for maintaining transparency, handling complex risks and addressing regulatory requirements while alignment with customer trust concerns.展开更多

Côte d’Ivoire is one of the most vulnerable countries to schistosomiasis, and its prevalence varies by region. This cross-sectional survey was conducted in schools in the Upper Sassandra region to determine the knowledge, attitude, and practices of school children regarding schistosomiasis. In total, 354 students participated in the survey. Our results showed that, compared to the girls, the boys had a higher level of knowledge about schistosomiasis OR = 1.605 and p = 0.05. Regarding the signs, symptoms, and modes of transmission and prevention of schistosomiasis, the participants reported a low level of knowledge p > 0.05 and OR 1. In conclusion, it is important to target health messages in schools to reach the most vulnerable students effectively. This initiative aims to provide children with basic knowledge and skills in the transmission of schistosomiasis.展开更多

It empowers the learners to be in charge of their learning process and be the center of attention in language learning education. For this purpose, different AI tools were used and implemented in pedagogy to narrow the divide in promoting learning/teaching approaches. This study aims to gauge the impact of using LLM-ChatGPT to teach EFL learners the present simple tense autonomously via providing automated feedback, and chances for regular drillings without over reliance on teacher. It also aims to investigate the EFL learners’ perception of using LLM-ChatGPT as a reinforcement approach to learner autonomy. A cohort comprising 50 EFL learners would participate in the study and a between subject design method using control and experimental groups would be implemented. The findings of the study indicated that learners who were taught present simple tense’s rule through using LLM-ChatGPT application, with less teacher’s dominance, scored grades similar to those who were taught the same tense’s rule by the teacher (sage on the stage approach). This substantiates the idea that LLM-Chat GPT acts a role akin to teachers in teaching grammatical rules. Moreover, the learners felt that LLM-ChatGPT application had a positive impact on fostering autonomous learning.展开更多

It has been validated in both the general population in Mexico and other Latin American countries. This study aims to further consolidate the validity of the BIOS-G in a specific population. The objectives are to assess the psychometric properties of its items, validate its unidimensional structure, describe its distribution, verify its internal consistency, and examine its direct relationship with affective balance and positive affect, as well as its inverse relationship with emotional exhaustion and negative affect among Mexican university teachers. The BIOS-G, the CESQT emotional exhaustion subscale, and Scale of Positive and Negative Experience (SPANE) were administered to a non-probability sample of 213 Mexican university teachers. All items demonstrated discriminative power and internal consistency. The scale showed internal consistency (Green-Yang ordinal ω = 0.74 and McDonald ordinal ω = 0.88). The one-factor model presented good to acceptable fit to the data, with an average variance extracted of 0.65. Its distribution was negatively skewed and mesokurtic. The BIOS-G correlated directly with SPANE’s affective balance and positive emotional experiences and inversely with negative emotional experiences and emotional exhaustion, with moderate strengths of association. Its mean score was higher in men than in women and correlated positively with age. It is concluded that the BIOS-G demonstrates internal consistency and validity evidence among Mexican university teachers, and its use in this specific population is recommended.展开更多

文摘This mixed-methods study presents a needs analysis to investigate the workplace English language needs of medical students in China who are learning and using English as non-native speakers, the circumstances in which the various language skills are required, and stakeholders’perceived workplace preparedness in the light of language-related instructional provision during medical training.A leading university in China was chosen as the study case.Altogether,294 online questionnaires were collected from undergraduate medical students, graduate medical students and recent graduates working as physicians, and 33 semi-structured individual interviews were conducted with undergraduate medical students, graduate medical students, recent graduates working as physicians, medical teachers,English for Medical Purposes(EMP)teachers, program leaders and English-speaking patients. Results showed that in addition to physicians experiencing pressure to publish scientific articles internationally, participants attached greater importance to physicians’oral English communication ability, especially in undertaking clinical consultations in English, working with medical interpreters or acting as ad hoc interpreters. The participants also reported a lack of relevant EMP courses or trainings available at this university.Given these communicative events that physicians face in China,EMP courses need to include training in these specific areas.
文摘Schistosomiasis is a neglected tropical disease (NTD) widespread in sub-Saharan Africa and mostly affects school going children. This initiative aims to provide children with basic knowledge and skills in the transmission of schistosomiasis.
文摘Learner autonomy stands on the top priorities of scholars due to its pivotal role in fostering student-centered learning methods. Moreover, the learners felt that LLM-ChatGPT application had a positive impact on fostering autonomous learning.

文摘As world events have morphed teachers’roles within English medium of instruction(EMI)contexts to incorporate more online teaching practices, teachers’integration of digital tools has faced technological and curricular challenges. While previous research has examined the integration of digital tools in face-to-face and hybrid EMI settings(e.g.,Finardi,2015;O’Dowd,2018),more research is needed to understand the familiarization process teachers engage in as they implement fully-online teaching to support their content and language integrated learning(CLIL)teaching. As part of a larger project, this case study sets out to fill this gap by examining the practices and perspectives of 30 Kazakhstani university teachers who adopted CLIL approaches while needing to adapt to fully-online teaching contexts.Using the concept of technological pedagogical content knowledge(Mishra&Koehler,2006)in tandem with Ball et al.’s(2016)seven CLIL principles as a framework, this study thematically analyzed workshop artifacts, survey responses,semi-structured interview transcripts, and videos from online class lessons to find that teachers were mediators and curators of content, language, pedagogy, and digital tools. The findings offer pedagogical insights for the implementation of professional development(PD)to prepare teachers to meaningfully curate and mediate technology into their CLIL pedagogy to teach content within EMI contexts.
文摘The Brief Interactive Optimism Scale (BIOS-G), recently published, was developed to measure optimism based on the interactive personality styles theory in the general population of Mexican adults. It is concluded that the BIOS-G demonstrates internal consistency and validity evidence among Mexican university teachers, and its use in this specific population is recommended.
