Several different infra-familial classifications have been proposed for the Acanthaceae, but no taxonomic consensus has yet been reached. The main objective of the present study is to throw light on the phenetic relationships and to explore the contribution of morphological and molecular characters in systematics of Acanthaceae. The morphological data viz. macromorphology, stomatography, lamina architecture and ISSR profiles of 30 Egyptian acanthaceous taxa were investigated. The phenetic analysis using NTSYS-PC version 2.02 software based on 55 potentially informative morphological and molecular characters indicated that the used morphological and ISSR criteria is likely to be useful and valuable taxonomic traits. The morphological characters and ISSR aspects of all the studied species produced a phenogram that showed two series;one of them had two subseries, the first one comprised only three taxa while the second divided into two clusters, each contained two groups. The delimitation and the membership of the studied taxa clearly merit additional study using more criteria. The phenetic analysis of both morphological and molecular attributes clarified the segregation of genus Avicennia as a distinct identity away from Acanthaceae. Acanthus mollis & A. montanus are isolated in its own series that comparable to tribe Acantheae of the current taxonomic systems. The studied species of Thunbergia are gathered its own subseries that comparable to tribe Thunbergiae and Ruellia in its own group that comparable to tribe Ruellieae.展开更多

Although many of today’s medicinal yields are achieved synthetically, they are often modelled on the chemical composition of medicinal plants. In this accordance, Acanthus genus (Family Acanthaceae) has acknowledged considerable attention due to its wide range of secondary metabolites and its customary usage in Indian and Chinese system of medicine. It is worth to mention that A. ilicifolius is enormously medicinal among all the species of Acanthus genus. This plant is considered to be rich sources of steroids, triterpenoids, saponins, flavonoids, alkaloids, and tannins. Traditionally, the plant has been used for asthma, diabetes, dyspepsia, hepatitis, leprosy, neuralgia, paralysis, ringworm, skin disease, snake bite, leukemia. Toxicological investigation in mice model has showed that, the ethanolic extract of the leaves of this plant have no toxic effect up to dose of 1000 mg/kg BW, 2000 mg/kg BW dose have mild toxicity and 5000 mg/kg BW dose have caused toxic effect in some organ system like liver, heart, pancreas, lung and kidney. Different extract of this plant also exhibited Anti-inflammatory, anti-leishmanial, osteoblastic, hepatoprotective, antioxidant and anticancer activities. This review article is an endeavor to cover current expansion in phytochemical and pharmacological potential of this plant species which will be a good reference tool for investigators who wish to work on natural products.展开更多

Results:The successive extracts have an array of chemical constituents and the MIC values of antibacterial activity ranges from 0.007 8 to 0.015 0μg/mL.In case of antifungal and anticandidal activities the MIC values were between 0.125 and 0.250μg/mL.Conclusions:These findings demonstrate that the leaf extracts of C.infimdibuliformis presents excellent antimicrobial activities and thus have great potential as a source for natural health care products.展开更多

This plant is a well-known Asian medicinal plant that is widely used in India, China, and Thailand. A monograph of Herba Andrographidis (Chuanxinlian) is included in the Chinese Pharmacopoeia, which reports that this decoction can “remove heat, counteract toxicity, and reduce swellings.” The numerous potential activities of AG range from anti-inflammatory to anti-diabetic action, from neuroprotection to antitumor activity, and from hepatoprotective to anti-obesity properties. However, AG has low bioavailability and poor water solubility, which can limit its distribution and accumulation in the body after administration. In addition, AG is not stable in gastrointestinal alkaline and acidic environments, and has been reported to have a very short half-life. Among the diverse strategies that have been adopted to increase AG water solubility and permeability, the technological approach is the most useful way to develop appropriate delivery systems. This review reports on published studies related to microparticles (MPs) and nanoparticles (NPs) loaded with AG. MPs based on polylactic-glycolic acid (PLGA), alginic acid, and glucan derivatives have been developed for parenteral oral and pulmonary administration, respectively. NPs include vesicles (both liposomes and niosomes);polymeric NPs (based on polyvinyl alcohol, polymerized phenylboronic acid, PLGA, human serum albumin, poly ethylcyanoacrylate, and polymeric micelles);solid lipid NPs;microemulsions and nanoemulsions;gold NPs;nanocrystals;and nanosuspensions. Improved bioavailability, target-tissue distribution, and efficacy of AG loaded in the described drug delivery systems have been reported.展开更多
