Our study aims to study the epidemiological and therapeutic aspects of PSA of the diaphysis of long bones. Method: This retrospective work concerns 30 cases of non-union of the diaphysis of long bones treated in the orthopedic and trauma surgery department at Donka National Hospital, during a period of 18 months from January 1, 2019 to June 30, 2020. Results: We recruited 30 patients, 80% of whom were male, with an average age of 39.9 years. Public road accidents (AVP) represented the main cause of fractures of the diaphysis of long bones 87%, they were open in 25 cases or 83%. The fractures were located in the middle 1/3 of the diaphysis of the long bones in 50% of cases. Treatment of initial fractures was traditional in 21 cases, orthopedic in 2 cases and surgical in 7 cases. It was aseptic nonunion in 28 cases (93%) and septic nonunion in 2 cases. They were hypertrophic in 7 cases, slightly hypertrophic in 5 cases, oligotrophic in 11 cases, atrophic in 6 cases and with bone defect in 1 case. The treatment was based on osteosynthesis including 16 cases of screwed “PV” plate: 7 cases of centromedullary “ECM” nailing, 2 cases of external fixator, 1 case of broaching and 4 cases of Plastering. The results according to ASAMI criteria on an anatomical level were excellent in 19 cases, good in 3 cases and poor in 3 cases, with a union rate of 76%. And 5 patients undergoing consolidation. Conclusion: Based on the literature data and the experience of our department, the true treatment of PSA requires correct management of the initial fracture without forgetting the interest in preventing AVP which appears to be an element essential, making it possible to reduce the incidence of fractures of the diaphysis.展开更多

Methods: From January 2022 to December 2023, 70 patients with traumatic fractures of long bones in the lower extremities were admitted to the hospital and randomly divided into two groups: the control group and the observation group, each consisting of 35 cases. The control group underwent traditional closed interlocking intramedullary nailing, while the observation group received internal fixation with steel plates and screws. Relevant surgical indicators, treatment effectiveness, and postoperative complication rates were compared between the two groups. Results: The observation group exhibited significantly short surgical duration (80.65 ± 5.01 vs. 88.36 ± 5.26 minutes), fracture healing time (13.27 ± 0.32 vs. 15.52 ± 0.48 weeks), and hospitalization days (10.49 ± 1.13 vs. 16.57 ± 1.15 days) compared to the control group (P = 0.000). The effective treatment rate was significantly higher in the observation group (29/82.86%) than in the control group (21/60.00%), with a significant difference observed (χ2 = 4.480, P = 0.034). Additionally, the complication rate in the observation group (2/5.71%) was significantly lower than that in the control group (8/22.86%), with a correlated difference (χ2 = 4.200, P = 0.040). Conclusion: The plate screw internal fixation technique demonstrates significant clinical efficacy in treating traumatic fractures of long bones in the lower extremities. It improves the healing rate, reduces complications, and represents a safe and effective treatment strategy worthy of widespread use and application.展开更多

Others may present as subfertility, chronic pelvic pain, abnormal vaginal discharge, menometrorrhagia, dysmenorrhea and spontaneous expulsion of bony fragments. Incidence is 0.26% among patients undergoing hysteroscopy. Aim: To document a pattern of presentation of retained fetal bone and its management. Case Presentation: Our patient is an 18-year old who presented with vaginal bleeding of four weeks duration and managed for abnormal uterine bleeding due to retained fetal bone following second trimester abortion. Conclusion: The use of transvaginal ultrasound in making diagnosis of retained fetal bone is effective. Treatment by removal of bones through evacuation by dilatation and curettage or hysteroscopy brings about resolution of symptoms. Use of pelvic ultrasonography to confirm complete evacuation of the uterus after abortion especially second trimester abortion could aid in early diagnosis and management of incomplete abortion.展开更多

The present study was conducted to extract and characterize acid soluble collagens (ASC) and pepsin soluble collagens (PSC) from ovine bones (Ujumuqin sheep). Ovine bones collagen were identified by sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE) and liquid chromatography-tan- dem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) as type I collagen. The results of Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectra analysis testified the existence of triple superhelical structure in both ASC and PSC, showing pepsin did not disrupt the triple helical structure of ovine bones collagen. Glycine, accounting for one-third of total amino acids, was the major amino acid for ovine bones collagen. Higher imino acid content was responsible for higher thermal denaturation temperature of ovine bones collagen compared to fish collagens. The isoelectric point of ASC was lower than PSC due to the higher content of acidic amino acids. Therefore, this study provides the potential reference for collagen extraction and application of ovine bones by-procduct.展开更多

This is a rare bone proliferation with a pronounced periosteal reaction. Less than 100 cases have been described in the literature with far fewer outside the bones of the hand, feet, fingers, and toes. Although the etiology is unknown, a relationship to preceding trauma is suggested. The imaging and histologic features show an overlap with other bone lesions including bizarre parosteal osteochondromatous proliferation, subungual exostosis, and malignant surface tumors of bone and cartilage which include, periosteal and parosteal osteosarcoma. It is important to recognize the clinical presentation and diagnostic features of RPO as a benign entity so that it is not mistaken for a more aggressive neoplasm. We present a case of a right distal humeral lesion that on histopathological review revealed florid RPO. This diagnosis was not suspected on imaging studies, but was made on open biopsy of the mass. The patient remains disease free, years postoperatively. In addition to presenting this unique case report, we review the pertinent literature, and offer a differential diagnosis and treatment strategy for its management.展开更多

Firstly, a gradient based method was extended to generate motion sequences and garments were simulated on the sequences as our training data. Based on the examples, the proposed method can fast output realistic garments on new poses. Our framework can be mainly divided into offline phase and online phase. During the offline phase, based on linear blend skinning(LBS), rigid bones and flex bones were estimated for human bodies and garments, respectively. Then, rigid bone weight maps on garment vertices were learned from examples. In the online phase, new human poses were treated as input to estimate rigid bone transformations. Then, both rigid bones and flex bones were used to drive garments to fit the new poses. Finally, a novel formulation was also proposed to efficiently deal with garment-body penetration. Experiments manifest that our method is fast and accurate. The intersection artifacts are fast removed and final garment results are quite realistic.展开更多

In a post conflict environment, the abnormal movement of firearms and poverty from them may change the configuration’s epidemiological, anatomical and clinical fractures of the limbs bones as well as their care. Goal: To make an inventory on the fractures of the limb bones in Bukavu town, a town in post armed conflict. Method: This work is transversal, retrospective and descriptive on 500 fractures of the limbs bones recorded on a period of 3 months from 1st June to 31st August 2013. Twenty investigators went around different places of Bukavu town to interview and complete a research protocol ad hoc. In total, we recorded 500 subjects with 570 fractures of the limb bones. Results: The average age is 29.4 years old and 37% are male fractured. The main circumstances of occurrence of the fracture of the limbs bones are the falls (31.7%), firearms (22.2%) followed closely by road traffic accidents (21.9%). Students (38.6%) and the unemployed (29.4%) are most victims’ fractures of limb bones. The forearm bones (31.7%) and leg bones (27.2%) are most concerned, 52.2% fractured turned to modern medicine against 41.8% for traditional medicine. Conclusion: The fractures of the limbs bones in Bukavu mainly concern young male subjects. They occur with the waning of a fall and preferentially affect the bones of the forearm. Good governance would reduce the incidence of fractures of the limbs bones and their assessment.展开更多

Brachydactyly usually occurs either as an isolated malformation or as a part of a complex malformation syndrome. Brachydactyly is classified as types A, B, C, D, or E;brachymetatarsus IV;Sugarman brachydactyly;or Kirner deformity. Various types of isolated brachydactyly are rare, except for types A3 and D. We describe a 15-year-old girl with isolated brachyphalangism of the basal finger bones of the little finger with symptoms of tenosynovitis. Tenosynovitis might be caused by growth deviation between the flexor digitorum superficialis and the flexor digitorum profundus. The patient responded very well to surgical treatment.展开更多

In this work, we used the μCT to investigate the internal structure of bones from mammalian and poultry. We studied the bones of rats and quail. Through microtomography images, we observed that the bones of the poultry have a bony structure in the form of a trellis that is not present in bones of mammals. These trellises bony is an evolutionary adaptation that allowed the bones of the birds to become longer and lighter maintaining its strength. It was also observed that the percentage of the trabecular area in poultry is almost half of that observed in mammals. The results obtained validate the use of μCT as a technique that allows the study of bone structures in small samples, enabling to explore the morphological differences between the bones of those species.展开更多

Annuli on the opercula bones and scales were used to determine the age. The standard length of specimens examined varied between 12.50 and 29.80 cm and body weight 10-385 g. Annuli (growth rings) observed on the opercula bones of specimens with mean standard lengths 21.70 ± 1.4 cm had one real annulus, 24.80 ± 1.1 cm had two real annuli, 27.4 ± 0.9 cm had three real annuli indicating age one, two, and three (1 +, 2+, 3+ ) respectively. Growth rings observed on scales appeared as interruptions in the normal pattems of scales. Specimens with mean standard lengths of 21.3 ± 1.5 cm, 24.7 ± 0.8 cm and 27.35 ± 11 cm were interpreted to be ages 1+, 2+, and 3+ respectively. The maximum age of samples, derived from annuli on both opercula bones and scales was 3 years. Specimens below 18 cm standard length did not register any growth mark. The mean lengths at the estimated ages obtained using both opercula bones and scales were not significantly different (P 〉 0.05, P 〉 0.01).展开更多

Aim: Our study aimed was to describe the epidemiological and histopathological aspects of primary malignant bone cancers in Ivory Coast. Material and method: This is a retrospective and descriptive study of primary malignant bone cancers diagnosed over the period 1990 to 2013 (24 years). The studied parameters were: epidemiological aspects (frequency, age, sex, topography) and histological aspects. Results: Over the study period, primary malignant bone cancers accounted for 1.93% (n = 228) of cancers. The average age was 27.02 years with extremes of 2 and 85 years. The sex ratio was 1.65. They were in the skull and maxilla in 43.9% (n = 105), lower limbs (23.8%), spine and ribs (19.8%), pelvis (5.3%) and upper limbs (2.3%). The clinic was dominated by pain and alteration of general state. Radiology was variable depending on the histological type. In children, primary malignant bone cancers were found in the maxillary (77.9%) and the lower limb (15.8%). Burkitt’s lymphomas represented 36.4% (n = 66) of the histological types followed by 22.4% osteosarcomas (n = 51). In adults at histology, sarcomas were the most common (10%), followed by cancers of the hematopoietic and lymphatic organs (8.09%). Conclusion: Primary malignant bone cancers are rare in Ivory Coast. They most often affect male children with maxillofacial involvement and predominant lower extremity. Burkitt’s lymphoma and osteosarcoma are the often diagnosed histological types.展开更多

文摘A data-driven method was proposed to realistically animate garments on human poses in reduced space. The intersection artifacts are fast removed and final garment results are quite realistic.
文摘Background: Rapid urbanization and increasing fleet in low-income countries are the basis of the higher rate of trauma and fractures. Good governance would reduce the incidence of fractures of the limbs bones and their assessment.
文摘Brachydactyly is a general term that refers to disproportionately short fingers and toes and forms a part of the group of limb malformations characterized by bone dysostosis. The patient responded very well to surgical treatment.
文摘The use of computed microtomography (p.CT) has revolutionized many areas of research, such as noninvasive, fast and high precision techniques, which allows immediate visualization of internal structures without any risk to the object of study. ~tCT is widely accepted for medical diagnostics, is also important for purposes of zoological research and paleontological. The results obtained validate the use of μCT as a technique that allows the study of bone structures in small samples, enabling to explore the morphological differences between the bones of those species.
文摘Age of African pike Hepsetus odoe from Ado Ekiti Reservoir Ekiti State, Nigeria was studied. The mean lengths at the estimated ages obtained using both opercula bones and scales were not significantly different (P 〉 0.05, P 〉 0.01).
文摘Primary bones cancers are rare and ubiquitous malignant tumors. Burkitt’s lymphoma and osteosarcoma are the often diagnosed histological types.
文摘Background: An open fracture is an injury in which the fracture site and/or hematoma communicates with the external environment. It is associated with significant morbidity and disability and is a challenge to the surgical team. The lower extremities are the most often exposed to traumatic injuries compared to other anatomical parts of the body. Patterns of open fractures differ with different mechanisms of injury and the segment of the long bone affected. The correct and timely management of open fractures is beneficial to the patients and leads<span style="font-family:;" "=""> to a more favorable outcome.
