This paper tests the relationship between the reputation and the earnings quality. Through a partial correlation test and a regression test, I do find the evidence that the reputation is not only positively correlated with superior earnings quality, but also does have positive effect on superior earnings quality, as well as the superior total sales do in Chinese public companies.展开更多

The AHP technique can make the analysis studies more effective, easy, and applicable to companies to calculate the relative weights of each dimension, sub-dimension, and specific sub-dimension of earnings quality. A common understanding of earnings quality is difficult to define and even more difficult to measure precisely. In addition to this, the earnings quality is influenced by factors which are often intangible and immeasurable and, as such, when assessing earnings quality, judgments will be largely subjective. Further, earnings quality is related to business concepts or practices and affected by other factors such as the nature and source of earnings. In relation to this, earnings quality would be directly influenced by the conservatism of the chosen methods. However, earnings quality relates to the persistence of earnings and to the likelihood of cash realization on reported eamings. Overall, the results presented from the paramorphic model under AHP are meant to be descriptive of the decision process of five investment analysts within three different companies. The results in this study offer valuable insights into how a small population of investment analysts actually decides the relative importance of various earnings quality dimensions.展开更多

We find that relationships between earnings quality and new short-term loans, long-term loans and total loans in listed companies changed significantly after the banking system reform, especially in stateowned listed companies. Further investigation shows that due to the influence of rent-seeking, banks have eased the earnings requirements of non-stateowned listed companies. These findings enhance our understanding of the economic consequences of the banking system reform and of credit discrimination under the new regime.展开更多

Contrary to findings in developed markets, we document several novel results in China's stock market: (1) institutional holding negatively affects assets' liquidity, (2) earnings quality is negatively related with liquidity. Since earnings quality captures asymmetric information, low earnings quality induces high divergence in investor opinions and thus boosts market trading, and (3) interestingly, the effect of earnings quality on liquidity is greater if institutional investors' holding is at a high level. Overall, our findings cast doubt on the conventional wisdom that institutional investors and earnings quality improve market liquidity. The results are robust to different measures and alternative model specifications.展开更多

The results show that companies with higher earnings information have higher investment efficiency, and the quality of earnings information has increased investment efficiency by reducing the lack of investment and suppressing overinvestment. The companies with higher short-term debt ratio show higher investment efficiency. The results show that there is a certain substitution effect between the effect of earnings information quality and the maturity strueture of debt on the efficiency of investment.展开更多

Using downward earnings restatement firms to identify low-quality earnings, we find that insiders outsell non-earnings restatement firms of their holdings over the period from two years before to one year after the beginning of the restatement period. In addition, the amounts of restatement are positively associated with the excess insider selling. We also provide evidence that excess insider selling predicts excessive earnings manipulations that eventually lead to GAAP (Generally Accepted Accounting Principles) violation. Some researchers argued that insider trading can be an efficient way of transferring insider information to the capital markets. Our evidence of intensive insider selling in the context of earnings restatements implies that insiders disregard their fiduciary duties to the shareholders during the periods of deteriorating financial performance.展开更多

Since the ownership structure determines the method and the level of the corporate governance and the right of control, supervision, and the benefit, it can decide the quality of information and affect the earning quality. This paper examines if the ownership concentration affects the earning quality in family-owned companies in China. Using the data of 298 publicly-traded corporations in China, this paper finds that the controlling shareholders are associated with low earning quality and that the separation of control rights and cash flow rights is negatively associated with the earning quality of family ownership.展开更多

Mandatory audit partner rotation, however, limits the length of the client-partner relationship and can artificially increase or decrease the market shares of incoming and departing partners, thus making the audit partner's within-industry market share an unreliable proxy for auditor industry expertise. Using a sample of banks in Taiwan, we find that audit quality is positively related to an audit partner's within-industry market share in the voluntary audit partner rotation regime. However, such a positive relation disappears in the mandatory audit partner rotation regime. Thus, we conclude that mandatory audit partner rotation decouples the link between an audit partner's within-industry market share and auditor industry expertise and caution researchers against using an audit partner's within-industry market share as a proxy for auditor industry expertise in a mandatory audit partner rotation regime.展开更多
