Background:A variety of experimental animal models are used in basic ophthalmological research to elucidate physiological mechanisms of vision and disease pathogenesis.The choice of animal model is based on the measurability of specific parameters or structures,the applicability of clinical measurement technologies,and the similarity to human eye function.Studies of eye pathology usually compare optical parameters between a healthy and altered state,so accurate baseline assessments are critical,but few reports have comprehensively examined the normal anatomical structures and physiological functions in these models.Methods:Three cynomolgus monkeys,six New Zealand rabbits,ten Sprague Dawley(SD)rats,and BALB/c mice were examined by fundus photography(FP),fundus fluorescein angiography(FFA),and optical coherence tomography(OCT).Results:Most retinal structures of cynomolgus monkey were anatomically similar to the corresponding human structures as revealed by FP,FFA,and OCT.New Zealand rabbits have large eyeballs,but they have large optic disc and myelinated retinal nerve fibers in their retinas,and the growth pattern of retinal vessels were also different to the human retinas.Unlike monkeys and rabbits,the retinal vessels of SD rats and BALB/c mice were widely distributed and clear.The OCT performance of them were similar with human beings except the macular.Conclusions:Monkey is a good model to study changes in retinal structure associated with fundus disease,rabbits are not suitable for studies on retinal vessel diseases and optic nerve diseases,and rats and mice are good models for retinal vascular diseases.These measures will help guide the choice of model and measurement technology and reduce the number of experimental animals required. 展开更多

With the popularity and development of artificial intelligence(AI),disease screening systems based on AI algorithms are gradually emerging in the medical field.Such systems can be used for primary screening of diseases to relieve the pressure on primary health care.In recent years,AI algorithms have demonstrated good performance in the analysis and identification of lesion signs in the macular region of fundus color photography,and a screening system for fundus lesion signs applicable to primary screening is bound to emerge in the future.Therefore,to standardize the design and clinical application of macular region lesion sign screening systems based on AI algorithms,the Ocular Fundus Diseases Group of Chinese Ophthalmological Society,in collaboration with relevant experts,developed this guideline after investigating issues,discussing production evidence,and holding guideline workshops.It aimed to establish uniform standards for the definition of the macular region and lesion signs,AI adoption scenarios,algorithm model construction,dataset establishment and labeling,architecture and function design,and image data acquisition for the screening system to guide the implementation of the screening work. 展开更多

Evaluation of traumatic retinopathy with ultra-wide field imaging under corneal scar or fixed small pupil

AIM: To evaluate the value of ultra-wide field(UWF) imaging in the management of traumatic retinopathy under the condition of corneal scar or fixed small pupil after complicated ocular trauma. METHODS: Twenty-eight patients(28 eyes) with complicated ocular trauma were enrolled in the study from June 2016 to May 2017, including 19 males and 9 females with age ranged from 11 to 64(43.42±12.62)y. All patients were treated with secondary vitrectomy after emergency operation for wound repair of open ocular trauma. Direct ophthalmoscopy and 45-degree fundus photography were taken at each time point of follow up for comparison of findings with UWF images. Routine eye examination including visual acuity, intraocular pressure, slit lamp examination were performed and analyzed as well.RESULTS: Among the 28 traumatized eyes, the positive rate for identification of traumatic retinopathed was 32.1%(9 cases), 14.9%(5 cases), and 85.7%(24 cases) with direct ophthalmoscopy, 45-degree fundus photography, and UWF imaging, respectively. The detective rate of UWF imaging under the condition of corneal scar or fixed small pupil was statistically greater than that of 45-degree fundus photography and direct ophthalmoscopy(Bonferroni correction, P<0.001). UWF image was obtained in 19 eyes with opaque corneal scar, otherwise their fundus could not be seen by conventional methods. The additional findings of traumatic retinopathies by UWF imaging included periretinal membranes or pre-retinal proliferating strip, retinal holes, hemorrhage in the vitreous or sub-retinal space.CONCLUSION: UWF imaging is superior to traditional fundus photography in the evaluation of traumatic retinopathies under the condition of corneal scar or fixed small pupil after complicated ocular trauma. 展开更多

Factors associated with axial length elongation in high myopia in adults

AIM:To investigate the association of axial length(AL)and ocular factors on AL elongation.METHODS:A retrospective chart review of patients who underwent two or more AL examinations for more than two years.Totally 4 groups were divided according to initial AL(<24 mm,24-26 mm,26-28 mm,≥28 mm).Initial fundus photograph was used to find risk factors associated AL elongation.RESULTS:The mean age of the patients was 47.21±7.79 y.AL remained almost unchanged in the groups with AL<24 mm and 24≤AL<26 mm.On the contrary,AL increased by 0.011 mm/y in the group with 26≤AL<28 mm and 0.035 mm/y in the group with AL≥28 mm(P<0.001).In high myopia,AL elongation increased in eye with longer AL(r=0.003,P=0.024),female gender(r=0.014,P=0.019),eye with larger peripapillary chorioretinal atrophic area(r=0.002,P=0.019),and smaller vascular arcade angle(r=-0.004,P=0.006).The risk of elongation 0.03 mm/y in high myopia was increased in female gender(P=0.040),and gradually increased in eye with large peripapillary chorioretinal atrophy area(P<0.01).CONCLUSION:AL elongate significantly in the eye with longer AL,female gender,and the eye with larger atrophic area and smaller arcade angle on fundus photography. 展开更多

BACKGROUND Lipemia retinalis(LR)is a rare disease related to hypertriglyceridemia.However,the symptoms of hypertriglyceridemia are insidious and difficult to detect without blood tests.The fundus is the only site where blood vessels can be observed directly.Understanding the specific performance of LR in multimodal imaging fundus examinations can help diagnose more patients with abnormal hyperlipidemia.CASE SUMMARY A 29-year-old woman with type 2 diabetes presented to our clinic complaining of a six-day loss of visual acuity in the left eye.The fundus color images showed typical LR:Arteries and veins were the same pink-white color.Infrared images showed hyperinfrared reflections of the arteries and veins.Optical coherence tomography(OCT)showed numerous high point-like reflections in the retinal section,corresponding to different calibers of blood vessel sections.Medium reflections were seen in the big vessels of the choroid.Fundus fluorescein angiography(FFA)and optical coherence tomography angiography(OCTA)showed no significant changes.Laboratory examination found a total cholesterol level of 13.98 mmol/L,triglyceride 20.55 mmol/L,which confirmed the diagnosis of LR.After treatment to lower blood lipids and control blood glucose,the fundus imaging showed that the blood lipids in the patient had returned to normal.CONCLUSION LR shows specific changes in fundus color photography,infrared photography,and OCT.FFA and OCTA were not sensitive to LR changes. 展开更多
