In the paper, monodisperse particles of silica/polystyrene (PS) are prepared with both dispersion and emulsion polymerization techniques. The monodisperse silicon dioxide particles are first prepared with the seed growth method and modified by the coupling agents. Silica is properly modified with KH-570, and its size deviation is 3.0% or so. The modified silica then reacts with the mixture of ethanol, water medium, and monomer of styrene under dispersion polymerization. Results show that the dispersion polymerization technique is more suitable for monodisperse core-shell SiO2/PS particles than that of the emulsion. The morphology and molecular structure of the core-shell particles are investigated with the transmission electron microscope (TEM), and fourier transform infra-red spectroscopy (FTIR). The results show that the modified silica particles are successfully encapsulated with polystyrene. The average number of silica particles encapsulated into each polystyrene sphere decreases when the size of silica particles increases from 50 nm to 600 nm, and will approach one when the silica is greater than 380nm in size. The mass ratio for silica/PS particles in emulsion polymerization is 4.7/1, lower than that of 6.8/1 for dispersion polymerization, which is the first reported optimized data for preparing the similar monodisperse composite particles. Thus, the PS shell in the former is thinner than that in the latter.展开更多

The molten-state annealing results indicate that the phase structure with core-shell dispersed particles is unstable and could be completely destroyed by static annealing, resulting in the degradation of impact strength. By using a co-rotating twin screw extruder, we found that the dispersed particle with core-shell structure could be rebuilt in appropriate condition with the recovery of excellent impact strength due to both the huge interfacial tension during solidification and the great difference in viscosity of components. Results reveal that almost all the extruded IPCs show the impact strength 60%-90% higher than that of annealed IPCs at room temperature. And the twice-extruded IPC shows the highest impact strength, 446% higher than that of IPC annealed for 30 min. As for low temperature tests, the impact strength of extruded IPCs also increases by 33%-58%. According to adjusting the processing conditions including extrusion speed, extrusion frequency and temperature, an optimization of toughness was well established.展开更多

The anionic potassium persulfate was used as initiator, and acrylic acid as functional comonomer. It was shown that the weight ratio of the PNIPAM shell to the PMMA core can be greatly increased through continuous addition of NIPAM monomer at a relatively slow rate. PMMA/PNIPAM particles with different shell thickness were obtained by varying the amount of charged NIPAM monomers. These particles exhibited unique nonspherical core-shell morphology. PMMA core was partially coated by dense hair-like or antler-like PNIPAM shell depending on the shell thickness. The measurement of these particles' zeta potential at different temperatures showed that the absolute value of zeta potential unusually decreased as the particle size decreased with temperature.展开更多

To accomplish this, methyl methacrylate(MMA) was used as both the oil phase and solvent to dissolve a polymerizable PEGbased macromolecular surfactant, instead of traditional surfactant, and the photo-initiator. Janus particles can be easily obtained by off-chip UV polymerization due to polymerization induced phase separation between PEG and the formed poly(methyl methacrylate). At the same time, core-shell particles can also be easily attained by inverting the original collecting tube several times and then exposing to UV light. These results may extend the scope of microfluidic technology and the studies on polymerization induced self-assembly/phase-separation into easy fabrication of various new functional materials.展开更多

文摘Natural aluminum particles have the core-shell structure. The structure response refers to the mechanical behavior of the aluminum particle structure caused by external influences. The dynamic behavior of the structural response of aluminum core-shell particles before combustion is of great importance for the aluminum powder burning mechanism and its applications. In this paper,an aluminum particle combustion experiment in a detonation environment is conducted and analyzed;the breakage factors of aluminum particles shell in detonation environment are analyzed. The experiment results show that the aluminum particle burns in a gaseous state and condenses into a sub-micron particle cluster. The calculation and simulation demonstrate that the rupture of aluminum particle shell in the detonation environment is mainly caused by the impact of the detonation wave. The detonation wave impacts the aluminum particles, resulting in shell cracking, and due to the shrinkage-expansion of the aluminum core and stripping of the detonation product, the cracked shell is fractured and peeled with the aluminum reacting with the detonation product.
文摘A new kind of inelastomer impact modifier with a coreshell structure was synthesized by employing a multistep composite emulsion polymerization technique, the size and morphology structure of the coreshell particles could be controlled by the multistep composite emulsion polymerization technique. The study of the impact strength and the elongation at break of the PVC/CPE blend with different contents of coreshell particles(CS) indicated that the mechanical properties of PVC/CPE/CS composite were the best when the concentration of the particle was 25%(mass fraction) which showed the different regularities and characteristics of elastomer toughening plastic.
文摘The PAn-PEO-PAn triblock copolymer with the PEG chain length of 400 was synthesized by chemical oxidation copolymerization of aniline and α,ω-bis(p-aminophenyl)poly(ethylene glycol)and characterized by FT-IR and TEM.The experimental results show that the copolymer particles are of μtypical core-shell structure after the self-assembly process in water. Its conductivity is much lower than that of the pure PAn.The suspension containing 20 vol% PAn-PEO-PAn tiblock copolymer in silicone oil exhibits.a typical electrorheological (ER) effect in DC electric field.while it shows a lower leakage current density than that of the pure PAn-based ER fluids. Therefore, the PEO shell hinders the electric hop among PANI chains and decreases the current density of ER fluids in an external electric field.at the same time the interface polarity improves the ER effects.
文摘Fe3O4/P (NaUA-St-BA) core-shell composite micro spheres were in situ prepared by soapless polymerization of styrene and butyl acrylate, with Fe3O4magnetic colloidal particles coated with NaUA. The results of IR and XRD analysis demonstrated that the desired polymer chains have been covalently bonded to the surface of Fe3O4 nano particles. The morphology analysis by TEM confirmed that the composite particles have the core-shell structure and a relatively uniform diameter of about 100nm. The magnetic properties of the obtained composite latex particles were measured by VSM and found that they exhibited super paramagnetic properties. Finally, the prepared magnetic composite particles latex is stable for several months.

文摘The Tibetan Plateau, known as the“Third Pole”,is currently in a state of perturbation caused by intensified human activity. In this study,56 samples were obtained at the five sampling sites in typical area of Lhasa city and their physical and chemical properties were investigated by TEM/EDS,STXM,and NEXAFS spectroscopy. After careful examination of 3387single particles, the results showed that Fe should be one of the most frequent metal elements. The Fe-containing single particles in irregular shape and micrometer size was about7.8%and might be mainly from local sources.Meanwhile, the Fe was located on the subsurface of single particles and might be existed in the form of iron oxide.Interestingly, the core-shell structure of iron-containing particles were about 38.8%and might be present as single-,dual-or triple-core shell structure and multi-core shell structure with the Fe/Si ratios of 17.5,10.5,2.9 and 1.2,respectively.Meanwhile,iron and manganese were found to coexist with identical distributions in the single particles, which might induce a synergistic effect between iron and manganese in catalytic oxidation. Finally, the solid spherical structure of Fe-containing particles without an external layer were about 53.4%.The elements of Fe and Mn were co-existed,and might be presented as iron oxide-manganese oxide-silica composite. Moreover, the ferrous and ferric forms of iron might be co-existed.Such information can be valuable in expanding our understanding of Fe-containing particles in the Tibetan Plateau atmosphere.

文摘We reported an approach to reconstruct the complex phase morphology of impact polypropylene copolymer (IPC) with core-shell dispersed particles and to optimize its toughness in approximate shear condition. According to adjusting the processing conditions including extrusion speed, extrusion frequency and temperature, an optimization of toughness was well established.

文摘Poly(methyl methacrylate)/poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PMMA/PNIPAM) core-shell particles were synthesized by seeded precipitation polymerization of N-isopropylacrylamide (NIPAM) in the presence of PMMA seed particles. The measurement of these particles' zeta potential at different temperatures showed that the absolute value of zeta potential unusually decreased as the particle size decreased with temperature.

文摘Designer biosurfactants can be used to stabilise and functionalise interfaces. One particularly promising use is the stabilisation of oil-in-water emulsions, enabling fine tuning physical, chemical and biological surface properties. The ability of emulsion systems to carry high payloads makes them attractive for applications in medicine, food and fragrances, and cosmetics. However, they have limited long-term stability. Here we sought to use the metal ion-chelating ability of the biosurfactant peptide,AM1,to precipitate the formation of a gold metal shell on AM1-stabilised emulsions by electroless plating. We found that replacing the commonly used zinc(Ⅱ)with palladium(Ⅱ)for coordination by histidine residues of adjacent AM1 peptides produced interfacial films that maintained elasticity at acidic pH.Proton NMR suggested a coordination mechanism independent of the imidazole ring of the histidines.Nevertheless.stabilisation of emulsions at low pH enabled the deposition of a gold shell, albeit by an unexpected mechanism. We propose that gold nanoparticles forming in bulk are adsorbed onto the peptide-stabilised interface, accumulating into a particulate coating. The resulting one-step method for nanoparticle precipitation and shell formation will be useful for the creation of biocompatible core-shell particles for applications where large payloads of hydrophobic active compounds require stability over long time periods.

文摘In this work, we describe a straightforward approach to produce monodisperse Janus and core-shell particles by using organic solvent free single emulsion droplet-based microfluidic device combining with off-chip polymerization. These results may extend the scope of microfluidic technology and the studies on polymerization induced self-assembly/phase-separation into easy fabrication of various new functional materials.

文摘We describe the development of a T-mixer based continuous flow process for the coating of 86-500 nm diameter spherical polystyrene particles with thin gold patches by heterogeneous nucleation and growth. After establishing a suitable flow rate for good mixing and sufficiently uniform product morphology we systematically investigate the main reaction parameters. This reveals a considerable tunability of the patch morphology and,by virtue of the localized surface plasmon resonance of gold, the optical properties of the product dispersions. In order to further widen the range of nanostructures accessible by our process,a second T-mixer was added. This introduced new gold precursor, leading to further growth of the patches that were formed after the first mixer.By this approach,nearly-complete gold nanoshells could be produced in high yield on both small and large core particles, without the unwanted production of free-standing gold nanoparticles.Due to the pronounced optical properties of nearly-complete gold nanoshells on small core particles,we could estimate from electrodynamic sim-ulations the equivalent shell thickness to be as low as 8.6 nm.This is significantly thinner than can be routinely achieved using the standard seeded growth approach to synthesise gold nanoshells. Our results are therefore highly promising for the gram-scale synthesis of plasmon resonant nanostructures with designed optical properties.
