Statins have been shown to be effective in reducing cardiovascular events.Their magnitude of benefits has been proportionate to the reduction in low-density lipoprotein cholesterol(LDL-c).Intensive lipid-lowering therapies using ezetimibe and more recently proprotein convertase subtilisin kexin 9 inhibitors have further improved clinical outcomes.Unselective application of these treatments is undesirable and unaffordable and, therefore, has been guided by LDL-c level.Nonetheless, the residual risk in the post-statin era is markedly heterogeneous, including thrombosis and inflammation risks. Moreover, the lipoprotein related risk is increasingly recognised to be related to other non-LDL-c markers such as Lp(a).Emerging data show that intensive lipid-lowering therapy produce larger absolute risk reduction in patients with polyvascular disease, post coronary artery bypass graft and diabetes.Notably, these clinical entities share similar phenotype of large burden of atherosclerotic plaques.Novel plaque imaging may aid decision making by identifying patients with propensity to develop lipid rich plagues at multi-vascular sites. Those patients may be suitable candidates for intensive lipid lowering treatment. 展开更多

Background The correlation among the ratios of low-density lipoprotein cholesterol/high-density lipoprotein cholesterol(LDL-C/HDL-C), total cholesterol/high-density lipoprotein cholesterol(TC/HDL-C) and thin-cap fibroatheroma has not yet been established. Methods It was a single center, retrospective observational study. In total, we recruited 421 patients(82.4% men;mean age 65.73 ± 10.44 years) with one culprit vessel which determined by intravascular optical coherence tomography(OCT). The thinnest-capped fibroatheroma(TCFA) group was defined as lipid contents in > 2 quadrants, with the thinnest fibrous cap measuring less than 65 μm. Univariate and multivariate logistic regression were carried out to explore the relationship between lipoprotein ratios, TCFA and other characteristics of plaque. To compare different ratios, the area under curve(AUC) of receiver-operating characteristic(ROC) curve was assessed. Results OCT was performed in 421 patients(TCFA group(n = 109), non-TCFA group(n = 312)). LDL-C/HDL-C in the TCFA group was significantly higher than in the non-TCFA group(2.95 ± 1.20 vs. 2.43 ± 0.92, P < 0.05), as was TC/LDL in TCFA and non-TCFA group(4.57 ± 1.58 vs. 4.04 ± 1.13, P < 0.05). Both LDL-C/HDL-C(OR: 1.002(1.002-1.003), P < 0.05) and TC/HDL-C(OR: 1.001(1.001-1.004), P < 0.05) were considered independent factors for the prediction of TCFA according to the logistic regression. Based on the AUC comparison, LDL-C/HDL-C and TC/HDL-C had no significant difference statistically(LDL-C/HDL-C AUC: 0.63;TC/HDL-C AUC: 0.61;P = 0.10) for the prediction of TCFA. Conclusions LDL-C/HDL-C and TC/HDL-C could be the independent factors for predicting the presence of TCFA, indicating coronary plaque vulnerability in CAD patients. Moreover, TC/HDL-C also showed a comparative performance for the prediction of TCFA as LDL-C/HDL-C. 展开更多

OBJECTIVE To investigate the associations between the blood concentrations of low-density lipoprotein cholesterol(LDL-C)and the clinical features of haemorrhagic stroke.METHODS This study analysed the data from patients with acute haemorrhagic stroke at a comprehensive stroke centre from 2013 to 2018.Patients were stratified into three groups according to their baseline LDL-C levels:<70,70 to<100 and≥100 mg/dL.We used multivariate logistic regression models to analyse the associations between LDL-C and the risks of having severe neurological deficits(National Institute Health Stroke Scale[NIHSS]scores≥15)and unfavourable outcomes(modified Rankin Scale[mRS]scores>2)at discharge.RESULTS Six-hundred and six patients were analysed.Their median age was 58 years.Among the patients,75(12%)patients had LDL-C levels<70 mg/dL,194(32%)patients had LDL-C levels between 70 to<100 mg/dL and the other 337(56%)patients had LDL-C levels≥100 mg/dL.Patients with higher LDL-C levels were less likely to suffer severe neurological deficits(LDL-C:70 to<100 vs.<70 mg/dL,adjusted odds ratio[OR]:0.29,95%CI:0.15–0.57;LDL-C:≥100 vs.<70 mg/dL,adjusted OR=0.27,95%CI:0.15–0.51)and to have unfavourable outcomes at discharge(LDL-C:70 to<100 vs.<70 mg/dL,adjusted OR=0.50,95%CI:0.29–0.87 and LDL-C:≥100 vs.<70 mg/dL,adjusted OR=0.46,95%CI:0.28–0.78).CONCLUSIONS An LDL-C level<70 mg/dL was independently associated with severe neurological deficits of haemorrhagic stroke and may increase the risks of unfavourable outcomes at discharge. 展开更多

Background:The association and its population heterogeneities between low-density lipoprotein cholesterol(LDL-C)and all-cause and cardiovascular mortality remain unknown. We aimed to examine the dose-dependent associations of LDL-C levels with specific types of cardiovascular disease(CVD)mortality and heterogeneities in the associations among different population subgroups. Methods:A total of 2,968,462 participants aged 35-75 years from China Health Evaluation And risk Reduction through nationwide Teamwork(ChinaHEART)(2014-2019)were included.Cox proportional hazard models and Fine-Gray subdistribution hazard models were used to estimate associations between LDL-C categories(<70.0,70.0-99.9,100.0-129.9[reference group],130.0-159.9,160.0-189.9,and≥190.0 mg/dL)and all-cause and cause-specific mortality. Results:During a median follow-up of 3.7 years,57,391 and 23,241 deaths from all-cause and overall CVD were documented. We observed J-shaped associations between LDL-C and death from all-cause,overall CVD,coronary heart disease(CHD),and ischemic stroke, and an L-shaped association between LDL-C and hemorrhagic stroke(HS)mortality(P for non-linearity<0.001).Compared with the reference group(100.0-129.9 mg/dL),very low LDL-C levels(<70.0 mg/dL)were significantly associated with increased risk of overall CVD(hazard ratio[HR]:1.10,95%confidence interval[CI]:1.06-1.14)and HS mortality(HR:1.37,95%CI:1.29-1.45).Very high LDL-C levels(≥190.0 mg/dL)were associated with increased risk of overall CVD(HR:1.51,95%CI:1.40-1.62)and CHD mortality(HR:2.08,95%CI:1.92-2.24).The stronger associations of very low LDL-C with risk of CVD mortality were observed in individuals with older age,low or normal body mass index, low or moderate 10-year atherosclerotic CVD risk, and those without diagnosed CVD or taking statins.Stronger associations between very high LDL-C levels and all-cause and CVD mortality were observed in younger people. Conclusions:People with very low LDL-C had a higher risk of all-cause,CVD,and HS mortality;those with very high LDL-C had a higher risk of all-cause,CVD,and CHD mortality. On the basis of our findings, comprehensive health assessment is needed to evaluate cardiovascular risk and implement appropriate lipid-lowering therapy for people with very low LDL-C. 展开更多

Low-density lipoprotein receptor-related protein 2(LRP2)is a multifunctional endocytic receptor expressed in epithelial cells. In mammals,it acts as an endocytic receptor that mediates the cellular uptake of cholesterol-containing apolipoproteins to maintain lipid homeostasis. However, little is known about the role of LRP2 in lipid homeostasis in insects. In the present study,we investigated the function of LRP2 in the migratory locust Locusta migratoria(LmLRP2).The mRNA of LmLRP2 is widely distributed in various tissues, including integument, wing pads, foregut, midgut, hindgut,Malpighian tubules and fat body, and the amounts of LmLRP2 transcripts decreased gradually in the early stages and then increased in the late stages before ecdysis during the nymphal developmental stage.Fluorescence immunohistochemistry revealed that the LmLRP2 protein is mainly located in cellular membranes of the midgut and hindgut.Using RNAi to silence LmLRP2 caused molting defects in nymphs(more than 60%),and the neutral lipid was found to accumulate in the midgut and surface of the integument, but not in the fat body,of dsLmLRP2-treated nymphs. The results of a lipidomics analysis showed that the main components of lipids(diglyceride and triglyceride)were significantly increased in the midgut, but decreased in the fat body and hemolymph.Furthermore, the content of total triglyceride was significantly increased in the midgut, but markedly decreased in the fat body and hemolymph in dsLmLRP2-injected nymphs. Our results indicate that LmLRP2 is located in the cellular membranes of midgut cells, and is required for lipid export from the midgut to the hemolymphand fat body in locusts. 展开更多

Neurotoxic astrocytes are a promising therapeutic target for the attenuation of cerebral ischemia/reperfusion injury.Low-density lipoprotein receptor,a classic cholesterol regulatory receptor, has been found to inhibit NLR family pyrin domain containing protein 3(NLRP3)inflammasome activation in neurons following ischemic stroke and to suppress the activation of microglia and astrocytes in individuals with Alzheimer’s disease. However, little is known about the effects of low-density lipoprotein receptor on astrocytic activation in ischemic stroke. To address this issue in the present study,we examined the mechanisms by which low-density lipoprotein receptor regulates astrocytic polarization in ischemic stroke models.First,we examined low-density lipoprotein receptor expression in astrocytes via immunofluorescence staining and western blotting analysis. We observed significant downregulation of low-density lipoprotein receptor following middle cerebral artery occlusion reperfusion and oxygen-glucose deprivation/reoxygenation.Second,we induced the astrocyte-specific overexpression of low-density lipoprotein receptor using astrocyte-specific adeno-associated virus.Low-density lipoprotein receptor overexpression in astrocytes improved neurological outcomes in middle cerebral artery occlusion mice and reversed neurotoxic astrocytes to create a neuroprotective phenotype. Finally,we found that the overexpression of low-density lipoprotein receptor inhibited NLRP3 inflammasome activation in oxygen-glucose deprivation/reoxygenation injured astrocytes and that the addition of nigericin,an NLRP3 agonist, restored the neurotoxic astrocyte phenotype. These findings suggest that low-density lipoprotein receptor could inhibit the NLRP3-meidiated neurotoxic polarization of astrocytes and that increasing low-density lipoprotein receptor in astrocytes might represent a novel strategy for treating cerebral ischemic stroke. 展开更多

Background:Comprehensive management of diabetes should include management of its comorbid conditions, especially cardiovascular complications, which are the leading cause of morbidity and mortality among patients with diabetes.Dyslipidemia is a comorbid condition of diabetes and a risk factor for cardiovascular complications. Therefore, lipid level management is a key of managing patients with diabetes successfully. However,it is not clear that how well dyslipidemia is managed in patients with diabetes in local Chinese health-care communities. This study aimed to assess how well low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) was managed in Nanjing community hospitals,China. Methods:We reviewed clinical records of 7364 diabetic patients who were treated in eleven community hospitals in Nanjing from October 2005 to October 2014.Information regarding LDL-C level, cardiovascular risk factors, and use of lipid-lowering agents were collected. Results:In patients without history of cardiovascular disease (CVD),92.1% had one or more CVD risk factors, and the most common CVD risk factor was dyslipidemia. The overall average LDL-C level was 2.80 ± 0.88 mmol/L,which was 2.62 ± 0.90 mmol/L and 2.82 ± 0.87 mmol/L in patients with and without CVD history respectively.Only 38% of all patients met the target goal and 37.3% of patients who took lipid-lowering agents met target goal.Overall,24.5% of all patients were on lipid-lowering medication, and 36.3% of patients with a CVD history and 20.9% of patients without CVD history took statins for LDL-C management. The mean statin dosage was 13.9 ± 8.9 mg.Conclusions:Only a small portion of patients achieved target LDL-C level, and the rate of using statins to control LDL-C was low.Managing LDL-C with statins in patients with diabetes should be promoted, especially in patients without a CVD history and with one or more CVD risk factors. 展开更多

The relationship between low levels of serum low-density lipoprotein cholesterol(LDL-C)and subsequent cognitive decline remains unclear. The present study aimed to evaluate the longitudinal association between low LDL-C levels and cognition decline in the context of the current aggressive guideline-recommended targets(LDL-C levels less than 55 mg/dL for individuals at very high risk of cardiovascular events, and less than 70 mg/dL for high risk individuals).Data from wave 13(2016)to wave 14(2018)of the Health and Retirement Study(HRS)were utilized.LDL-C concentrations measured at wave 13 were categorized into 5 levels, reflecting currently recommended values for lipid lowering treatment.Of 7129 included participants(mean age:69.0±9.9 years,60.3%female),we found that compared to participants with LDL-C levels of 70.0-99.9 mg/dL,those with LDL-C levels of<55 mg/dL had significantly slower 2-year decline rates in global cognitive function(0.244 point/year;95%confidence interval(CI):0.065-0.422;P=0.008),working memory(0.068 point/year;95%CI:0.004-0.133;P=0.038),and borderline significantly in episodic memory(0.155 point/year;95%CI:-0.004-0.315;P=0.057).Similarly,significantly slower decline rates were observed in those with LDL-C levels of 55.0-69.9 mg/dL.The present study demonstrated that compared with LDL-C levels 70.0-99.9 mg/dL,low LDL-C levels(<70 mg/dL,especially<55 mg/dL)were associated with significantly slower cognitive decline in population-based setting.Future randomized controlled trials are warranted to ascertain the safety and benefit of current aggressive guideline-recommended targets on cognitive function. 展开更多

Background Genetic factors account for approximately 50% of the individual variation in plasma low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) concentrations in the general population. Several candidate genes have been proposed but their relative contributions to the variance in LDL-C are not known, except for apolipoprotein E (apoE). We report here an investigation of the relationship between LDL-C and cholesterol 7α-hydroxylase (CYP7), as well as apoE and low-density lipoprotein receptor (LDLR), three pivotal genes in LDL metabolism. Methods Our study population included more than 200 nuclear families with increased coronary heart disease (CHD) risk from the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) Family Heart Study. Variance-component linkage methods, a measured genotype approach, and a variance-component linkage analysis conditional on a measured genotype association were used. Results The results showed significant linkage between a genetic determinant of plasma LDL-C concentrations and a polymorphism near CYP7 with its allelic variation accounting for 27% of the total LDL-C variation. There is significant association between plasma LDL-C concentrations and apoE genotypes. Conditional on the apoE association, the total LDL-C variation accounted by allelic variation of a polymorphism near CYP7 was increased significantly. Conclusion Our results suggest the apoE and CYP7 may be two important genes accounting for the genetic variation of plasma LDL-C concentrations in a population with cardiovascular diseases. 展开更多

BACKGROUND Dyslipidemia and type 2 diabetes mellitus(T2DM)are chronic conditions with substantial public health implications.Effective management of lipid metabolism in patients with T2DM is critical. However, there has been insufficient attention given to the relationship between thyroid hormone sensitivity and dyslipidemia in the T2DM population, particularly concerning non-high-density lipoprotein cholesterol(non-HDL-C).AIM To clarify the association between thyroid hormone sensitivity and dyslipidemia in patients with T2DM.METHODS In this cross-sectional study, thyroid hormone sensitivity indices, the thyroid feedback quantile-based index(TFQI),the thyroid-stimulating hormone index(TSHI),the thyrotrophic T4 resistance index(TT4RI),and the free triiodothyronine(FT3)/free thyroxine(FT4)ratio were calculated.Logistic regression analysis was performed to determine the associations between those composite indices and non-HDL-C levels.Random forest variable importance and Shapley Additive Explanations(SHAP)summary plots were used to identify the strength and direction of the association between hyper-non-HDL-C and its major predictor.RESULTS Among the 994 participants,389(39.13%)had high non-HDL-C levels.Logistic regression analysis revealed that the risk of hyper-non-HDL-C was positively correlated with the TFQI(OR:1.584;95%CI:1.088-2.304;P=0.016),TSHI(OR:1.238;95%CI:1.034-1.482;P=0.02),and TT4RI(OR:1.075;95%CI:1.006-1.149;P=0.032)but was not significantly correlated with the FT3/FT4 ratio. The relationships between composite indices of the thyroid system and non-HDL-C levels differed according to sex.An increased risk of hyper-non-HDL-C was associated with elevated TSHI levels in men(OR:1.331;95%CI:1.003-1.766;P=0.048)but elevated TFQI levels in women(OR:2.337;95%CI:1.4-3.901;P=0.001).Among the analyzed variables, the average SHAP values were highest for TSHI,followed by TT4RI.CONCLUSION Impaired sensitivity to thyroid hormones was associated with high non-HDL-C levels in patients with T2DM. 展开更多

Background:Helicobacter pylori(HP)is associated with several gastrointestinal diseases, including peptic ulcer diseases and gastric cancer, and non-gastrointestinal diseases such as hypertension and Alzheimer's disease. However, the relationship between HP and lipid metabolism and atherosclerosis remains unclear. This study aims to investigate the association between H.pylori infection and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels and pulse wave conduction velocity. Methods:This is a report of a cross-sectional study that collected data from 2,827 participants. The data collected included results of life questionnaires, laboratory tests,13C-urea breath test(13C-UBT),and pulse wave conduction velocity test.Based on the results of the 13C-UBT test, the subjects were divided into two groups:the HP-uninfected group(HP−)and the HP-infected group(HP+).The study compared the differences in HDL-C levels and brachial-ankle pulse wave velocity(baPWV)between the two groups.One-way regression analysis was used to identify potential factors affecting HDL-C levels in the study population.Multiple regression equations were presented to analyze whether HP infection was an independent risk factor for abnormal HDL-C metabolism in the population. Results:Univariate analysis demonstrated that high-density lipoprotein cholesterol(HDL-C)levels were significantly lower in the HP+group compared to the HP−group, with a mean difference ofβ=−18.1 mg/dl(95%CI:−19.3 to−17.0,P<0.001).After adjusting for all variables, the HDL-C levels remained lower in the HP+group compared to the HP-group,with a mean difference ofβ=−17.4 mg/dl(95%CI:−18.2 to−16.7,P<0.001).These findings suggest that H.pylori infection is independently associated with abnormal HDL-C metabolism.Additionally,brachial-ankle pulse wave velocity(baPWV)was higher in the HP+group than in the HP−group on both sides. On the right side, the baPWV was 1,713.4±231.4 cm/s in the HP+group compared to 1,542.8±237.5 cm/s in the HP−group(t=−18.30,P<0.001).On the left side, the baPWV was 1,743.7±238.8 cm/s in the HP+group compared to 1,562.8±256.3 cm/s in the HP−group(t=−18.23,P<0.001).These results indicate a significant association between H.pylori infection and increased arterial stiffness,as measured by baPWV.Conclusion:Helicobacter pylori infection is associated with a decrease in high-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels and an increase in pulse wave conduction velocity. 展开更多

Low-density lipoprotein(LDL)is the main carrier of cholesterol and cholesteryl ester in circulation.High plasma levels of LDL cholesterol(LDL-C)are a major risk factor of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease(ASCVD).LDL-C lowering is recommended by many guidelines for the prevention and treatment of ASCVD.Statins, ezetimibe, and proprotein convertase subtilisin/kexin type 9 inhibitors are the mainstay of LDL-C-lowering therapy.Novel therapies are also emerging for patients who are intolerant to statins or respond poorly to standard treatments. Here,we review the most recent advances on LDL-C-lowering drugs, focusing on the mechanisms by which they act to reduce LDL-C levels. The article starts with the cornerstone therapies applicable to most patients at risk for ASCVD.Special treatments for those with little or no LDL receptor function then follow. The inhibitors of ATP-citrate lyase and cholesteryl ester transfer protein, which are recently approved and still under investigation for LDL-C lowering, respectively, are also included.Strategies targeting the stability of 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl-coenzyme A reductase and cholesterol catabolism can be novel regimens to reduce LDL-C levels and cardiovascular risk. 展开更多

Patients with coronary artery disease (CAD), after first percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI), often need repeat unplanned percutaneous revascularization due to plaque progression in culprit or non-culprit lesions, including target lesion revascularization (TLR), target vessel revascularization (TVR), and other vessel revascularization (OVR).[1] Low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) levels are controllable and its reduction is integral to reducing major adverse cardiac events after PCI. In this study, active lipid-lowering therapy was widely appreciated early after coronary stenting, showing an initial decline in levels of LDL-C, while its emphasis and recognition was attenuated over time with an increased risk of revascularization due to higher levels of LDL-C. 展开更多

To the Editor:Asialoglycoprotein receptor 1(ASGR1)is the major subunit of ASGR,it is predominantly expressed by liver parenchymal cells and relatively lower expression was found in peripheral blood monocytes.[1]A genetic study recently revealed that ASGR1 haploinsufficiency resulted from loss-of-function(LOF)variants was strongly associated with the pronounced reductions in serum total cholesterol(TC)and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol(LDL-C)levels,[2,3]suggesting that ASGR1 may play a key role in cholesterol metabolism. However, the function of ASGR1 remains largely unclear. This study was focused on the association of ASGR1 gene expression in monocytes and plasma cholesterol level. 展开更多

Aim To study the effect of Isorhapontigenin (Iso) on copper-mediatedperoxidation of human low-density lipoprotein (LDL) and on the toxicity of oxidized LDL (ox-LDL) tomouse macrophages in vitro. Methods Human LDL from sera df normal lipidemic donors was separated bysequential ultracentrifugation. The separated human IDL 1 mg·mL^(-1) in phosphate buffer saline, pH7.4, was incubated with cupric sulfate (10 μmol·L^(-1) ) at 37℃ for 10 h in the presence orabsence of various concentrations of Iso. Malondialdehyde (MDA) formation, vitamin E consumption, electrophoretic mobility of LDL, mitochondria] membrane potential of mouse peritoneal macrophages, phagocytosis of neutral red, and release of nitric oxide (NO) from macrophages were determined byvarious methods. Results Iso 1 - 100 μmol·L^(-1) significantly inhibited the increase of MDAformation, vitamin E consumption and electrophoretic mobility of LDL induced by Cu^(2+) in aconcentration-dependent manner. The injury of the mitochondrial membrane potential of mouseperitoneal macrophages due to incubation with ox-LDL (0.1 mg·mL^(-1)) at 37℃ for 12 h was markedlyprotected by 10 μmol·L^(-1) Iso. After pretreat-ment of the macrophages with 10 μmol · L^(-1)of Iso and then exposure to ox-LDL for 4 h, the reduction of phagocytosis of neutral red and releaseof NO in response to lipopolysaccharide (IPS) stimulation were significantly prevented. ConclusionIso has protective action against Cu^(2+) - mediated LDL peroxidation and ox-LDL induced toxicity tomacrophages in vitro. 展开更多

Objective PERK/elF2/CHOP is a major signaling pathway mediating endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress related with atherosclerosis. Oxidized LDL (ox-LDL) also induces endothelial apoptosis and plays a vital role in the initiation and progression of atherosclerosis. The present study was conducted to explore the regulatory effect of ox-LDL on PERK/elF2a/CHOP signaling pathway in vascular endothelial cells. Methods The effects of ox-LDL on PERK and p-elF2a protein expression of primary human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs) were investigated by Western blot analysis. PERK gene silencing and selective elF2a phosphatase inhibitor, salubrinal were used to inhibit the process of ox-LDL induced endothelial cell apoptosis, caspase-3 activity, and CHOP mRNA level. Results Ox-LDL treatment significantly increased the expression of PERK, PERK-mediated inactivation of elF2a phosphorylation, and the expression of CHOP, as well as the caspase-3 activity and apoptosis. The effects of ox-LDL were markedly decreased by knocking down PERK with stable transduction of lentiviral shRNA or by selective elF2a phosphatase inhibitor, salubrinal. Conclusion This study provides the first evidence that ox-LDL induces apoptosis in vascular endothelial cells mediated largely via the PERK/elF2a/CHOP ER-stress pathway. It adds new insights into the molecular mechanisms underlying the pathogenesis and progression of atherosclerosis. 展开更多

Low-density lipoprotein (LDL) extracted from hen egg yolk has recently been considered to be superior to whole egg yolk in sperm cryopreservation of various animal species. Meanwhile, there was a notion that high-density lipoprotein (HDL) in egg yolk may have a negative effect on post-thaw survival. The role of LDL and HDL in sperm cryopreservation of rhesus monkeys has not been explored. The present study evaluates their effect in comparison with egg yolk with or without the addition of permeable cryoprotectant (glycerol) on sperm cryopreservation of rhesus macaques. In addition, various additives intended to change the lipid composition of LDL-sperm membrane complex have also been tested for their effectiveness in preserving post-thaw viability. Our findings indicated that LDL is the main component in egg yolk that is responsible for its protective role for sperm cryopreservation in rhesus monkeys. Regardless of the presence or absence of glycerol, the protective role of LDL is similar to that of egg yolk and we did not observe any superiority in post-thaw survival with LDL when compared to egg yolk. Modifying the lipid composition of LDL-sperm membrane complex with the addition of cholesterol, cholesterol loaded cyclodextrin and phosphatidylcholine also did not yield any improvements in pest-thaw survival; while addition of methyl-β-cyclodextrin reduced post-thaw motility. HDL plays a neutral role in sperm cryopreservation of rhesus monkeys. The present study suggests that egg yolk may still hold advantages when compared with LDL as effective components in extenders for sperm cryopreservation in rhesus monkeys. 展开更多
