Biodegradable implants from magnesium(Mg)alloys have emerged in the biomedical field especially in the orthopedic and cardiovascular stent applications owing to their low density, high specific strength, excellent machinability, good biocompatibility, and biodegradability. The primary shortcoming of Mg-based implants is their low corrosion resistance in the physiological environment, which results in premature mechanical integrity loss before adequate healing and the production of excessive hydrogen gas, which is harmful to the body tissues and negatively affects the biocompatibility of the implant.Laser surface modification has recently received attention because it can improve the surface properties such as surface chemistry, roughness, topography, corrosion resistance, wear resistance, hydrophilicity, and thus cell response to the surface of the material. The composition and microstructures including textures and phases of laser-treated surfaces depend largely on the laser processing parameters(input laser power, laser scan velocity, frequency, pulse duration, pressure, gas circulation, working time, spot size, beam focal position, and laser track overlap)and the thermophysical properties of the substrate(solubility, melting point, and boiling point). This review investigates the impacts of various laser surface modification techniques including laser surface melting, laser surface alloying, laser cladding, laser surface texturing, and laser shock peening, and highlights their significance in improving the surface properties of biodegradable Mg alloys for implant applications.Additionally,we explore how different laser process parameters affect its composition, microstructure, and surface properties in each laser surface modification technique. 展开更多

Strong anisotropic corrosion and mechanical properties caused by specimen orientations greatly limit the applications of wrought magnesium alloys. To investigate the influences of specimen orientation, the corrosion tests and(corrosion)fatigue crack growth tests were conducted. The rolled and transverse surfaces of the materials show distinct corrosion rate differences in the stable corrosion stage, but the truth is the opposite for the initial stage of corrosion. In air, specimen orientations have a significant influence on the plastic deformation mechanisms near the crack tip, which results in different fatigue fracture surfaces and cracking paths.Compared with R-T specimens,N-T specimens show a slower fatigue crack growth(FCG)rate in air, which can be attributed to crack closure effects and deformation twinning near the crack tip.The corrosion environment will not significantly change the main plastic deformation mechanisms for the same type of specimen. However, the FCG rate in phosphate buffer saline(PBS)is one order of magnitude higher than that in air, which is caused by the combined effects of hydrogen-induced cracking and anodic dissolution.Owing to the similar corrosion rates at crack tips, the specimens with different orientations display close FCG rates in PBS. 展开更多

Magnesium alloy is one of the lightest metal structural materials. The weight is further reduced through the hollow structure. However, the hollow structure is easily damaged during processing. In order to maintain the hollow structure and to transfer the stresses during the high temperature deformation, the sand mandrel is proposed. In this paper, the hollow AZ31 magnesium alloy three-channel joint is studied by hot extrusion forming.Sand as one of solid granule medium is used to fill the hollow magnesium alloy. The extrusion temperatures are 230℃ and 300℃,respectively.The process parameters(die angle, temperature, bottom thickness, sidewall thickness,edge-to-middle ratio in bottom, bottom shape)of the hollow magnesium alloy are analyzed based on the results of experiments and the finite element method. The results are shown that the formability of the hollow magnesium alloy will be much better when the ratio of sidewall thickness to the bottom thickness is 1:1.5.Also when edge-to-middle ratio in bottom is about 1:1.5,a better forming product can be received. The best bottom shape in these experiments will be convex based on the forming results. The grain will be refined obviously after the extrusion. Also the microstructures will be shown as streamlines. And these lines will be well agreement with the mold in the corner. 展开更多

Electroactive anticorrosion coatings are specialized surface treatments that prevent or minimize corrosion. Thestudy employs strategic thermodynamic equilibriumcalculations to pioneer a novel factor in corrosion protection.A first-time proposal, the total acidity (TA) potential of the hydrogen (pH) concept significantly shapes medicalmagnesium alloys. These coatings are meticulously designed for robust corrosion resistance, blending theoreticalinsights and practical applications to enhance our grasp of corrosion prevention mechanisms and establisha systematic approach to coating design. The groundbreaking significance of this study lies in its innovativeintegration of the TA/pH concept, which encompasses the TA/pH ratio of the chemical environment. This approachsurpasses convention by acknowledging the intricate interplay between the acidity and pH levels within thecoating formulation, thereby optimizing metal-phosphate-based conversion coatings and transforming corrosionmitigation strategies. To authenticate the TA/pH concept, the study comprehensively compares its findings withexisting research, rigorously validating the theoretical framework and reinforcing the correlates among TA/pHvalues and observed corrosion resistance in the coatings. The influence of mutations that occur naturally inthe detergent solution on persistent phosphorus changes is shown by empirical confirmation, which improvescorrosion resistance. This realization advances the field ofmaterials and the field’s knowledge of coated generation, particularly anticorrosion converter layers. 展开更多

Wrought magnesium alloy AZ80 with a thick section of 20 mm was prepared by squeeze casting (SC) and permanent steel mold casting (PSMC). The porosity measurements of the SC and PSMC depicted that SC AZ80 had a pore content of 0.52%, which was 77% lower than 2.21% of PSMC AZ80 counterpart. The YS, UTS, ef, E and strengthening rate of cast AZ80 were determined by mechanical pulling. The engineering stress versus strain bended lines showed that SC AZ80 had a YS of 84.7 MPa, a UTS of 168.2 MPa, 5.1% in ef, and 25.1 GPa in modulus. But, the YS, UTS and ef of the PSMC AZ80 specimen were only 71.6 MPa, 109.0 MPa, 1.9% and 21.9 GPa. The findings of the mechanical pulling evidently depicted that the YS, UTS, ef and E of SC AZ80 were 18%, 54%, 174% and 15% higher than PSMC counterpart. The computed resilience and toughness suggested that the SC AZ80 exhibited greater resistance to tensile loads during elastic deformation and possessed higher capacity to absorb energy during plastic deformation compared to the PSMC AZ80. At the beginning of permanent change, the strengthening rate of SC AZ80 was 10,341 MPa, which was 9% greater than 9489 MPa of PSMC AZ80. The high mechanical characteristics of SC AZ80 should be primarily attributed to its low porosity level. . 展开更多

Accumulative alternating back extrusion was a potential fine-grain modification method. In this paper,it was an innovative attempt to develop high-performance magnesium alloy sheet by this process.Under the condition of 350 K,commercial AZ31 magnesium alloy was made into billet by accumulative alternating back extrusion, and then extruded into fine-grain magnesium alloy sheet.Through a systematic study of its microstructure and mechanical properties, the results showed that the initial state had an important influence on the evolution of the structure during extrusion. After accumulative alternating back extrusion to produce the billet, the grain size of the sheet obtained by extrusion was significantly refined, which was related to the accumulation of deformation and grain refinement during the alternating loading process.Grain refinement caused the proportion of dynamic recrystallization inside the sheet with 2 cycles of accumulative alternating back extrusion to drop to 27%.With the increase of extrusion cycles from 2 to 4,the high density of dislocations led to an increase in the proportion of dynamic recrystallization and finer grains. The texture changed from strong basal texture to weak bimodal texture. The results of uniaxial tensile test show that due to grain refinement and texture change, the yield strength was significantly reduced, and the plasticity was significantly improved. It was verified that accumulative alternating back extrusion was meaningful for subsequent processing, and it also provided scientific guidance for the development of fine-grained magnesium alloy sheet. 展开更多

A V/Ce conversion coating was deposited in the surface of AZ31B magnesium alloy in a solution containing vanadate and cerium nitrate. The coating composition and morphology were examined. The conversion coating appears to consist of a thin and cracked coating with a scattering of spherical particles. The corrosion behavior of the substrate and conversion coating was studied by potentiodynamic polarization and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS).Compared with AZ31B magnesium alloy, the corrosion current density of the conversion coating is decreased by two orders of magnitude. The total impedance of the V/Ce conversion coating rise to 1.6×10^(3)Ω·cm^(2)in contrast with2.2×10^(2)Ω·cm^(2)of the bare AZ31B.In addition, the electrical conductivity of the coating was assessed by conductivity meter and Mott-Schottky measurement. The results reveal a high dependence of the conductivity of the coating on the semiconductor properties of the phase compositions. 展开更多

Magnesium(Mg)alloys are generally used in light-weight structural applications due to their higher specific strength. However, the usage of these Mg alloys is limited due to their poor formability at room temperature, which is attributed to lower count of slip systems associated with the hcp crystal structure. To address these limitations, several new magnesium alloys and also many processing strategies have been developed and reported in the literature.ZE41 Mg is an alloy with significant quantities of zinc(Zn)and rare earth(RE)elements and has emerged as a promising material for aerospace, automotive, electronics, biomedical and many other industries. To make this alloy more competitive and viable,it should possess better mechanical and corrosion properties.Hence, the current paper reviews the effect of bulk mechanical processing on grain refinement, microstructural modification, and corresponding changes in the mechanical behaviour of ZE41Mg alloy.Further, the effect of various surface modification techniques on altering the surface microstructure and surface properties such as wear and corrosion are also briefly summarized and presented. This review also discusses the challenges and the future perspectives in developing high-performing ZE41 Mg alloys. 展开更多

Magnesium and its alloy have good mechanical properties and biodegradability, and have become the hotspot of the next-generation biodegradable vascular stent materials. However, their rapid degradation in vivo and poor biocompatibility are still the bottlenecks of clinical applications for the cardiovascular stents. In particular, how to induce the repair and regeneration of the vascular endothelial with normal physiological functions on the surface of the magnesium alloy stent materials represents the key to its clinical application in the field of cardiovascular stents. It has been believed that it is an ideal way to completely solve the postoperative complications through constructing the multifunctional anti-corrosive bioactive coating on the magnesium alloy surface to induce the formation of vascular endothelium with normal physiological functions. However, how to construct a corrosion-resistant multifunctional bioactive coating with the good endothelial regeneration abilities on the magnesium alloy surface still faces a great challenge. This paper mainly focused on highlighting and summarizing the recent advances in the surface endothelialization of the magnesium alloy materials for the vascular stent, including the bio-inert coating,in-situ immobilization of bioactive molecules on the surface, polymer coating loaded with bioactive factors, novel multifunctional polymer coating, bioactive micropatterns, bioactive layer with glycocalyx-like structure,NO-releasing coating and bioactive sol-gel coating. The advantages and disadvantages of these strategies were discussed and analyzed. Finally,in the senses of future development and clinical application, this paper analyzed and summarized the development direction and prospect of surface endothelialization of the magnesium alloy vascular stents. It is anticipated that this review can give the new cues to the surface endothelialization of the cardiovascular magnesium alloy stents and promote future advancements in this field. 展开更多

In this study,we successfully developed a low RE containing Mg-3Y-2Gd-1Nd-0.5Zr(wt%)alloy with high strength-ductility synergy by combined processes of hot extrusion, hot rolling and ageing. This alloy exhibits an excellent strength-ductility balance(UTS of 345±2.0 MPa,TYS of 301±5.0 MPa and EL of 9.2±1.9%),which is better than that of many Mg-RE wrought alloys with higher RE concentration and even comparable to that of 6061 Al wrought alloy.A long-range chain-like structure consisting ofβphase,βH phase,βM phase and zig-zag atomic columns is observed for the first time in the studied alloy. The combined process of hot extrusion and hot rolling boosts the formation of deformed grains and low angle grain boundaries, and makes the deformed grains dominate in the alloy strengthening.Under this circumstance, the following ageing generates a novel heterogeneous structure comprising the long-range chain-like structure with broad interparticle spacing and the spacious precipitate-free zones in the deformed grains, which plays a key role in the concurrent strengthening and toughening of the alloy. The present study demonstrates that the deformed grains with long-range chain-like structures and precipitate-free zones is desirable microstructure for the low RE containing Mg alloys to achieve high strength-ductility synergy. 展开更多

In this work, plasma electrolytic oxidation(PEO)coatings were produced on magnesium alloy AZ31 in aluminate, silicate and phosphate-based electrolytes, and followed by hydrothermal treatments in order to synthesis layered double hydroxides(LDHs)based nanocontainers.LDHs synthesis was done in three different growth solutions(deionized water, sodium nitrate and aluminum nitrate containing solution). In frame of this work it was shown, that it was difficult to form LDHs on Si-based PEO coating, due to more stable silicate phases in comparison with aluminate and phosphate phases in respective PEO coatings. The obtained hybrid LDH/PEO coatings were characterized using SEM,EDS and GDOES,and then the corrosion protection was further investigated by EIS.Based on the obtained results,it was confirmed that, the hydrothermal treatments in Al^(3+)containing solution played an important role on overall corrosion resistance for phosphate and silicate-based PEO coatings, but not for Al-based PEO coatings. 展开更多

The uniaxial ratchetting-fatigue interaction of extruded AZ31 magnesium(Mg)alloy is investigated by uniaxial stress-controlled cyclic tests at room temperature and with addressing the roles of different plastic deformation mechanisms.Different stress levels are prescribed to reflect the cyclic plasticity of the alloy controlled by diverse deformation mechanisms(i.e.,dislocation slipping, deformation twinning and detwinning ones),and then the influences of stress level and stress rate on the ratchetting and fatigue life are discussed. The experimental results demonstrate that different evolution characteristics of whole-life ratchetting and fatigue life presented during cyclic tests with various mean stresses, stress amplitudes and stress rates are determined by the dominated plastic deformation mechanisms. It’s worth noting that the ratchetting can occur in the compressive direction even in the cyclic tests with a positive(tensile)mean stress, and the fatigue life increases first and then decreases with the increase of mean stress on account of the interaction between dislocation slipping and twinning/detwinning mechanisms.Comparing the fatigue lives obtained in the asymmetric stress-controlled and symmetrical strain-controlled cycle tests,it is seen that the ratchetting deformation causes an additional damage, and then leads to a shortening of fatigue life. 展开更多

Magnesium and its alloys have such advantages with lightweight, high specific strength, good damping, high castability and machinability, which make them an attractive choice for applications where weight reduction is important, such as in the aerospace and automotive industries. However, their practical applications are still limited because of their poor corrosion resistance, low high temperature strength and ambient formability. Based on such their property shortcomings, recently degradable magnesium alloys were developed for broadening their potential applications. Considering the degradable Mg alloys for medical applications were well reviewed, the present review put an emphasis on such degradable magnesium alloys for structural and functional applications, especially the applications in the environmental and energy fields. What's more, after tumor tissue is eliminated, Mg alloys prevent tumor recurrence, fill tissue defects and promote tissue regeneration. The antitumor effects of Mg alloys are mainly due to their degradation products. Overall, Mg alloys show great potential in tumor treatments due to the dual function of antitumor and tissue regeneration. 展开更多
