Introduction: Music therapy is a practice for helping and supporting people with intellectual and relational difficulties. This study illustrated the benefits of music therapy for young people living with intellectual disabilities (YLID) in an African context. Methodology: This study investigated six young individuals with intellectual disabilities who had undergone three years of music therapy. They were participants in the inclusive non-academic training program at the National School of Arts in Dakar from 2017 to 2019. Data collection utilized individual interviews with the youths, evaluation grids from teachers and psychiatrists. Guardians provided informed consent along with the assent of the young participants. Results: The six young were aged between 18 and 30 years old, with an average age of 24.6 years. Four of the YLID were male. Three young people with intellectual disabilities had delayed psychomotor development. Observations revealed the beneficial influence of music therapy on the health and well-being of young individuals. Music played a role in alleviating stress and anxiety among youth with intellectual disabilities (YLID), enhancing their mood and mental health. It assisted in navigating challenging situations and heightened alertness among YLID. Additionally, music therapy contributed to improvements in dyslexia, fine and gross motor skills, and memory development among intellectually disabled youth, ultimately facilitating their integration into society. Conclusion: In light of our results, music therapy makes a major contribution to the empowerment of YLID. Engaging in musical activities helps young people connect with others through instrumental expression and a sense of accomplishment. By facilitating music therapy, it becomes possible to combat discrimination and stigmatization, thus promoting the social inclusion of intellectually disabled youth. Therefore, it is important to promote music therapy in Senegal to meet the needs of YLID. 展开更多

Globally, cancer cases and mortality have recently escalated and have attracted global concern. The clinical diagnosis and manifestation of cancer can result in significant mental health issues like depression and anxiety disorders. The tendency of people with cancer to suffer from psychological disorders such as anxiety and depression is usually high.A significant number of deaths related to cancer may likely not be from the killer disease but from psychological disorders associated with the illness. The utilization of music as a remedial approach to healing mental disorders cannot be overstated. Thus, identifying the impacts of music therapy in dealing with depression and anxiety disorders among people with cancer is relevant,as the majority of methods used in treating cancer have some side effects which may trigger psychological disorders in cancer patients.Ultimately, this study explored the significance of music therapy in treating depression and anxiety disorders among people with cancer. To achieve the aim of this study, the authors employed a narrative literature review to investigate the significance of music therapy in addressing depression and anxiety disorders among people with cancer. The type of literature review employed in this study is to provide an understanding of the selected research papers. The review found that music therapy significantly reduces depression and anxiety disorders among breast cancer, lung cancer, prostate cancer, and colorectal cancer patients. It is needful for healthcare providers to incorporate music therapy interventions while treating people with cancer. This will help reduce cancer deaths resulting from psychological disorders rather than the killer disease, cancer. However, the standardized procedures and evaluation criteria for applying music-based intervention strategies in oncology medicine still need to be further established and improved. 展开更多

Moreover, music therapy can be used to modify treatment of cerebral palsy. OBJECTIVE: To study the effects of combined treatment using acupuncture and music therapy on gross motor function measure (GMFM) of children with cerebral palsy, compared with acupuncture treatment alone. DESIGN, TIME AND SETTING: Randomized, controlled, clinical study. The experiment was conducted in Shenzhen Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine between January 2007 and September 2007. PARTICIPANTS: All children with cerebral palsy in the trial were from the outpatient department of Shenzhen Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine. The children were randomly divided into two groups: 30 children in Group B received acupuncture and music therapy, while 30 children in Group A received only acupuncture therapy. METHODS: Subjects in Groups A and B received acupuncture based on syndrome differentiation. The main acupoints were necessary for all participants. At first, flash needling was applied to the acupoints. For the remaining acupoints, the technique of transverse needling was applied to the head acupoints, and perpendicular needling was used for the other points. The inserted needles were twirled and then maintained for 30 minutes. The needle was twirled for one second every other 10 minutes, without reinforcing-reducing techniques. The therapy was performed every other day. The trial consisted of three periods each, and lasted for 84 days. Subjects in Group B received music therapy. They listened to music that they preferred while acupuncture was being performed. Following acupuncture, they were allowed to perform musical activities, such as percussion, singing, and dancing. The music therapy was scheduled for one hour, including listening to music for 30 minutes and music activities for 30 minutes. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: The comprehensive functional evaluation scale of cerebral palsy and the GMFM were applied to test symptoms before and after respective treatment. RESULTS: All 60 children were included in final analysis. The general function of all children with cerebral palsy improved, but the general efficiency in Group B was obviously higher than in Group A (93% and 73%, Х^2 = 4.32, P 〈 0.05). GMFM evaluation showed that the function of crawling and kneeling, standing, and walking improved more significantly in Group B than in Group A (P 〈 0.05), while the function of lying down, rolling, and sitting remained similar between the two groups (P 〉 0.05). CONCLUSION: The combination of acupuncture and music therapy on the treatment of cerebral palsy is more effective than acupuncture alone. The various activities in music therapy may affect treatment of cerebral palsy. 展开更多

Alzheimer’s disease is the most common form of dementia, affecting nearly 9.9 million new people every year. The disease provokes important memory and cognitive impairment, eventually causing individuals to forget their loved ones and rendering them completely dependent on their caretakers. Alzheimer’s patients typically experience more negative emotions, such as frustration and apathy, than healthy older adults. There is currently no cure for the disease. Our research group explores how the integration of virtual reality (VR) and an EEG-based intelligent agent in music therapy can alleviate psychological and cognitive symptoms of the disease. We propose a theory explaining how, through activation of the brain reward system, music can reduce negative emotions, increase positive emotions and as a result increase performance on cognitive tasks. The results of our experimental study concord with our theory: emotional states of participants are improved, as per recorded through EEG, and performances on memory tasks show improvement following the intervention. We believe that the combination of EEG brain assessment, VR and music therapy is a promising method for emotional states and cognitive symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease. 展开更多

Tinnitus, the phenomenon of ringing or buzzing in the ears without an external sound source is one of the most commonly reported symptoms in otorhinolaryngology and affects 10 - 15% of the general population. Models have been developed to account for neural basis of tinnitus, its pathogenesis and its consequences on mental health (deRidder et al., 2013). In most cases tinnitus onset follows a partial hearing impairment. Peripheral sensory deprivation due to cochlear damages may prompt increased neuronal activity in the central auditory system in order to adapt the neural sensitivity to the reduced sensory inputs. This central gain could over amplify the "neural noise" and thus trigger a homeostatic down-regulation of inhib- itory synapses in the auditory cortical map leading to specific reorganization of the cortical representation of the tinnitus percept. Dysfunctional feedback connections from limbic regions to auditory brain areas, interacting at the thalamic level, may account for the psychological impairment. 展开更多

Huntington's disease is a progressive, neurodegenerative, and autosomal dominant disease characterized by motor- and psychiatric disturbances, and cognitive decline. Since there is no cure, all treatment is aimed at improving quality of life. One form of non-drug therapy which is barely recognized, is music therapy. The literature on its use and effect in patients with Huntington's disease is limited. We therefore performed a detailed literature survey in order to delineate the different types of music therapy interventions and their aims. Music therapy studies were included when targeting: (1) motor disturbances; (2) cognitive disturbances; (3) psychiatric disturbances; and (4) emotional/social disturbances. A total of eight studies that met these criteria were analyzed. We found that music therapy interventions vary throughout the different stages of the disease and are not yet applied optimally. Not the stage of the disease but the individual treatment goals seem to be more determinative for the music therapy indications. In conclusion, precise aims and methods in relation to the stage of the disease are not well determined. There is a need for systematic study of this treatment option. 展开更多

Nowadays, nursing has used the efficacy of music therapy in interventions. The aim of the study was to determine the effect of music, which the patients undergoing a coronary angiography for the first time listened to during the intraoperative period, on the level of anxiety in the patients. The study was conducted experimentally as a pretest/posttest control group design. Data collection form;state-trait anxiety inventory, CDs and CD player were used. Inventories were applied to the patients before the process. The study group (100 patients) listened to music throughout the intervention, whilst the control group (100 patients) listened to no music. At the end of the process, all patients were given the same state anxiety inventory once more. The data was assessed by number, percentage, mean distribution with The paired t-test and t test. It was found that the difference between the mean state anxiety scores obtained before and during the coronary angiography were significantly higher in the study group (4.04 ± 1.15) than the control group (2.01 ± 0.10) (p = 0.000). It was concluded that the music listened to during the coronary angiography process had an impact on the intraoperative anxiety levels of the patients. 展开更多

Objective:To evaluate the effectiveness of music therapy on the anxiety level and physiological response of patients undergoing ophthalmic surgery. Methods:Relevant randomized controlled trials that compared the combined effect of music therapy for patients undergoing ophthalmic surgery were included.Four English databases and three Chinese databases were searched from inception to Jan.2022.Two reviewers independently performed data extraction and risk of bias assessments. The Cochrane Collaboration tool was used to assess the risk of bias.Meta-analysis was performed using Review Manager 5.3.The outcomes were overall anxiety, blood pressure, heart rate and pain. Results:A total of 11 trials with 1,469 participants were included in the meta-analysis.Compared to standard care, music therapy had a good effect on reducing the anxiety levels of patients undergoing ophthalmic surgery(P<0.05).The results also suggested that music therapy produced a significant improvement in blood pressure(P<0.05)and heart rate(P<0.05).The visual analogue scale(VAS)showed that music therapy significantly reduced pain compared to standard care(P<0.05).Conclusions:This meta-analysis provided evidence that music therapy has an obvious effect on relieving anxiety levels, while it is also more effective in alleviating pain and improving physiological responses than standard care alone. Our findings may provide accurate evidence-based guidance for the clinical implementation of music therapy. In the future, more high-quality studies are required for verifying these results. 展开更多

Background:Elevated anxiety levels are common in patients on mechanical ventilation(MV)and may challenge recovery.Research suggests music-based interventions may reduce anxiety during MV.However, studies inves-tigating specific music therapy techniques, addressing psychological and physiological well-being in patients on MV,are scarce. Methods:This three-arm randomized clinical pilot study was conducted with MV patients admitted to the intensive care unit(ICU)of Hospital San Joséin Bogotá,Colombia between March 7,2022,and July 11,2022.Patients were divided into three groups:intervention group 1(IG1),music-assisted relaxation;intervention group 2(IG2),patient-preferred therapeutic music listening;and control group(CG),standard care. The main outcome measure was the 6-item State-Anxiety Inventory.Secondary outcomes were:pain(measured with a visual analog scale),resilience(measured with the Brief Resilience Scale),agitation/sedation(measured with the Richmond Agitation-Sedation Scale),vital signs(including heart rate, blood pressure, oxygen saturation, and respiratory rate),days of MV,extubation success, and days in the ICU.Additionally, three patients underwent electroencephalography during the interventions. Results:Data from 23 patients were analyzed in this study. The age range of the patients was 24.0-84.0 years, with a median age of 66.0 years(interquartile range:57.0-74.0).Of the 23 patients,19 were female(82.6%).No statistically significant differences between the groups were observed for anxiety(P=0.330),pain(P=0.624),resilience(P=0.916),agitation/sedation(P=0.273),length of ICU stay(P=0.785),or vital signs.A statistically significant difference between the groups was found for days of MV(P=0.019).Electroencephalography mea-surements showed a trend toward delta and theta band power decrease for two patients and a power increase on both beta frequencies(slow and fast)in the frontal areas of the brain for one patient. Conclusions:In this pilot study, music therapy did not significantly affect the anxiety levels in patients on MV.However, the interventions were widely accepted by the staff, patients, and caregivers and were safe, considering the critical medical status of the participants.Further large-scale randomized controlled trials are needed to investigate the potential benefits of music therapeutic interventions in this population. 展开更多
