The ratio of metal：P stoichiometry was used to identify the accumulation pathways of heavy metals （V, Cr, Co, Ni, Cu, Cd, and Pb） from periphyton to snails Cipangopaludina chinensis Gray （C. chinensis） in the Bai...The ratio of metal：P stoichiometry was used to identify the accumulation pathways of heavy metals （V, Cr, Co, Ni, Cu, Cd, and Pb） from periphyton to snails Cipangopaludina chinensis Gray （C. chinensis） in the Bai River watershed. The results showed that periphyton communities were mainly composed of two types of algae, filamentous green algae and unicellular diatoms. The proportion of unicellular diatoms in the periphyton community is a key factor that influences metal accumulation in C. chinensis. The V, Cr, Co, Ni, and Cd content of C. chinensis increased steadily as the corresponding metal content of periphyton increased, but Cu and Pb in the snail did not increase in the periphyton. Mechanisms of V, Cr, and Ni accumulation were found to be related to the proportion of diatoms, while Cd and Pb accumulation were dependent on the physiological characteristics of C. chinensis. The accumulation of Cu in C. chinensis was closely related to their grazing behavior. The metal：P stoichiometry revealed that Cr, Ni, and Cd can reduce the potential ecological risks associated with increased P inputs to the ecosystem. V and Co were considered to be relatively safe, regardless of the periphyton P content. Finally, Pb may not be prone to transfer to higher trophic levels, and may pose the lowest ecological risks of the studied heavy metals, but Cu can cause potential ecological risks when eutrophication has occurred.展开更多

Torquigener albomaculosus,also known as the white-spotted pufferfish,is known for creating circular nests in the underwater sand as part of the mating ritual.The nests are built by the males to attract females through...Torquigener albomaculosus,also known as the white-spotted pufferfish,is known for creating circular nests in the underwater sand as part of the mating ritual.The nests are built by the males to attract females through the nest’s impressive design and related ability to gather fine sand particles.As the fluid-dynamic processes associated with these unique nests are still almost completely unknown,in the present study,an analysis has been conducted to investigate how the geometric parameters related to the nest design influence the fluid velocity in its center.For this reason,a geometric model of the nest consisting of 24 channels,where each unit channel can be described by three strips of broken lines,has been introduced,and a multivariate analysis has been implemented to determine the relative weight of each considered parameter.In particular,the“optimal”combination of parameters has been obtained by means of an orthogonal design approach.We show that these bio-nest structures also display a potential for significant application in marine litter collection,or for use as a buffer against the waves in offshore areas.展开更多

The Lady of Shalott is considered to be one of Alfred Lord Tennyson’s masterpieces.The poem conversely demonstrates art and life,the aesthetic and the political,are fully interwoven:the involvement in the social worl...The Lady of Shalott is considered to be one of Alfred Lord Tennyson’s masterpieces.The poem conversely demonstrates art and life,the aesthetic and the political,are fully interwoven:the involvement in the social world which is symbolically the destination of the Lady in the poem.The Lady who is the emblem of such an artwork can be ascribed qualities,for instance,self-containment,objectified otherness,removal from the fluidity of life,and participation in a higher order of existence,for which it is autonomy.Kermode points out that“the Romantic artwork often identifies itself with an emblematic image of autonomy and femininity”,inextricably interlinked.Her mirror shows her only“Shadows of the world”.The Lady’s web flies“Out”and floats“wide”when she“turns round”with“that desire of making an impression upon another mind”,when she seeks to address Lancelot.The mirror reconnects the Lady’s art to the real world beyond her window.Though the artist is unable to see it during the process of production,her artistic web,once out in a wider space than the tower and freed from the loom,is a true representation of outward things,the actions,and events of Camelot.This paper examines that the traditional referentiality of Tennyson’s‘The Lady of Shalott’can be better understood by supplementing the poet’s medieval sources,of little more than tangential relevance to the poem,with Homeric influences.The poem is similar to a fairytale,however,I have given an alternate reality of the Lady of Shallot in my version of a fairytale,where the characters remain the same but the fairytale takes a happy ending rather than a tragic death.My version is different from Tennyson’s since I believe the lady deserves to be jovial.Sir Lancelot was unaware of her fascination and feelings for him,as she could hardly express her feelings due to her imprisonment.She is so taken by him that she stops her work and looks at Camelot,though she risks the mysterious curse.The mirror breaks and her web magically floats out of the window on its own.She realizes that she is cursed.展开更多
