The recent increase in blast/bombing incidents all over the world has pushed the development of effective strengthening approaches to enhance the blast resistance of existing civil infrastructures.Engineered geopolymer composite(EGC)is a promising material featured by eco-friendly,fast-setting and strain-hardening characteristics for emergent strengthening and construction. However, the fiber optimization for preparing EGC and its protective effect on structural elements under blast scenarios are uncertain. In this study, laboratory tests were firstly conducted to evaluate the effects of fiber types on the properties of EGC in terms of workability, dry shrinkage, and mechanical properties in compression, tension and flexure. The experimental results showed that EGC containing PE fiber exhibited suitable workability, acceptable dry shrinkage and superior mechanical properties compared with other types of fibers. After that,a series of field tests were carried out to evaluate the effectiveness of EGC retrofitting layer on the enhancement of blast performance of typical elements. The tests include autoclaved aerated concrete(AAC)masonry walls subjected to vented gas explosion, reinforced AAC panels subjected to TNT explosion and plain concrete slabs subjected to contact explosion. It was found that EGC could effectively enhance the blast resistance of structural elements in different scenarios. For AAC masonry walls and panels, with the existence of EGC,the integrity of specimens could be maintained, and their deflections and damage were significantly reduced. For plain concrete slabs, the EGC overlay could reduce the diameter and depth of the crater and spallation of specimens. 展开更多

Solid solution strengthening(SSS)is one of the main contributions to the desired tensile properties of nickel-based superalloys for turbine blades and disks. The value of SSS can be calculated by using Fleischer’s and Labusch’s theories, while the model parameters are incorporated without fitting to experimental data of complex alloys. In thiswork, four diffusionmultiples consisting of multicomponent alloys and pure Niare prepared and characterized. The composition and microhardness of singleγphase regions in samples are used to quantify the SSS.Then,Fleischer’s and Labusch’s theories are examined based on high-throughput experiments, respectively. The fitted solid solution coefficients are obtained based on Labusch’s theory and experimental data, indicating higher accuracy.Furthermore, six machine learning algorithms are established, providing a more accurate prediction compared with traditional physical models and fitted physical models. The results show that the coupling of highthroughput experiments and machine learning has great potential in the field of performance prediction and alloy design. 展开更多

Mg/Al bimetal combines the advantages of both aluminum and magnesium and has broad application prospects in automotive, aerospace, weapons, digital products and so on. The compound casting has the characteristics of low cost, easy to achieve metallurgical combination and suitable for the preparation of complex bimetallic parts. However, bimetallic joint strength is low due to differences of physical properties between Al and Mg, oxide film on metallic surface and interfacial Al-Mg IMCs, which is closely related to the interfacial microstructure and properties. Therefore, how to control the interface of the bimetal to achieve performance enhancement is the focus and difficulty in this field. At present, there are mainly the following strengthening methods. First, the “zincate galvanizing” and “electrolytic polishing+anodic oxidation” technology were exert on the surface of Al alloy to remove and break the oxide film, which improved the wettability between Al and Mg. Second, the undesirable Al-Mg IMCs were reduce or elimination by adding the interlayers(Zn, Ni and Ni-Cu). Thirdly, the evolution process of interfacial microstructure was changed and fine strengthening phases were formed by adding Si element to Al alloy or rare earth element to Mg alloy. Fourthly, mechanical vibration and ultrasonic vibration were applied in the process of the filling and solidification to refine and homogenize the interfacial structure. Finally, some other methods, including secondary rolling, thermal modification, heat treatment and constructing exterior 3D morphology, also can be used to regulate the interfacial microstructure and compositions. The above strengthening methods can be used alone or in combination to achieve bimetallic strengthening. Finally, the future development direction of the Mg/Al bimetal is prospected, which provides some new ideas for the development and application of the Mg/Al bimetal. 展开更多

Precipitation strengthening is a key strategy for improving the overall mechanical properties of Mg alloys. In Mg-Al alloys, basal precipitates are known to strengthen against twinning, resulting in an increase in the critical resolved shear stress(CRSS) necessary for continued deformation. Although several models have been proposed to quantify the influence of precipitate shape, size, and distribution on the CRSS, the accuracy, scope, and applicability of these models has not been fully assessed. Accordingly, the objectives of this study are:(i)to analyze the accuracy of analytical models proposed in the literature for precipitation strengthening against twin thickening and propagation(in Mg-Al alloys) using phase-field(PF) simulations,(ii) to propose modifications to these model forms to better capture the observed trends in the PF data, and(iii) to subsequently test the predictiveness of the extended models in extrapolating to experimental strengthening data.First, using an atomistically-informed phase-field method, the interactions between migrating twin boundaries(during the propagation and thickening stages) and basal plates are simulated for different precipitate sizes and arrangements. In general, comparison of the increase in CRSS determined from the PF simulations and the predictions from four precipitation strengthening models reveals that modifications are necessary to the model forms to extend their applicability to precipitation strengthening against both twin thickening and propagation. A subsequent comparison between predictions from the extended models and experimental strengthening data for peak age-hardened samples reveals that the(extended) single dislocation and dislocation wall models provide reasonably accurate values of the increase in CRSS.Ultimately, the results presented here help elucidate the fidelity and applicability of the various hardening models in predicting precipitation strenghtening effects in technologically important alloys. 展开更多

Nanotubes, such as boron nitride nanotubes (BNNTs) and carbon nanotubes (CNTs), exhibit excellent mechanical properties. In this work, high-quality BNNTs were synthesized by ball milling and annealing. Subsequently, well-dispersed 3vol%BNNTs/Cu and 3vol%CNTs/Cu composites were successfully prepared using ball milling, spark plasma sintering, and followed by hot-rolling. Moreover, the mechanical properties and strengthening mechanisms of BNNTs/Cu and CNTs/Cu composites were compared and discussed in details. At 293 K,both BNNTs/Cu and CNTs/Cu composites exhibited similar ultimate tensile strength (UTS) of~404 MPa, which is approximately 170%higher than pure Cu. However, at 873 K, the UTS and yield strength of BNNTs/Cu are 27%and 29%higher than those of CNTs/Cu, respectively. This difference can be attributed to the stronger inter-walls shear resistance, higher thermomechanical stability of BNNTs, and stronger bonding at the BNNTs/Cu interface as compared to the CNTs/Cu interface. These findings provide valuable insights into the potential of BNNTs as an excellent reinforcement for metal matrix composites, particularly at high temperature. 展开更多

The aim of this study is to investigate the influence of fiber reinforcement polymer (FRP) on shear behavior of reinforcement concrete (RC) beams with various guidelines. The FRP thickness, beam depth and concrete strength at ultimate load are considered as main strength parameters. A finite element (FE) by using ANSYS computer program was used to analyze the reinforced concrete beams. The numerical models were used to investigate the effect of beam depth, concrete strength, CFRP sheet configuration, and CFRP sheet thickness on the behavior of reinforced concrete beams strengthened with CFRP sheets compared with different guidelines. The results from ACI guideline show little difference compared with FE, which make it suitable for RC beams strengthened with FRP sheets. 展开更多

Aging prior to twinning deformation was proposed to alter the precipitate orientation of the plate-shapedβ-MgAlfrom(0002)basal planes(named basal plates)to■prismatic planes(named prismatic plates)in AZ31 Mg alloy. The experimental results showed that the compressive yield strength(CYS)of the sample containing prismatic plates increased 40 MPa and the compression ratio raised by 22%compared to that containing basal plates. The underlying strengthening mechanism was analyzed via a yield strengthen(YS)model with a function of grain size, precipitate characters(size, oritention, fraction)and Schmid factor(SF).It revealed that the improvement of CYS was mainly attributed to the altered precipitate orientation and refined grain size produced by twinning deformation.Particularly, the prismatic plates always have a stronger hardening effect on basal slip than basal plates under the same varites of precipitate diameter and SF.Besides, the decreased CRSS ratio of prismatic slip to basal slip revealed that the activity of non-basal slip in Mg alloy might be enhanced.More activated slip systems provided more mobile dislocations, contributing to the large compression ratio of the Mg rolled sheet with prismatic plates. 展开更多

The influence of aging temperature and time on fracture feature of monotonic tensile samples of alumi-num-Iithium alloy 2090+Ce was investigated. The effects and mechanisms of extrinsic strengthening during aging for this alloy with a flat unrecrystallized structure were discussed. The mechanisms were analysed from four aspects. The theory of extrinsic strengthening from the delamination strengthening was presented. The results in this research show that the strength and ductility of aluminum-lithium alloy with a flat unrecrystallized structure are superior to those with recrystallized structure.Several reasons have been advanced for the ductility improvement effect of flat uncrystallized structure, including wedging action between flat grain, action of short-transverse delamination on impeding the growth of main crack, action on the reduction in the detrimental influence of weak grain boundaries and action on impeding the intergranular fracture on main fracture surface. The strengthening effect of flat uncrystallized structure is attributed to the extrinsic strengthening derived from delamination strengthening. From underage to peakage, the fracture mode of this alloy is transgranular fracture plus short-transverse delamination. The tendency of short-transverse delamination in creases with aging, thereby enhancing the delamination strengtheniag effect.Under overaging condition, the fracture mode is predominately intersubgranular, which results in the loss of delamination strengthening. 展开更多

Continuously rising demands of legislators require a significant reduction of CO2-emission and thus fuel consumption across all vehicle classes. In this context, lightweight construction materials and designs become a single most important factor. The main engineering challenge is to precisely adapt the material and component properties to the specific load situation. However, metallic car body structures using “Tailored blanks” or “Patchwork structures” meet these requirements only insufficiently, especially for complex load situations (like crash). An innovative approach has been developed to use laser beams to locally strengthen steel crash structures used in vehicle bodies. The method tailors the workpiece hardness and thus strength at selected locations to adjust the material properties for the expected load distribution. As a result, free designable 3D-strengthening-patterns surrounded by softer base metal zones can be realized by high power laser beams at high processing speed. The paper gives an overview of the realizable process window for different laser treatment modes using current high brilliant laser types. Furthermore, an efficient calculation model for determining the laser track properties (depth/width and flow curve) is shown. Based on that information, simultaneous FE modelling can be efficiently performed. Chassis components are both statically and cyclically loaded. Especially for these components, a modulation of the fatigue behavior by laser-treated structures has been investigated. Simulation and experimental results of optimized crash and deep drawing components with up to 55% improved level of performance are also illustrated. 展开更多

The effects of large cold deformation after solution treatment on the precipitation characteristic and deformation strength of 2024 and 7A04 Al alloys were investigated. The tensile property tests indicate that the ageing response of the 2024 aluminum alloy is accelerated when treated by cold deformation after solution treatment, and the tensile strength is increased to about 140 MPa while the elongation still keeps above 8%.However,compared with the 2024 alloys, although the aging response of the cold deformed 7A04 aluminum alloy is accelerated, the tensile strength has not changed obviously and the elongation is even decreased drastically. The results of TEM observation show that the S’ phase inside the dislocation cells and at the boundaries of the dislocation cells of the 2024 aluminum alloy has a uniform distribution. But in 7A04 aluminum alloy the club-shaped η’ phase forms at the boundaries of dislocation cells even on dislocation lines, while there still exists small spheric G.P zone in the region with less dislocation. In addition the precipitates in 7A04 alloy with cold rolling present more obvious tendency of growth and coarsening than those without cold rolling. It is indicated that the coherent strain energy of the cylinder formed G.P zones with matrix in the 2024 alloy is smaller than that of the spherical G.P zone in 7A04 alloy, for which a different distribution of precipitates and different effect of strengthening are caused in artificial ageing after resolution treatment and large cold deformation. 展开更多

This review summarizes the strengthening mechanisms of reduced activation ferritic/martensitic(RAFM)steels.High-angle grain boundaries, subgrain boundaries,nano-sized M_(23)C_(6),and MX carbide precipitates effectively hinder dislocation motion and increase high-temperature strength.M23C6 carbides are easily coarsened under high temperatures, thereby weakening their ability to block dislocations.Creep properties are improved through the reduction of M23C6 carbides. Thus, the loss of strength must be compensated by other strengthening mechanisms. This review also outlines the recent progress in the development of RAFM steels.Oxide dispersion-strengthened steels prevent M23C6 precipitation by reducing C content to increase creep life and introduce a high density of nano-sized oxide precipitates to offset the reduced strength.Severe plastic deformation methods can substantially refine subgrains and MX carbides in the steel. The thermal deformation strengthening of RAFM steels mainly relies on thermo-mechanical treatment to increase the MX carbide and subgrain boundaries. This procedure increases the creep life of TMT(thermo-mechanical treatment)9Cr-1W-0.06Ta steel by~20 times compared with those of F82H and Eurofer 97 steels under 550℃/260 MPa. 展开更多

The strength of a material is dependent on how dislocations in its crystal lattice can be easily propagated. These dislocations create stress fields within the material depending on their intrinsic character.Generally, the following strengthening mechanisms are relevant in wrought magnesium materials tested at room temperature:fine-grain strengthening, precipitate strengthening and solid solution strengthening as well as texture strengthening. The indirect-extruded Mg-8Sn(T8)and Mg-8Sn-1Al-1Zn(TAZ811)alloys present superior tensile properties compared to the commercial AZ31 alloy extruded in the same condition. The contributions to the strengthen of Mg-Sn based alloys made by four strengthening mechanisms were calculated quantitatively based on the microstructure characteristics, physical characteristics, thermomechanical analysis and interactions of alloying elements using AZ31 alloy as benchmark. 展开更多

The hybrid addition of CNTs was used to improve both the strengths and ductility of SiCp reinforced Mg matrix composites.A novel method was developed to simultaneously disperse SiCp and CNTs in Mg melt.Firstly, new CNTs@SiCp hybrid reinforcements were synthesized by CVD.Thus,CNTs were well pre-dispersed on the SiCp surfaces before they were added to Mg melt. Therefore, the following semisolid stirring and ultrasonic vibration dispersed the new hybrid reinforcements well in Mg-6Zn melt. The hybrid composite exhibits some unique features in microstructures.Although the distribution of SiCp was very uniform in the Mg-6Zn matrix, most CNTs distributed along the strips in the state of micro-clusters,in which CNTs were bonded very well with Mg matrix. Most of the CNTs kept their structure integrity during fabrication process. All these factors ensure that the hybrid composite have much higher strength and elongation than the mono SiC/Mg-6Zn composites. The dominant strengthening mechanism is the load transfer effect of CNTs.Apart from grain refinement, the CNTs toughen the composites by impeding the microcrack propagation inside the material. Thus, the hybrid CNTs@SiCp successfully realizes the reinforcing advantage of“1+1>2”. 展开更多

Mg-rare earth(RE)based systems provide several important commercial alloys and many alloy development opportunities for high strength applications, especially in aerospace and defense industries. The phase diagrams, microstructure, and strengthening mechanisms of these multicomponent systems are very complex and often not well understood in literature. We have calculated phase diagrams of important binary, ternary, and multicomponent RE-containing alloy systems, using CALPHAD(CALculation of PHAse Diagrams).Based on these phase diagrams, this paper offers a critical overview on phase equilibria and strengthening mechanisms in these alloy systems, including precipitation, long period stacking order(LPSO),and other intermetallic phases. This review also summarized several promising Mg-RE based cast alloys in comparison with commercial WE54 and WE43 alloys;and explored new strategies for future alloy development for high strength applications. It is pointed out that the combination of precipitation and LPSO phases can lead to superior strength and ductility in Mg-RE based cast alloys. The precipitates and LPSO phases can form a complex three-dimensional network that effectively impedes dislocation motion on the basal and non-basal planes. The LPSO phases can also prevent the coarsening of precipitates when they interact, thus providing good thermal stability at elevated temperatures.Future research is needed to determine how the combination of these two types of phases can be used in alloy design and industrial scale applications. 展开更多

Determining the width of an induced hydraulic fracture is the first step for applying wellbore strengthening and hydraulic fracturing techniques. However, current 2-D analytical solutions obtained from the plane strain assumption may have large uncertainties when the fracture height is small. To solve this problem, a 3-D finite element method(FEM) is used to model wellbore strengthening and calculate the fracture width. Comparisons show that the 2-D plane strain solution is the asymptote of the 3-D FEM solution. Therefore, the 2-D solution may overestimate the fracture width. This indicates that the2-D solution may not be applicable in 3-D conditions. Based on the FEM modeling, a new 3-D semi-analytical solution for determining the fracture width is proposed, which accounts for the e ects of 3-D fracture dimensions, stress anisotropy and borehole inclination. Compared to the 2-D solution, this new 3-D semi-analytical solution predicts a smaller fracture width. This implies that the 2-D-based old design for wellbore strengthening may overestimate the fracture width, which can be reduced using the proposed 3-D solution. It also allows an easy way to calculate the fracture width in complex geometrical and geological conditions. This solution has been verified against 3-D finite element calculations for field applications. 展开更多
