In the future connected vehicle environment,the information of multiple vehicles ahead can be readily collected in real-time,such as the velocity or headway,which provides more opportunities for information exchange a...In the future connected vehicle environment,the information of multiple vehicles ahead can be readily collected in real-time,such as the velocity or headway,which provides more opportunities for information exchange and cooperative control.Meanwhile,gyroidal roads are one of the fundamental road patterns prevalent in mountainous areas.To effectively control the system,it is therefore significant to explore the evolution mechanism of traffic flow on gyroidal roads under a connected vehicle environment.In this paper,we present a new continuum model with the average velocity of multiple vehicles ahead on gyroidal roads.The stability criterion and KdV-Burger equation are deduced via linear and nonlinear stability analysis,respectively.Solving the above KdV-Burger equation yields the density wave solution,which explores the formation and propagation property of traffic jams near the neutral stability curve.Simulation examples verify that the model can reproduce complex phenomena,such as shock waves and rarefaction waves.The analysis of the local cluster effect shows that the number of vehicles ahead and the radius information,and the slope information of gyroidal roads can exert a great influence on traffic jams.The effect of the first and second terms are positive,while the last term is negative.展开更多
The geological structure is complex in the Hohhot-Baotou area.Several earthquakes with MS≥6.0 have occurred in the area in history.This article selected the Hohhot-Baotou area as the study region and divided it into ...The geological structure is complex in the Hohhot-Baotou area.Several earthquakes with MS≥6.0 have occurred in the area in history.This article selected the Hohhot-Baotou area as the study region and divided it into 2 sub-regions,each with a spatial scope of 3°×2°,according to the spatial distribution of ML≥1.0 earthquakes occurring between January 2001 and April 2010,and the layout of the seismic network in the study region.Average velocity ratios of respective sub-regions were calculated,and comparative analysis was made on their temporal and spatial variations.Results show that there are slight differences between sub-regions in the variation amplitude of average velocity ratio curves over time,which mostly remains between 2.5% to 2.584%.In the Hohhot area,the average velocity ratio is 1.722,significantly lower than the average velocity ratio of 1.733 in the Baotou area.We preliminarily concluded that this was related to the distribution of fault structures and properties of underground media in the Hohhot area.展开更多
The measurement accuracy of an ultrasonic heat meter depends on the relationship of the profile-linear average velocity.There are various methods for the calculation of the laminar and turbulence flow regions,but few ...The measurement accuracy of an ultrasonic heat meter depends on the relationship of the profile-linear average velocity.There are various methods for the calculation of the laminar and turbulence flow regions,but few methods for the transition region.At present,the traditional method to deal with the transition region is to adopt the relationship for the turbulent flow region.In this article,a simplified model of the pipe is used to study the characteristics of the transition flow with specific Reynolds number.The k-εmodel and the Large Eddy Simulation(LES)model are,respectively,used to calculate the flow field of the transition region,and a comparison with the experiment results shows that the LES model is more effective than the k-εmodel,it is also shown that there will be a large error if the relationship based on the turbulence flow is used to calculate the profile-linear average velocity relationship of the transition flow.The profile-linear average velocity for the Reynolds number ranging from 5 300 to 10 000 are calculated,and the relationship curve is obtained.The results of this article can be used to improve the measurement accuracy of ultrasonic heat meter and provide a theoretical basis for the research of the whole transition flow.展开更多

Inorder to verify the results, a laboratory model was established, and the experimental data wereanalyzed. Experimental results indicate that the relation between the average velocity and hydraulicgradient is nonlinear, and can he filled with power functions. And for both the unconfined andconfined flows, the value of the exponent of power functions are close to 0. 5. Thus the experimental results agree well with those from the theoretical analysis. By comparing the calculated andmeasured values of the average velocity under the same conditions, the formulae presented herein aremore effective than the traditional formula based on Darcy' s Law. Based on the consistency between coarse_grained velocity structure function and Harr wavelet transformation,detecting method was presented, by which the coherent structures and their intermittency was identified by multi_scale flatness factor calculated by locally average structure function. Phase_averaged evolution course for multi_scale coherent eddy structures in wall turbulence were extracted by this conditional sampling to educe scheme. The method is brought forward in virtue of the characteristics of low frequency oscillation induced by the propellant ionization in the channel and the oriented movement feature of the plasma density out of the channel. The method, equivalent to the correlation method generally used in the signal processing field, provides a solution to the problem of specific impulse measurement on a timescale of hundreds of microseconds and makes the time evolution of average plasma velocity clear. The comparison between the measured value and the calibrated value shows that the relative error is about 3%.展开更多
In the past few years,attention has mainly been focused on the symmetric Brownian motor(BM)with Gaussian noises,whose current and energy conversion efficiency are very low.Here,we investigate the operating performance...In the past few years,attention has mainly been focused on the symmetric Brownian motor(BM)with Gaussian noises,whose current and energy conversion efficiency are very low.Here,we investigate the operating performance of the symmetric BM subjected to Lévy noise.Through numerical simulations,it is found that the operating performance of the motor can be greatly improved in asymmetric Lévy noise.Without any load,the Lévy noises with smaller stable indexes can let the motor give rise to a much greater current.With a load,the energy conversion efficiency of the motor can be enhanced by adjusting the stable indexes of the Lévy noises with symmetry breaking.The results of this research are of great significance for opening up BM’s intrinsic physical mechanism and promoting the development of nanotechnology.展开更多

The average velocity points were analyzed quantitatively. The results show that the airflow pattern is similar for the three-center arch section under different ventilation velocities and cross sectional areas. The shape of the tunnel cross section and wall are the critical factors influencing the airflow pattern. The average velocity points are mainly close to the tunnel wall. Characteristic equations are developed to describe the average velocity distribution, and provide a theoretical basis for accurately measuring the average velocity in mine tunnels.展开更多

In this study, an innovative system, the fluvia...In many cases, river discharge is indirectly estimated from water level or streamflow velocity near the water surface. However, these methods have limited applicability. In this study, an innovative system, the fluvial acoustic tomography system (FATS), was used for continuous discharge measurement. Transducers with a central frequency of 30 kHz were installed diagonally across the river. The system's significant functions include accurate measurement of the travel time of the transmission signal using a GPS clock and the attainment of a high signal-to-noise ratio as a result of modulation of the signal by the 10th order M-sequence. In addition, FATS is small and lightweight, and its power consumption is low. Operating in unsteady streamflow, FATS successfully measured the cross-sectional average velocity. The agreement between FATS and acoustic Doppler current profilers (ADCPs) on water discharge was satisfactory. Moreover, the temporal variation of the cross-sectional average temperature deduced from the sound speed of FATS was similar to that measured by a temperature sensor near the bank.展开更多

Parameters such as length of cellular automaton, operation speed and random slow mechanism are re-demarcated. A harbour-shaped bus stop is set up and the vehicle changing lane regulation is changed. Through computer simulation, the influence of occupation rate of public transit vehicles on mixed traffic flow and traffic capacity is analysed. The results show that a public transport system can ease urban traffic congestion but creates new jams at the same time, and that the influence of occupation rate of public transit vehicles on traffic capacity is considerable. To develop urban traffic, attention should be paid to the occupation rate of public transit vehicles and traffic development in a haphazard way should be strictly avoided.展开更多

Based on the force balance of water in each sub-section, the average velocities of the main channel, side slope, and floodplain are derived. The lateral momentum exchanges between the sub-sections are expressed by using the apparent shear stress. To verify the model, seven groups of UK Flood Channel Facility (UK-FCF) measured data with a relative water depth between the floodplain and the main channel varying from 0.057 to 0.4 are used for comparison. The result shows that the calculated velocity is larger than the measured data when the relative water depth is small, while it is less than or close to the measured value in the case of a larger relative water depth. The influence of the apparent shear stress on the calculation of velocity on the floodplain is not obvious, while it is much greater on the main channel. The three-stage model is compared with Liu’s two-stage model, showing that the former can give a better prediction for a three-stage trapezoidal compound channel. Finally, the apparent shear stress is calculated and compared with the measured data. The result shows that the chosen values of the momentum transfer coefficients are appropriate.展开更多

In order to study the flapping wind turbine performance, we collect ten years of wind velocity records from the Bangladesh Meteorological Department for two different stations in Bangladesh. The velocity contours and profiles have been the points of observation to find out the suitable turbine shape having the efficiency to initiate the turbine rotation. We made a simple comparative study of the wind velocities profile obtained from the different stations in Bangladesh. A simple numerical study has been conducted and presented by graphical analysis to inspect the wind flow above the constructed structure. Finally, we analyze the wind velocity for the individual months and determine the turbine performance in terms of torque for the average wind velocities of Dhaka and Cox’s Bazar stations.</span>展开更多

Site-amplification factors are then quantified with Vs^30 and applied to the ShakeMap system developed by this study to revise ground-motion amplitudes on bedrock estimated from empirical relationships. Finally, the distribution of ground motion parameters on the surface is obtained. This article also introduces the calculation process, calculation models of the ShakeMap systems and related software systems. In conclusion, certain examples indicate that the ShakeMap system is feasible in the Chinese Mainland.展开更多

In this paper, the spray process of CTST in a column, 570 mm in diameter, was experimentally investigated by using a high-speed camera, and a theoretical model of the average droplet size was established according to the unstable wave theory. The results demonstrated that gas velocity passing through the hole is the key factor affecting the spray angle, which increases gradually with an increase in the gas velocity. When the gas velocity exceeds 7.5 m/s, the spray angle becomes stable at around 55°. The average flow velocity of the liquid sheet at the spray-hole increases significantly with an increase in the gas velocity, and decreases slightly with an increase in the liquid flow rate; moreover, it increases from the bottom of spray hole upward to the top. The density of liquid drops distribution in the spray area can be described by the RosinRammler function. In addition, the liquid drops are mainly concentrated in the area of spray angle ranging from 20° to 40°, and they gradually become uniform with the increase in the gas velocity and the liquid flow rate. The average liquid drop size deceases with an increase in the gas velocity, and increases slightly with an increasing liquid flow rate. In the normal working range, the average liquid drop size is about 1.0 mm to 2.5 mm in diameter.展开更多
Non-stationary characteristic in nature wind has a great effect on buffeting performance of long-span bridges.The influence of key parameters in non-stationary wind velocity models on nonlinear buffeting responses of ...Non-stationary characteristic in nature wind has a great effect on buffeting performance of long-span bridges.The influence of key parameters in non-stationary wind velocity models on nonlinear buffeting responses of a super long-span suspension bridge was investigated in this paper.Firstly,four non-stationary wind velocity models are established by combing the time-varying average wind velocity with an exponential function and the fluctuating wind velocity with four modulation functions,respectively.These non-stationary wind velocity models have obvious non-stationary characteristics and then are validated by the classical power spectrum densities.Finally,three displacement responses of the bridge deck under four different independent variables ofβin the exponential function and four modulation functions were compared,respectively.Results show that the turbulence intensities using two non-uniform modulation functions(NMF)are larger than those using uniform modulation functions(uMF).Moreover,the root mean square(RMS)values of three displacement responses increase with the decrease ofβ.Besides,the RMS values of three displacement under two NMFs are larger than those under two uMFs,and their RMS values under the second uMF are the smallest.展开更多

But this velocity in the transition region is not available at the present. In this article, the velocity in the transition region in pipes is studied by experimental methods. The Particle Image Velocimetry ( PIV ) is used to measure the flow field in the transition region in pipes, and the measured results from PIV are in good agreement with the Westerwell's experimental data. Based on the experimental data of PIV, the curves of the profile-linear average velocity in the transition region against the Reynolds number in the range from 2 000 to 20 000 are obtained, and it is shown that the coefficient k is constant when the Reynolds number is in the range of 2 000-2 400 and 6 000-20 000, and the coefficient k is increasing when the Reynolds number is in the range of 2 400-6 000. The results of this article can be used to improve the measurement accuracy of the ultrasonic flowmeters and as a theoretical basis for the research on the transition flow.展开更多
Si-based thermoelectric(TE)materials are exhibiting remarkable perspectives in self-energized applications with their special advantages.However,the relatively high total thermal conductivity(κ)prevents their TE enha...Si-based thermoelectric(TE)materials are exhibiting remarkable perspectives in self-energized applications with their special advantages.However,the relatively high total thermal conductivity(κ)prevents their TE enhancement.Here,a strategy of co-compositing dual oxides was implemented for enhancing the TE properties of p-type Si_(80)Ge_(20) bulks.Composited Ga2O_(3) was demonstrated to enhance the power factor(PF)due to the crystallization-induced effect of produced Ga by decomposition on SiGe matrix.Associating with compositing SiO_(2) aerogel(a-SiO_(2))powder,not only introduced the fine amorphous inclusions and decreased the grain size of host matrix,but also various nano morphologies were formed,i.e.,nano inclusions,precipitations,twin boundaries(TBs),and faults.Combining with the eutectic Ge,hierarchical scattering centers impeded the phonon transport comprehensively(decreasing the phonon group velocity(a v)and relaxation time)for reducing the lattice-induced thermal conductivity(lκ).As a result,a minimumκof 2.38 W·m^(−1)·K^(−1) was achieved,which is significantly dropped by 32.6%in contrast with that of the pristine counterpart.Ultimately,a maximal dimensionless figure of merit(ZT)of 0.9 was achieved at 600℃,which is better than those of most corresponding oxide-composited Si-based bulks.展开更多
The hydrodynamic characteristics of a rectangular gas-driven inverse liquid-solid fluidized bed(GDFB)using particles of different diameters and densities were investigated in detail.Rising gas bubbles cause a liquid u...The hydrodynamic characteristics of a rectangular gas-driven inverse liquid-solid fluidized bed(GDFB)using particles of different diameters and densities were investigated in detail.Rising gas bubbles cause a liquid upflow in the riser portion,enabling a liquid downflow that causes an inverse fluidization in the downer portion.Four flow regimes(fixed bed regime,initial fluidization regime,complete fluidization regime,and circulating fluidization regime)and three transition gas velocities(initial fluidization gas velocity,minimum fluidization gas velocity,and circulating fluidization gas velocity)were identified via visual observation and by monitoring the variations in the pressure drop.The axial local bed voidage(e)of the downer first decreases and then increases with the increase of the gas velocity.Both the liquid circulation velocity and the average particle velocity inside the downer increase with the increase of the gas velocity in the riser,but decrease with the particle loading.An empirical formula was proposed to successfully predict the Richardson-Zaki index“n”,and the predicted e obtained from this formula has a±5%relative error when compared with the experimental e.展开更多

文摘In the past few years,attention has mainly been focused on the symmetric Brownian motor(BM)with Gaussian noises,whose current and energy conversion efficiency are very low.Here,we investigate the operating performance of the symmetric BM subjected to Lévy noise.Through numerical simulations,it is found that the operating performance of the motor can be greatly improved in asymmetric Lévy noise.Without any load,the Lévy noises with smaller stable indexes can let the motor give rise to a much greater current.With a load,the energy conversion efficiency of the motor can be enhanced by adjusting the stable indexes of the Lévy noises with symmetry breaking.The results of this research are of great significance for opening up BM’s intrinsic physical mechanism and promoting the development of nanotechnology.

文摘Based on 3D modelling of typical tunnels in mines, the airflow distribution in a three-center arch-section tunnel is investigated and the influence of air velocity and cross section on airflow distribution in tunnels is studied. The average velocity points were analyzed quantitatively. The results show that the airflow pattern is similar for the three-center arch section under different ventilation velocities and cross sectional areas. The shape of the tunnel cross section and wall are the critical factors influencing the airflow pattern. The average velocity points are mainly close to the tunnel wall. Characteristic equations are developed to describe the average velocity distribution, and provide a theoretical basis for accurately measuring the average velocity in mine tunnels.

文摘In many cases, river discharge is indirectly estimated from water level or streamflow velocity near the water surface. However, these methods have limited applicability. In this study, an innovative system, the fluvial acoustic tomography system (FATS), was used for continuous discharge measurement. Transducers with a central frequency of 30 kHz were installed diagonally across the river. The system's significant functions include accurate measurement of the travel time of the transmission signal using a GPS clock and the attainment of a high signal-to-noise ratio as a result of modulation of the signal by the 10th order M-sequence. In addition, FATS is small and lightweight, and its power consumption is low. Operating in unsteady streamflow, FATS successfully measured the cross-sectional average velocity. The agreement between FATS and acoustic Doppler current profilers (ADCPs) on water discharge was satisfactory. Moreover, the temporal variation of the cross-sectional average temperature deduced from the sound speed of FATS was similar to that measured by a temperature sensor near the bank.

文摘Based on the existing classical cellular automaton model of traffic flow, a cellular automaton traffic model with different-maximum-speed vehicles mixed on a single lane is proposed, in which public transit and harbour-shaped bus stops are taken into consideration. Parameters such as length of cellular automaton, operation speed and random slow mechanism are re-demarcated. A harbour-shaped bus stop is set up and the vehicle changing lane regulation is changed. Through computer simulation, the influence of occupation rate of public transit vehicles on mixed traffic flow and traffic capacity is analysed. The results show that a public transport system can ease urban traffic congestion but creates new jams at the same time, and that the influence of occupation rate of public transit vehicles on traffic capacity is considerable. To develop urban traffic, attention should be paid to the occupation rate of public transit vehicles and traffic development in a haphazard way should be strictly avoided.

文摘In the paper, we investigate two motor proteins moving along the sidesteps: a motor protein moving along a two- dimensional sidestep and another protein moving along a three-dimensional sidestep. The drift coefficients (or stationary average velocities) of these two motor proteins are calculated. We believe that our investigation of the motor proteins moving along the sidesteps in the present paper can benefit the investigation of the transport of the motor proteins to some extent.

文摘Hydraulic calculation of steady uniform flows in trapezoidal compound open channels is studied. Based on the force balance of water in each sub-section, the average velocities of the main channel, side slope, and floodplain are derived. The lateral momentum exchanges between the sub-sections are expressed by using the apparent shear stress. To verify the model, seven groups of UK Flood Channel Facility (UK-FCF) measured data with a relative water depth between the floodplain and the main channel varying from 0.057 to 0.4 are used for comparison. The result shows that the calculated velocity is larger than the measured data when the relative water depth is small, while it is less than or close to the measured value in the case of a larger relative water depth. The influence of the apparent shear stress on the calculation of velocity on the floodplain is not obvious, while it is much greater on the main channel. The three-stage model is compared with Liu’s two-stage model, showing that the former can give a better prediction for a three-stage trapezoidal compound channel. Finally, the apparent shear stress is calculated and compared with the measured data. The result shows that the chosen values of the momentum transfer coefficients are appropriate.

文摘The basis for the NEHRP site coefficients is summarized in the paper. The comparison of site classification between China and US code provisions has been carried out. The relationship between two site classifications has been found by the analysis of wave velocity of site soil. Thus amplitude-dependent site amplification factors for China site classification has been gained by transformation from US amplification factors. Two amplification factors are specified: Fa for short periods and Fv for longer periods. On the contrast, there is only one long period factor and not a short period factor in the current China code provision.
文摘<span style="font-family:Verdana;">The objective of this research is mainly focused on environment-friendly and moderately slow flapping wind turbine which can easily operate in or near urban areas or rooftops owing to scale merit with low-frequency turbine noise, installation cost, avian mortality rate and safety consideration etc. We considered lift and drag based slow flapping type wind turbine to operate in the residential arena. In order to study the flapping wind turbine performance, we collect ten years of wind velocity records from the Bangladesh Meteorological Department for two different stations in Bangladesh. The velocity contours and profiles have been the points of observation to find out the suitable turbine shape having the efficiency to initiate the turbine rotation. We made a simple comparative study of the wind velocities profile obtained from the different stations in Bangladesh. A simple numerical study has been conducted and presented by graphical analysis to inspect the wind flow above the constructed structure. Finally, we analyze the wind velocity for the individual months and determine the turbine performance in terms of torque for the average wind velocities of Dhaka and Cox’s Bazar stations.</span>

文摘In accordance with the principle of similarity in geology and topography, the Vs^30 (the average shear-velocity down to a 30m depth below the surface) approximation of sites is acquired by correlation between Vs^30 and slopes after calculating the maximum slope of topography using the 30-sec Chinese Mainland DEM (Digital Elevation Model) data set. Site-amplification factors are then quantified with Vs^30 and applied to the ShakeMap system developed by this study to revise ground-motion amplitudes on bedrock estimated from empirical relationships. Finally, the distribution of ground motion parameters on the surface is obtained. This article also introduces the calculation process, calculation models of the ShakeMap systems and related software systems. In conclusion, certain examples indicate that the ShakeMap system is feasible in the Chinese Mainland.

文摘The spray behaviors of the combined trapezoid spray tray(CTST) have a significant effect on the gas-liquid interface. In this paper, the spray process of CTST in a column, 570 mm in diameter, was experimentally investigated by using a high-speed camera, and a theoretical model of the average droplet size was established according to the unstable wave theory. The results demonstrated that gas velocity passing through the hole is the key factor affecting the spray angle, which increases gradually with an increase in the gas velocity. When the gas velocity exceeds 7.5 m/s, the spray angle becomes stable at around 55°. The average flow velocity of the liquid sheet at the spray-hole increases significantly with an increase in the gas velocity, and decreases slightly with an increase in the liquid flow rate; moreover, it increases from the bottom of spray hole upward to the top. The density of liquid drops distribution in the spray area can be described by the RosinRammler function. In addition, the liquid drops are mainly concentrated in the area of spray angle ranging from 20° to 40°, and they gradually become uniform with the increase in the gas velocity and the liquid flow rate. The average liquid drop size deceases with an increase in the gas velocity, and increases slightly with an increasing liquid flow rate. In the normal working range, the average liquid drop size is about 1.0 mm to 2.5 mm in diameter.

文摘Non-stationary characteristic in nature wind has a great effect on buffeting performance of long-span bridges.The influence of key parameters in non-stationary wind velocity models on nonlinear buffeting responses of a super long-span suspension bridge was investigated in this paper.Firstly,four non-stationary wind velocity models are established by combing the time-varying average wind velocity with an exponential function and the fluctuating wind velocity with four modulation functions,respectively.These non-stationary wind velocity models have obvious non-stationary characteristics and then are validated by the classical power spectrum densities.Finally,three displacement responses of the bridge deck under four different independent variables ofβin the exponential function and four modulation functions were compared,respectively.Results show that the turbulence intensities using two non-uniform modulation functions(NMF)are larger than those using uniform modulation functions(uMF).Moreover,the root mean square(RMS)values of three displacement responses increase with the decrease ofβ.Besides,the RMS values of three displacement under two NMFs are larger than those under two uMFs,and their RMS values under the second uMF are the smallest.

文摘The accuracy of an ultrasonic flowmeter meaurement depends on the profile-linear average velocity. But this velocity in the transition region is not available at the present. In this article, the velocity in the transition region in pipes is studied by experimental methods. The Particle Image Velocimetry ( PIV ) is used to measure the flow field in the transition region in pipes, and the measured results from PIV are in good agreement with the Westerwell's experimental data. Based on the experimental data of PIV, the curves of the profile-linear average velocity in the transition region against the Reynolds number in the range from 2 000 to 20 000 are obtained, and it is shown that the coefficient k is constant when the Reynolds number is in the range of 2 000-2 400 and 6 000-20 000, and the coefficient k is increasing when the Reynolds number is in the range of 2 400-6 000. The results of this article can be used to improve the measurement accuracy of the ultrasonic flowmeters and as a theoretical basis for the research on the transition flow.

文摘Si-based thermoelectric(TE)materials are exhibiting remarkable perspectives in self-energized applications with their special advantages.However,the relatively high total thermal conductivity(κ)prevents their TE enhancement.Here,a strategy of co-compositing dual oxides was implemented for enhancing the TE properties of p-type Si_(80)Ge_(20) bulks.Composited Ga2O_(3) was demonstrated to enhance the power factor(PF)due to the crystallization-induced effect of produced Ga by decomposition on SiGe matrix.Associating with compositing SiO_(2) aerogel(a-SiO_(2))powder,not only introduced the fine amorphous inclusions and decreased the grain size of host matrix,but also various nano morphologies were formed,i.e.,nano inclusions,precipitations,twin boundaries(TBs),and faults.Combining with the eutectic Ge,hierarchical scattering centers impeded the phonon transport comprehensively(decreasing the phonon group velocity(a v)and relaxation time)for reducing the lattice-induced thermal conductivity(lκ).As a result,a minimumκof 2.38 W·m^(−1)·K^(−1) was achieved,which is significantly dropped by 32.6%in contrast with that of the pristine counterpart.Ultimately,a maximal dimensionless figure of merit(ZT)of 0.9 was achieved at 600℃,which is better than those of most corresponding oxide-composited Si-based bulks.
文摘The hydrodynamic characteristics of a rectangular gas-driven inverse liquid-solid fluidized bed(GDFB)using particles of different diameters and densities were investigated in detail.Rising gas bubbles cause a liquid upflow in the riser portion,enabling a liquid downflow that causes an inverse fluidization in the downer portion.Four flow regimes(fixed bed regime,initial fluidization regime,complete fluidization regime,and circulating fluidization regime)and three transition gas velocities(initial fluidization gas velocity,minimum fluidization gas velocity,and circulating fluidization gas velocity)were identified via visual observation and by monitoring the variations in the pressure drop.The axial local bed voidage(e)of the downer first decreases and then increases with the increase of the gas velocity.Both the liquid circulation velocity and the average particle velocity inside the downer increase with the increase of the gas velocity in the riser,but decrease with the particle loading.An empirical formula was proposed to successfully predict the Richardson-Zaki index“n”,and the predicted e obtained from this formula has a±5%relative error when compared with the experimental e.
