A large-scale pop-up structure occurs at the front of the northern Dabashan thrust belt (NDTB), bound by the NNE-dipping Chengkou fault to the south, and the SSW-dipping Gaoqiao fault to the north. The pop-up structure shows different features along its strike as a direct reflection of the intensity of tectonic" activity. To the northwest, the structure is characterized by a two-directional thrust system forming a positive flower-like structure. In contrast, the southeastern part is composed of the vertical Chengkou fault and a series of N-directed backthrusts, showing a semi-flower-like structure. We present results from Ar-Ar dating of syntectonic microthermal metamorphic sericite which show that the Chengkou fault experienced intense deformation during the mid-Mesozoic Yanshanian epoch (about 143.3 Ma), causing rapid uplift and thrusting of the northern Dabashan thrust belt. During the propagation of this thrust, a series of backthrusts formed because of the obstruction from the frontier of Dabashan thrust belt, leading to the development of the pop-up structure. 展开更多

On Jan.31 of 2010,the Suining earthquake occurred at Suining City whch is located the center of Sichuan Basin. It is unusual for the strong earthquake to occur at the center of Sichuan Basin with a stable geotectonic environment and a low-level historical seismicity. The macro-epicenter of the earthquake is located at Moxi town of Suining city,Sichuan province,China. The earthquake intensity of the epicenter area is degree VII,and the long axis of the isoseismal line trends in NE orientation. The Suining earthquake caused the collapse or destruction of 460 family houses. The earthquake focal mechanism solution and records of the near-field seismographic stations showed the earthquake occurred at the reverse fault at a depth 34 km.Based on the waveform and focal mechanism,we consider the Suning earthquake is triggered by the reverse fault and not by the gravitational collapse or man-made explosive sources.Basing on seismic refraction profile and borehole,we consider that the earthquake is triggered by the backthrust fault of Moxi anticline rooted in detachments at a depth 3-4 km.Furthermore,we infer that tectonic mechanism of the Suining(Ms5.0) Earthquake is driven by the horizontal crustal shortening and stress adjustment on a shallow detachment after the Wenchuan(Ms 8.0) earthquake. 展开更多

Seafloor irregularities influence rupture behavior along the subducting slab and in the overriding plate, thus affecting earthquake cycles.Whether seafloor irregularities increase the likelihood of large earthquakes in a subduction zone remains contested, partially due to focus put either on fault development or on rupture pattern. Here,we simulate a subducting slab with a seafloor irregularity and the resulting deformation pattern of the overriding plate using the discrete element method. Our simulations illustrate the rupture along three major fault systems:megathrust, splay and backthrust faults. Our results show different rupture dimensions of earthquake events varying from tens to ca.140 km.Our results suggest that the recurrence interval of megathrust events with rupture length of ca.100 km is ca.140 years, which is overall comparable to the paleoseismic records at the Mentawai area of the Sumatran zone.We further propose the coseismic slip amounts decrease and interseismic slip amounts increase from the surface downwards gradually. We conclude that the presence of seafloor irregularities significantly affects rupture events along the slab as well as fault patterns in the overriding plate. 展开更多
