The quadrature modulator is a crucial block in transmitters that upconverts baseband signals to theRadio Frequency(RF)band of interest using local oscillator frequencies. In this paper,non-ideal factors thatinfluence the performance of the quadrature modulator are considered, and solutions are accordingly taken inthe quadrature modulator design.A high-linear RF quadrature modulator with improved sideband suppressionand carrier leakage performance is presented in this work. The quadrature modulator implemented in the0.18-μm SiGe process uses the current bleeding technique to improve the general performance of the doublebalanced active Gilbert mixers. An on-chip prescaler followed by two cascaded limiting amplifiers is designed toprovide accurate quadrature local oscillator signals.Predrivers at quadrature baseband signal input ports areproposed to eliminate DC offsets. The measured sideband suppression achieves a performance of better than−43 dBc and carrier leakage is less than−38 dBm over the output RF frequency range of 30 MHz to 2.15 GHz.The output 1 dB compression point equals 11.4 dBm at 800 MHz. 展开更多

A dual-band direct-conversion WLAN transceiver baseband compliant with the IEEE 802.11 a/b/g standards is described. Several critical techniques for receiver DC offset compensation and transmitter carrier leakage rejection calibration are presented that enable the direct-conversion architecture to meet all WLAN specifications. The receiver baseband VGA provides 62 dB gain range with steps of 2 dB and a DC offset cancellation circuit is introduced to remove the offset from layout and self-mixing. The calibration loop achieves constant high-pass pole when gain changes; and a fast response time by programming the pole to 1 MHz during preamble and to 30 kHz during receiving data. The transmitter baseband employs an auto-calibration loop with on-chip AD and DA to suppress the carrier leakage, and AD can be powered down after calibration to save power consumption. The chip consumes 17.52 mA for RX baseband VGA and DCOC, and 8.3 mA for TX carrier leakage calibration (5.88 mA after calibration) from 2.85 V supply. Implemented in a 0.35μm SiGe technology, they occupy 0.68 mm^2 and 0.18 mma die size respectively. 展开更多

A carrier leakage calibration and compensation technique based on digital baseband for a wideband wireless communication transceiver is proposed. The digital baseband transmits a calibration signal, samples the signal which passes through the transmitter path and the calibration loop in the RF chip, measures the carrier leakage by analyzing the sampled data and compensates it. Compared with a self-calibration technique in the RF chip, the proposed technique saves area and power consumption for the wireless local area network (WLAN) solution. This technique has been successfully used for 802.1 In system and satisfies the requirement of the standard by achieving over 50 dB carrier leakage suppression. 展开更多

In this paper, we present a simple thermal model of Vertical-Cavity Surface-Emitting Laser (VCSEL) light-current (L1) characteristics based on the rate-equation. The model can be implemented in conventional SPICE-like circuit simulators, including HSPICE, and be used to simulate the key features of VCSEL. The results compare favorably with experimental data from a device reported in the literature. The simple empirical model is especially suitable for Computer Aided Design (CAD), and greatly simplifies the design of optical communication systems. 展开更多
