The coupled magnetorheological (MR) damping system addressed in this paper contains rubber spring and magnetorheological damper. The device inherits the damping merits of both the rubber spring and the magnetorheological damper. Here a fractional-order constitutive equation is introduced to study the viscoelasticity of the combined damper. An introduction to the definitions of fractional calculus, and the transfer function representation of a fractional-order system are given. The fractional-order system model of a magnetorheological vibration platform is set up using fractional calculus, and the function of displacement is presented. It is indicated that the fractional-order constitutive equation and the transfer function are feasible and effective means for investigating of magnetorheological vibration device. © 2014 Chinese Association of Automation. 展开更多

This work studied the microstructure, mechanical properties and damping properties of Mg_(95.34)Ni_(2)Y_(2.66) and Mg_(95.34)Zn_(1)Ni_(1)Y_(2.66)alloys systematically. The difference in the evolution of the long-period stacked ordered(LPSO)phase in the two alloys during heat treatment was the focus. The morphology of the as-cast Mg_(95.34)Ni_(2)Y_(2.66)presented a disordered network. After heat treatment at 773 K for 2 hours, the eutectic phase was integrated into the matrix, and the LPSO phase maintained the 18R structure. As Zn partially replaced Ni,the crystal grains became rounded in the cast alloy, and lamellar LPSO phases and more solid solution atoms were contained in the matrix after heat treatment of the Mg_(95.34)Zn_(1)Ni_(1)Y_(2.66)alloy.Both Zn and the heat treatment had a significant effect on damping.Obvious dislocation internal friction peaks and grain boundary internal friction peaks were found after temperature-dependent damping of the Mg_(95.34)Ni_(2)Y_(2.66)and Mg_(95.34)Zn_(1)Ni_(1)Y_(2.66)alloys.After heat treatment, the dislocation peak was significantly increased, especially in the alloy Mg_(95.34)Ni_(2)Y_(2).66.The annealed Mg_(95.34)Ni_(2)Y_(2.66)alloy with a rod-shaped LPSO phase exhibited a good damping performance of 0.14 atε=10^(−3),which was due to the difference between the second phase and solid solution atom content. These factors also affected the dynamic modulus of the alloy. The results of this study will help in further development of high-damping magnesium alloys. 展开更多

In this study, the damping responses of uniform soil,equi-proportional fly ash,and local soil as a single unit were investigated. The large-strain cyclic triaxial tests were performed for the specimen compacted at the desired density(95%e99%of maximum dry density). The compacted specimens were tested under the loading frequency of 0.3e1 Hz with medium confinement of 70e100 kPa.Also, the unsymmetrical behavior of the hysteresis loop was analyzed using three different damping estimation approaches,i.e.symmetric hysteresis loop(SHL),asymmetric hysteresis loop(ASHL),and the modified American Society for Testing and Materials(ASTM)method. The outcome of the study shows for fly ash, local soil, and layered soil-ash,the ASHL technique has the highest damping value, followed by ASTM and then the SHL approach. The specimens prepared under high density and subjected to high confinement show low damping values. However, the specimens tested at high frequency exhibits high damping behavior.Similarly, the damping value of fly ash determined using the SHL and ASHL methods has a similar profile and reaches a maximum at 1%shear strain value before decreasing. The composite stratified deposit exhibits more dependency on relative compaction, confining pressure, and less on loading frequency.Based on the results,it is highly recommended to use the ASHL approach, especially under large strain conditions irrespective of soil type. The maximum damping ratio of stratified deposits is always in between the damping ratio of local soil and fly ash.The damping ratio of stratified soil and local soil is slightly larger than that of the other soils, although the damping ratio of fly ash is equivalent to that of the sand and clayey soil. These results may be helpful in the accurate determination of the damping properties of the layered soil-ash system that is required in the seismic response analysis. 展开更多

A fractional nonlinear system with power damping term is introduced to study the forced vibration system in order to solve the resonance and bifurcation problems between grinding wheel and steel bar during robot grinding. The robot, grinding wheel and steel bar are reduced to a spring-damping second-order system model. The implicit function equations of vibration amplitude of the dynamic system with coulomb friction damping, linear damping, square damping and cubic damping are obtained by average method. The stability of the system is analyzed and explained, and the stability condition of the system is proposed. Then, the amplitude-frequency characteristic curves of the system under different fractional differential orders, nonlinear stiffness parameters, fractional differential term coefficients and external excitation amplitude are analyzed. It is shown that the fractional differential term in the dynamic system is the damping characteristic. Then the influence of four kinds of damping on the vibration amplitude of the system under the same parameter is investigated and it is proved that the cubic damping suppresses the vibration of the system to the maximum extent. Finally, based on the idea that the equilibrium point of the system is the constant part of the Fourier series expansion term, the bifurcation behavior caused by the change of damping parameters in linear damping, square damping and cubic damping systems with different values of fractional differential order is investigated. 展开更多

Flexible damping technology considering aseismic materials and aseismic structures seems be a good solution for engineering structures. In this study,a constrained damping structure for underground tunnel lining, using a rubber-sand-concrete(RSC)as the aseismic material,is proposed. The aseismic performances of constrained damping structure were investigated by a series of hammer impact tests. The damping layer thickness and shape effects on the aseismic performance such as effective duration and acceleration amplitude of time-domain analysis, composite loss factor and damping ratio of the transfer function analysis, and total vibration level of octave spectrum analysis were discussed. The hammer impact tests revealed that the relationship between the aseismic performance and damping layer thickness was not linear, and that the hollow damping layer had a better aseismic performance than the flat damping layer one.The aseismic performances of constrained damping structure under different seismicity magnitudes and geological conditions were investigated. The effects of the peak ground acceleration(PGA)and tunnel overburden depth on the aseismic performances such as the maximum principal stress and equivalent plastic strain(PEEQ)were discussed. The numerical results show the constrained damping structure proposed in this paper has a good aseismic performance, with PGA in the range(0.2-1.2)g and tunnel overburden depth in the range of 0-300 m. 展开更多

The AFM probe in tapping mode is a continuous process of energy dissipation, from moving away from to intermittent contact with the sample surfaces. At present, studies regarding the energy dissipation mechanism of this continuous process have only been reported sporadically, and there are no systematic explanations or experimental verifications of the energy dissipation mechanism in each stage of the continuous process. The quality factors can be used to characterize the energy dissipation in TM-AFM systems. In this study, the vibration model of the microcantilever beam was established, coupling the vibration and damping effects of the microcantilever beam. The quality factor of the vibrating microcantilever beam under damping was derived, and the air viscous damping when the probe is away from the sample and the air squeeze film damping when the probe is close to the sample were calculated. In addition, the mechanism of the damping effects of different shapes of probes at different tip–sample distances was analyzed. The accuracy of the theoretical simplified model was verified using both experimental and simulation methods.A clearer understanding of the kinetic characteristics and damping mechanism of the TM-AFM was achieved by examining the air damping dissipation mechanism of AFM probes in the tapping mode, which was very important for improving both the quality factor and the imaging quality of the TM-AFM system. This study’s research findings also provided theoretical references and experimental methods for the future study of the energy dissipation mechanism of micro-nano-electromechanical systems. 展开更多

In this study,a novel equivalent damping ratio model that is suitable for reinforced concrete(RC)structures considering cyclic degradation behavior is developed, and a new equivalent linearization analysis method for implementing the proposed equivalent damping ratio model for use in seismic damage evaluation is presented. To this end,Ibarra’s peak-oriented model, which incorporates an energy-based degradation rule,is selected for representing hysteretic behavior of RC structure, and the optimized equivalent damping for predicting the maximum displacement response is presented by using the empirical method,in which the effect of cyclic degradation is considered. Moreover, the relationship between the hysteretic energy dissipation of the inelastic system and the elastic strain energy of the equivalent linear system is established so that the proposed equivalent linear system can be directly integrated with the Park-Ang seismic model to implement seismic damage evaluation.Due to the simplicity of the equivalent linearization method, the proposed method provides an efficient and reliable way of obtaining comprehensive insight into the seismic performance of RC structures. The verification demonstrates the validity of the proposed method. 展开更多

Lattice metamaterials based on three-period minimum surface(TPMS)are an effective means to achieve lightweight and high-strength materials which are widely used in various fields such as aerospace and ships. However, its vibration and noise reduction, and damping properties have not been fully studied. Therefore,in this study, the TPMS structures with parameterization were designed by the method of surface migration, and the TPMS structures with high forming quality was manufactured by laser powder bed fusion(LPBF).The mechanical properties and energy absorption characteristics of the beam and TPMS structures were studied and compared by quasi-static compression. The modal shapes of the beam lattice structures and TPMS structures were obtained by the free modal analysis, and the damping properties of two structures were obtained by modal tests. For the two structures after heat treatment with the same porosity of 70%,the yield strength of the beam lattice structure reaches 40.76 MPa,elastic modulus is 20.38 GPa,the energy absorption value is 32.23 MJ·m^(-3),the damping ratio is 0.52%.The yield strength, elastic modulus, energy absorption value, and damping ratio of the TPMS structure are 50.74 MPa,25.37 GPa,47.34 MJ·m^(-3),and 0.99%,respectively.The results show that TPMS structures exhibit more excellent mechanical properties and energy absorption, better damping performance, and obvious advantages in structural load and vibration and noise reduction compared with the beam lattice structures under the same porosity. 展开更多

The aeroelastic stability associated with the acoustic wave propagation characteristics of transonic rotor blades was numerically investigated in this study. The influence of the vibration frequency on the aerodynamic damping of the first bending mode was primarily considered at different speeds, including both work and stall points. We found that the state of acoustic wave propagation associated with aeroelastic instability is closely related to rotational speed. At low speeds near stall points, the risk of aeroelastic instability is confined to the upstream cut-off state. However,at high speeds near stall points, aeroelastic instability may occur in both the downstream cut-off state and the acoustic wave propagation state of the upstream cut-off frequency, further expanding the range of the acoustic wave propagation state in which aeroelastic instability can arise. The research findings show that for suction surfaces, aerodynamic work is affected not only by acoustic wave propagation characteristics, but also by shock waves, radial flow, and reflux in the flow field. However, for pressure surfaces, the acoustic wave propagation characteristics play a significant role. When aeroelastic instability occurs, negative damping predominantly arises from the pressure surface. To investigate why lower-order modes are more prone to aeroelastic instability, specific simulations were conducted for the first bending and twisting modes under different operating conditions in the downstream cut-on state. When the vibration frequency significantly exceeds the downstream cutoff frequency, the blade phase is minimally influenced by acoustic wave propagation characteristics, and the rotor is aeroelastically stable in these phases.Simultaneously, there is an approximately linear increase in the unsteady pressure amplitude with increasing vibration frequency, and the aerodynamic work is predominantly influenced by the unsteady pressure amplitude. 展开更多

The problems associated with vibrations of viaducts and low-frequency structural noise radiation caused by train excitation continue to increase in importance.A new floating-slab track vibration isolator-non-obstructive particle damping-phononic crystal vibration isolator is proposed herein, which uses the particle damping vibration absorption technology and bandgap vibration control theory. The vibration reduction performance of the NOPD-PCVI was analyzed from the perspective of vibration control. The paper explores the structure-borne noise reduction performance of the NOPD-PCVIs installed on different bridge structures under varying service conditions encountered in practical engineering applications. The load transferred to the bridge is obtained from a coupled train-FST-bridge analytical model considering the different structural parameters of bridges. The vibration responses are obtained using the finite element method, while the structural noise radiation is simulated using the frequency-domain boundary element method.Using the particle swarm optimization algorithm, the parameters of the NOPD-PCVI are optimized so that its frequency bandgap matches the dominant bridge structural noise frequency range. The noise reduction performance of the NOPD-PCVIs is compared to the steel-spring isolation under different service conditions. 展开更多

The damping properties were improved by preparing Al matrix composites reinforced with glass cenospheres through the pressure infiltration method.Transmission electron microscopy and scanning electron microscopy were employed to characterize the microstructure of the composites. The low-frequency damping properties were examined by using a dynamic mechanical thermal analyzer, aiming at exploring the changing trend of damping capacity with strain, temperature, and frequency. The findings demonstrated that the damping value rose as temperature and strain increased, with a maximum value of 0.15.Additionally,the damping value decreased when the frequency increased.Dislocation damping under strain and interfacial damping under temperature served as the two primary damping mechanisms. The increase in the density of dislocation strong pinning points following heat treatment reduced the damping value, which was attributed to the heat treatment enhancement of the interfacial bonding force of the composites. 展开更多

The levered-dual response(LEDAR)Coulomb-damped system attains near resonant vibration isolation by differential preloads/offsets in linear springs. It takes the advantages of both the preloads/offsets in linear springs and the guiderail friction for realizing different levels of vibration isolation. The isolation capacities are investigated on the strategies with both the horizontal and vertical guiderails, with the horizontal rail only, and without guiderails. The compressive preloads generally result in the consumption of most of the initial excitation energy so as to overcome the potential threshold. The isolation onsets at the frequency ratio of 1∓0.095 on the left-hand side(LHS)and the right-hand side(RHS)of the lever are relative to the load plate connector. The observed near resonant isolation thus makes the LEDAR system a candidate for the isolation of the mechanical systems about resonance while opening a path for simultaneous harvesterisolation functions and passive functions at extreme frequencies. 展开更多

SiC particles were added to the Mg97Zn1Y2 alloy to improve its mechanical properties and damping properties. The microstructure, mechanical properties, and strain amplitude dependence of high-damping and high-strength SiC/Mg97Zn1Y2 magnesium matrix composites were analyzed. The strain amplitude-dependent damping of SiC/Mg97Zn1Y2 composites and the effect of SiC on this property were discussed herein. In anelastic damping, the strain amplitude-dependent damping curves of the composites were mainly divided into two sections, dominated by the G-L model. When the strain amplitude reaches a certain value, the dislocation motion inside the matrix becomes complicated. Moreover, the damping of the material could not be explained using the G-L model, and a new damping model related to microplastic deformation was proposed. In the anelastic damping stage, with the increase in the amount of the added SiC particles, the damping performance first increases and then decreases. Moreover, the damping value of the composite material is larger than that of the matrix alloy. In the microplastic deformation stage, the damping properties of the composites and matrix alloys considerably increase with the strain amplitude. 展开更多

Base isolators used in buildings provide both a good acceleration reduction and structural vibration control structures. The base isolators may lose their damping capacity over time due to environmental or dynamic effects. This deterioration of them requires the determination of the maintenance and repair needs and is important for the long-termisolator life.In this study,an artificial intelligence prediction model has been developed to determine the damage and maintenance-repair requirements of isolators as a result of environmental effects and dynamic factors over time. With the developed model, the required damping capacity of the isolator structure was estimated and compared with the previously placed isolator capacity, and the decrease in the damping property was tried to be determined. For this purpose,a data set was created by collecting the behavior of structures with single degrees of freedom(SDOF),different stiffness, damping ratio and natural period isolated from the foundation under far fault earthquakes. The data is divided into 5 different damping classes varying between 10%and 50%.Machine learning model was trained in damping classes with the data on the structure’s response to random seismic vibrations. As a result of the isolator behavior under randomly selected earthquakes, the recorded motion and structural acceleration of the structure against any seismic vibration were examined, and the decrease in the damping capacity was estimated on a class basis. The performance loss of the isolators, which are separated according to their damping properties, has been tried to be determined, and the reductions in the amounts to be taken into account have been determined by class. In the developed prediction model, using various supervised machine learning classification algorithms, the classification algorithm providing the highest precision for the model has been decided. When the results are examined,it has been determined that the damping of the isolator structure with the machine learning method is predicted successfully at a level exceeding 96%,and it is an effective method in deciding whether there is a decrease in the damping capacity. 展开更多

Hunting stability is an important performance criterion in railway vehicles. This study proposes an incorporation of a bio-inspired limb-like structure(LLS)-based nonlinear damping into the motor suspension system for traction units to improve the nonlinear critical speed and hunting stability of high-speed trains(HSTs).Initially,a vibration transmission analysis is conducted on a HST vehicle and a metro vehicle that suffered from hunting motion to explore the effect of different motor suspension systems from on-track tests.Subsequently,a simplified lateral dynamics model of an HST bogie is established to investigate the influence of the motor suspension on the bogie hunting behavior. The bifurcation analysis is applied to optimize the motor suspension parameters for high critical speed. Then, the nonlinear damping of the bio-inspired LLS,which has a positive correlation with the relative displacement, can further improve the modal damping of hunting motion and nonlinear critical speed compared with the linear motor suspension system.Furthermore,a comprehensive numerical model of a high-speed train, considering all nonlinearities,is established to investigate the influence of different types of motor suspension. The simulation results are well consistent with the theoretical analysis. The benefits of employing nonlinear damping of the bio-inspired LLS into the motor suspension of HSTs to enhance bogie hunting stability are thoroughly validated. 展开更多

Magnetic films with low Gilbert damping are crucial for magnonic devices, which provide a promising platform forrealizing ultralow-energy devices. In this study, low Gilbert damping and coercive field were observed in Bi/In-dopedyttrium iron garnet(BiIn:YIG)thin films. The BiIn:YIG(444)films were deposited onto different substrates using pulsedlaser deposition.Low coercivity(<1 Oe)with saturation magnetization of 125.09 emu/cc was achieved along the in-planedirection of BiIn:YIG film. The values of Gilbert damping and inhomogeneous broadening of ferromagnetic resonance inBiIn:YIG films were obtained to be as low as 4.05×10^(-4)and 5.62 Oe,respectively. In addition to low damping, the giantFaraday rotation angles(up to 2.9×10^(4)deg/cm)were also observed in the BiIn:YIG film.By modifying the magneticstructure and coupling effect between Bi^(3+)and Fe^(3+)of Bi:YIG,doped In^(3+)plays a key role on variation of the magneticproperties. The low damping and giant Faraday effect made the BiIn:YIG film an appealing candidate for magnonic andmagneto-optical devices. 展开更多

Virtual synchronous generators(VSGs)are widely introduced to the renewable power generation, the variablespeed pumped storage units, and so on,as a promising gridforming solution. It is noted that VSGs can provide virtual inertia for frequency support, but the larger inertia would worsen the synchronization stability, referring to keeping synchronization with the grid during voltage dips. Thus, this paper presents a transient damping method of VSGs for enhancing the synchronization stability during voltage dips.It is revealed that the loss of synchronization(LOS)of VSGs always accompanies with the positive frequency deviation and the damping is the key factor to remove LOS when the equilibrium point exists. In order to enhance synchronization stability during voltage dips, the transient damping is proposed, which is generated by the frequency deviation in active power loop.Additionally, the proposed method can realize seamless switching between normal state and grid fault. Moreover, detailed control design for transient damping gain is given to ensure the synchronization stability under different inertia requirements during voltage dips. Finally, the experimental results are presented to validate the analysis and the effectiveness of the improved transient damping method. 展开更多

At the same time, the addition of nanosilica not only effectively reduces the critical pore size and average pore size of the cement composite material, but also exhibits good synergistic effects with carbon nanotubes, which can significantly optimize the pore structure. Finally, a rationalization suggestion for the co-doping of nanosilica and carbon nanotubes was given to achieve a significant increase in the flexural strength, compressive strength and loss factor of cement-based materials. 展开更多
