The effect of a vertical diffusion scheme over a stratocumulus topped boundary layer (STBL) was investigated using the YONU AGCM (Yonsei University Atmospheric General Circulation Model). To consider the impact of clouds on the turbulence production, the turbulence mixing term, driven by radiative cooling at the cloud top, is implemented as an extended non-local diffusion scheme. In the model with this new scheme, the STBL parameterization significantly influences the lower atmosphere over the tropical and subtropical regions. Consideration of the turbulent mixing within the cloud layer leads to continuous stratocumulus formation. The cloud-top radiative cooling tends to favor more rapid entrainment and produces top-down turbulent mixing. This cooling develops a mixed layer without initiation of deep convection by surface fluxes. Variations in thermodynamical and dynamical features are produced by planetary boundary layer (PBL) cloud development. The simulated stratocumulus induces more mixing of heat and moisture due to the cloud forcing. Over STBL regions, the lower boundary layer becomes warmer and drier. It also weakens vertical motion and zonal trade winds in the eastern Pacific, which indicates that stratocumulus cloud cover plays a role in weakening the Walker circulation; that is, cloud cover damps the tropical circulation. 展开更多

In 2019,the operational Global Regional Assimilation and Prediction System-Tropical Cyclone Model(GRAPES-TCM)was updated by adopting the characteristic parameters in the official real-time released TC data of CMA,introducing the horizontal sixth-order diffusion scheme and adjusting the operational flowchart. In the case of the Super Typhoon Lekima, the model exhibits a reliable prediction ability for the type of tropical cyclone(TC)with northwestern tracking. The track and intensity forecasts in 2019 are significantly better than those over the past five years on average. The updated model can provide a skillful forecast of landfall position and rapid weakening process. Moreover, the precipitation pattern is close to the observation.TC forecast in 2019 shows that the updated GRAPES-TCM has a smaller track error than that of the previous year, and the 24 h intensity forecasting ability is improved. 展开更多

In this paper,we consider the multi-dimensional asymptotic preserving unified gas kinetic scheme for gray radiative transfer equations on distorted quadrilateral meshes.Different from the former scheme [J.Comput.Phys.285(2015),265-279] on uniform meshes,in this paper,in order to obtain the boundary fluxes based on the framework of unified gas kinetic scheme(UGKS),we use the real multi-dimensional reconstruction for the initial data and the macro-terms in the equation of the gray transfer equations. We can prove that the scheme is asymptotic preserving, and especially for the distorted quadrilateral meshes,a nine-point scheme [SIAM J.SCI.COMPUT.30(2008),1341-1361] for the diffusion limit equations is obtained, which is naturally reduced to standard five-point scheme for the orthogonal meshes. The numerical examples on distorted meshes are included to validate the current approach. 展开更多
