There are many documented sex differences in the clinical course, symptom expression profile, and treatment response of Parkinson’s disease, creating additional challenges for patient management.Although subthalamic nucleus deep brain stimulation is an established therapy for Parkinson’s disease, the effects of sex on treatment outcome are still unclear. The aim of this retrospective observational study, was to examine sex differences in motor symptoms, nonmotor symptoms, and quality of life after subthalamic nucleus deep brain stimulation.Outcome measures were evaluated at 1 and 12 months post-operation in 90 patients with Parkinson’s disease undergoing subthalamic nucleus deep brain stimulation aged 63.00±8.01 years(55 men and 35 women).Outcomes of clinical evaluations were compared between sexes via a Student’s t-test and within sex via a paired-sample t-test,and generalized linear models were established to identify factors associated with treatment efficacy and intensity for each sex.We found that subthalamic nucleus deep brain stimulation could improve motor symptoms in men but not women in the on-medication condition at 1 and 12 months post-operation.Restless legs syndrome was alleviated to a greater extent in men than in women.Women demonstrated poorer quality of life at baseline and achieved less improvement of quality of life than men after subthalamic nucleus deep brain stimulation.Furthermore,Hoehn-Yahr stage was positively correlated with the treatment response in men, while levodopa equivalent dose at 12 months post-operation was negatively correlated with motor improvement in women. In conclusion, women received less benefit from subthalamic nucleus deep brain stimulation than men in terms of motor symptoms,non-motor symptoms, and quality of life.We found sex-specific factors,i.e.,Hoehn-Yahr stage and levodopa equivalent dose, that were related to motor improvements. These findings may help to guide subthalamic nucleus deep brain stimulation patient selection, prognosis, and stimulation programming for optimal therapeutic efficacy in Parkinson’s disease. 展开更多

Extensive oedometer tests and physical tests have been conducted on remolded and reconstituted marine soils with different initial water contents and liquid limits. The oedometer test data can be well fitted with a straight line in the bilogarithmic ln(1+ e ) ~ lg p plot. The initial effective stress corresponding to the initial void ratio is determined by extrapolation of the bilogarithmic compression line. This new way of extrapolating oedometer test data to the initial void ratio overcomes the difficulty of measuring the residual effective stress of soils in the remolded state. The initial stable compression line of ocean floor deposits under different deposition environments corresponds to the compression line at the sensitivity equal to one. This initial stable compression line obtained in this study is consistent with the available compression line at the sensitivity equal to one which is proposed based on the experimental data of remolded undrained strength and the theoretical concept of Cam clay critical state line. 展开更多

We investigate the free energy relation for a system contacting with a non-Markovian heat bath and find that the validity of the relation sensitively depends on the non-Markovian memory effect, which is especially related go the initial preparation effect. This memory effect drives the statistical distribution of the system out of the initial preparation, even if the system starts from an equilibrium state. This leads to the violation of the free energy relation. A possible way of eliminating this memory effect is proposed. 展开更多

The direct initiation of detonations in one-dimensional (1D) and two-dimensional (2D) cylindrical geometries is investigated through numerical simulations. In comparison of 1D and 2D simulations, it is found that cellular instability has a negative effect on the 2D initiation and makes it more difficult to initiate a sustaining 2D cylindrical detonation. This effect associates closely with the activation energy. For the lower activation energy, the 2D initiation of cylindrical detonations can be achieved through a subcritical initiation way. With increasing the activation energy, the 2D cylindrical detonation has increased difficulty in its initiation due to the presence of unreacted pockets behind the detonation front and usually requires rather larger source energy. 展开更多
