It was found that the apparent morphologies, substructures, and habit plane of packet martensite in high carbon steels are entirely different from that in low carbon steels; the substructures of packet martensite in high carbon steels possess fully twinned structure, while the substructures of individual coarse martensite plates in these steels bear both fully and partially twinned structures. The formation reason for apparent morphologies, substructures and two habit planes (i. e, { 111 }, and { 225}r) of high carbon martensite were discussed in detail. 展开更多

The as-quenched microstructures of low carbon steels were observed by scanning electron microscope, and the thin foil specimen was examined by transmission electron microscopy. It is found that the space morphology of low carbon martensite is not lath-like but thin sheet-like, which is designated as sheet-like martensite or packet thin sheet martensite. A three-dimensional model was presented. The reason for exhibiting two apparent morphologies, i.e. double contrast packet and simple contrast packet, in as-quenched low carbon steels was analyzed in detail. It is suggested that the data of martensitic habit plane measured by other procedures should be further inspected using optical metallographic method. The apparent morphologies of low carbon martensite confirm that its habit plane should be {557}_r, rather than {111}_r, {345}_r, nor {213}_r. 展开更多

The effects of austenitizing temperature on the morphologies and substructures of as-quenched microstructure were investigated by using 13 medium and high carbon steels. The formation reasons of various morphologies of martensite quenched at different austenitizing temperatures were also studied. The results show that the packet martensite in medium and high carbon steels quenched at higher austenitizing temperature is entirely different from that in as-quenched low carbon steels, which is still plate martensite, and not lath martensite. All the change laws of as-quenched microstructures in medium and high carbon steels are identical with an increase in austenitizing temperature, and the austenitizing temperature can merely change the combined morphology of martensitic platelets, but cannot alter the type of product of martensitic transformation in commercial steels. 展开更多

A wear-resistant steel was hot rolled at the same finish temperature, and subsequently treated with conventional reheat quenching and tempering process (RQ&T) and direct quenching and tempering process (DQ&T), respectively. The effect of direct quenching on the microstructure and mechanical properties was investigated in detail by using optical microscope, transmission electron microscope and scanning electron microscope equipped with electron backscattered diffraction. The results showed that the microstructures of both the RQ and DQ specimens were complex constituents of lath martensite and lower bainite. Compared with the RQ specimen, the lower bainite content in DQ specimen was much higher. Furthermore, the bainite in the DQ specimen extended into and segmented the prior austenite grains, which can decrease martensite packet size. The proportion of high-angle boundary in the DQ specimen was higher than that in the RQ specimen, which may improve the impact toughness. The carbides in DQ&_T specimen were much finer and distributed even dispersively because direct quenching can retain substantive defects which may provide more nucleation sites for carbide precipitation in the tempering process. Besides, the mechanical properties of DQ and DQ&T specimens were superior than those subjected to RQ and RQ&T processes, respectively. 展开更多

An NM400 wear-resistant steel was hot rolled and then the plates were heat-treated by direct quenching and tempering (DQT) and reheat quenching and tempering (RQT) techniques, respectively. The Charpy impact test was carried out with an instrumented Charpy impact tester. The microstructure and fracture surface were investiga-ted by a combination of optical microscopy, transmission electron microscopy and scanning electron microscopy methods. It was found that the impact toughness of DQT specimen was much higher than that of RQT specimen. The microstructure of both DQT and RQT specimens was characterized by a mixture of tempered lath martensite and lower hainite. The lower bainite in DQT specimen extended into prior austenite grains and the content was higher than that in RQT specimen. The lower bainite in DOT specimen improved the impact toughness by increasing the proportion of large-angle boundaries and relieving the stress concentration at the crack tip. A number of fine and dis-persed carbides in DQT specimen also contributed to the improvement of the impact toughness. 展开更多
