Based on the findings of a systematic literature search an elastic food... The aim of this paper is to describe the possibilities of analyzing human mastication. The development of a standardized food model is presented. Based on the findings of a systematic literature search an elastic food model was created with the aim of standardizing size and elastic properties. Three different eatable jellied products were chosen, created by a changing of the amount of gelatin (260 Blooms) related to the total mass of the standard jellied food. The different hardness were classified in soft, medium and hard, flavored identically, but stained with different colors: soft-green, medium-yellow, hard-red. A cylindrical form was chosen with a height of 1 cm and a diameter of 2 cm. A standard protocol for analyzing chewing patterns in men was created. The condylographic data off several patients are described in details to demonstrate the possible clinical implementation. The newly developed standard food model (SFM) showed the capability to serve in experimental settings to analyze human mastication, although only a few patients have been examined. In addition, strength and size of the newly developed SFM load the masticatory system in an extent;it should be possible to disclose subclinical symptoms of patients within a short time of examination. The diagnostic procedure of temporo-mandibular disorder (TMD) should be endorsed by this new method. The condylographic data created by a standardized protocol should have the ability to enhance the clinical functional analysis of patients previous to restorative dental procedures. 展开更多

Myositis ossificans (MO) is an extraskeletal tumor-like lesion with bone formation, and is relatively rare in the head and neck region. We report herein a clinicopathological analysis of MO associated with a muscle of mastication. The patient was a 70-year-old Japanese woman who presented with a tumorous mass in the right parotid area and no history of trauma. The surgically excised tumorous lesion consisted of proliferating fibroblastic cells with no atypia in the central portion, and a formation of trabecular osteoid and/or bony tissue in the peripheral portion as the so-called “zonal phenomenon”. The final histological diagnosis was MO, and the lesion was located in the posterior belly of the digastric muscle on computer tomography. A review of the literature showed that many cases of MO predominantly affected the medial pterygoid and masseter muscle and showed a history of previous trauma. The present case represents a rare case of nontraumatic MO in the uncommon location of the posterior belly of the digastric muscle. 展开更多

The filler-bitumen interaction mechanism is one of the most essential phases for comprehending the asphalt mixture's performance.However,despite numerous studies,in-depth knowledge of filler-bitumen reciprocity at a microscale level is yet to be ascertained.The goal of this research is to gain a better understanding of the fillerbitumen microscale interaction in terms of the synergy and coaction between the physicochemical and rheological performance of mastics due to filler inclusions.The rheological properties of two sustainable mastics,dolomite powder(DP)and lime kiln dust(LKD),together with a neat PEN 60/70 binder,were analysed based on a temperature sweep at elevated temperature conditions.Meanwhile,frequency sweep and multiple stress creep recovery(MSCR)tests were also conducted at pavement serviceability temperature using the dynamic shear rheometer(DSR).Physicochemical tests using a scanning electron microscope(SEM)and energy dispersive X-rays(EDX)were conducted to analyse the impact of parameters such as particle shape,grain size,texture,and chemical compositions.The DSR test results showcased how the incorporation of fillers in asphalt binder considerably improved the performance of the binder in terms of rutting and fatigue.Likewise,its strain and nonrecoverable compliance parameters were substantially reduced at higher filler and binder concentrations.Physical filler attributes of low rigden voids(R.V),high fineness modulus(FM),and high specific surface area(SSA)led to greater interfacial stiffness and elasticity in LKD mastics compared to DP mastics at different loading frequencies and temperature levels.The SEM/EDX results also indicated that the elemental calcium and carbon composition of each filler component,together with its grain morphology,strongly influenced its rheological performance. 展开更多

BACKGROUND Bruxism is a rhythmic masticatory muscle activity that occurs involuntarily in a non-physiologically functional state.There is a lack of research classifying the functional status of masticatory muscles in patients with different mandibular movement types(centric clenching or eccentric grinding)of bruxism.AIM To assess the differences of the masticatory muscle activity in patients with different types of bruxism.METHODS A total of 21 subjects with centric bruxism(CB)and 21 subjects with eccentric bruxism(ECB)were screened from college students according to a questionnaire and their tooth wear features.Sixteen subjects with no bruxism were also recruited.The surface electromyography(EMG)signals of the temporalis anterior(TA)and superficial masseter muscle(MM)were measured in different mandibular positions and during the chewing task.The EMG amplitude and chewing cycle duration parameters were then analyzed.RESULTS The CB group showed fewer muscle maximal motor units,with the MM being more pronounced,a higher proportion of muscle contractions to be recruited for the same load of chewing activity,and a longer chewing cycle.The ECB group showed more TA maximal motor units and higher MM activity on the nonworking side in unilateral chewing.CONCLUSION CB mainly affects the MM,and patients with CB show reduced masticatory muscle contraction efficiency and chewing cycle efficiency.ECB mainly affects the TA,and patients with ECB show enhanced contraction of non-functional lateral muscle bundles. 展开更多

To corroborate the hypothesis that mastication affects the motivation to get food, we examined the effects of dietary consistency on the development of meal anticipation in locomotor activity of rats subjected to restricted daily feeding (RF), in which food supply was restricted to a fixed time each day. RF of both liquid and solid meals produced anticipatory locomotor activity. However, the strength of the activity in rats subjected to RF of liquid meal was lower than that in rats subjected to RF of solid meal. These results suggest that the feeding-associated circadian oscillation that developed by feeding with liquid meal is less potent than that in the case of feeding with solid meal. Furthermore, mastication for digesting solid meal might be one of the factors that determine the strength of the feeding-associated circadian oscillation. 展开更多

The purpose of the present study was to examine the effect of the frequency of mastication on cerebral activation and task scores for computational tasks. Eleven healthy subjects participated in the present study (nine women, two men). Subjects carried out the Uchida-Kraepelin Test for 15 min before and after chewing tasteless gum for five minutes. The oxygenation of the left prefrontal cortex was monitored by near-infrared spectroscopy during the computational tasks. Task scores did not differ significantly according to chewing frequency (p > 0.05). Conversely, the oxygenation value measured after mastication at a chewing frequency of 110 times/minute (Hz) was significantly higher than that observed before mastication (p < 0.05). Meanwhile, before and after levels of oxygenation did not differ significantly for chewing frequencies of 30 Hz and 70 Hz (p > 0.05 for both). The results of the present study suggest that tasteless mastication does not enhance calculation performance, while a high mastication frequency demonstrates an influence on oxygenation. However, our study indicates that chewing tasteless gum per se does not increase cognitive performance. 展开更多

There is a clear indicati... In recent years, there was a debate about the effects of gum chewing on various aspects of cognitive functioning. In this review, the results of previous studies are presented and summarized. There is a clear indication that gum chewing can improve various aspects of cognitive functioning including memory, attention and both executive and intellectual functioning. However, there is also clear evidence that chewing gum during cognitive tasks can adversely affect task performance. Therefore, it can be concluded that the replication of (beneficial or detrimental) effects of gum chewing on cognition has been proven to be very difficult. Consequently, the robustness of reported effects of gum chewing on cognition has to be questioned. Suggestions for future research are given. 展开更多

The aim of this study was to evaluate whether partial removable denture use indeed leads to improved oral health related quality of life and masticatory function. Materials and Methods: Partially edentulous patients presenting for removable denture treatment at the Prosthodontics Service in the Hospital Affiliated to Kinshasa University (Democratic Republic of Congo) were assessed for enrolment in this study. After applying exclusion criteria, 378 patients were included in the study, and randomly assigned into 2 groups. Oral health related quality of life (OHIP-23) and mastication time (MaT), number of chewing cycles (MaC), mastication frequency (MaF), and the sizes of the peanut fragments (FraS) were compared in both groups. Statistical significance was set at p < 0.05. Results: The average MaC, MaT, MaF, and FraS were 119 (± SD 53.70), 86.75 (±SD 35.35), 1.38 (±SD 0.25), and 3.3 (±SD 3.25) for the denture group and 77.9 (±SD 23.9), 60.2 (±SD 17.91), 1.29 (±SD 0.15), and 1.5 (±SD 0.7) for the non-denture group, respectively. Conclusion: The overall oral health related quality of life was best in the non-denture than denture. 展开更多

Microparticles were prepare... In this study, a natural gum mastic was evaluated as a microencapsulating and matrixforming material for sustained drug release. Mastic was characterized for its physicochemical properties. Microparticles were prepared by oil-in-oil solvent evaporation method. Matrix tablets were prepared by wet and melt granulation techniques. Diclofenac sodium(DFS) and diltiazem hydrochloride(DLTZ) were used as model drugs. Mastic produced discrete and spherical microspheres with DLTZ and microcapsules with DFS. Particle size and drug loading of microparticles was in the range of 22–62 μm and 50–87%, respectively. Increase in mastic:drug ratio increased microparticle size, improved drug loading and decreased the drug release rate. Microparticles with gum: drug ratio of 2:1 could sustain DLTZ release up to 12 h and released 57% DFS in 12 h. Mastic produced tablets with acceptable pharmacotechnical properties. A 30% w/w of mastic in tablet could sustain DLTZ release for 5 h from wet granulation,and DFS release for 8 h and 11 h from wet and melt granulation, respectively. Results revealed that a natural gum mastic can be used successfully to formulate matrix tablets and microparticles for sustained drug release. 展开更多

Mastic gum is derived from the tree named Pistacia lentiscus that is grown only in Island Hios of Greek.Since Mastic was first reported to kill Helicobacter pylori(H.pylori)in 1998,there has been no further study to elucidate which component of mastic specifically shows the antimicrobial activity against H.pylori.In this study,we examined which component of mastic gum was responsible for anti-H.pylori activity.We prepared the essential oil of mastic gum and identified 20 constituents by GC–MS analysis.Ten standard components were assayed for anti-H.pylori activity,and it clarified that a-terpineol and(E)-methyl isoeugenol showed the anti-H.pylori activity against four different H.pylori strains that were established from patients with gastritis,gastric ulcer and gastric cancer.These components could be useful to overcome the drug-resistance H.pylori growth in stomach. 展开更多

Terpenoids are novel natural products isolated from mastic gum.Mastic gum was obtained from the Pistacia Lentiscus tree.Scientific investigations have documented medical and pharmacological properties of mastic gum such as memory enhancement,antifungal,and antibacterial activities.It was astonishing to study the possible interaction of mastic gum extract with microtubule proteins which are involved in memory and consciousness since the administration of mastic gum is evidenced in the improvement of brain functions.Since a number of studies have demonstrated the effect of microtubule dynamics on mammals'memory,in this study,we investigated the effect of Oxygenated Sesquiterpenes(OST)on microtubule polymerization in vitro.OST was purified from the ethanolic extract of mastic gum.The results revealed that OST induces microtubule polymerization;however,microtubule depolymerization was not affected and fluorometric assays showed conformational changes of tubulin in the presence of OST.We interestingly found that colchicine was unable to inhibit MT assembly in the presence of OST and OST was solely more efficient than the combination of OST with paclitaxel for elevating microtubule polymerization rate.We hope that OST could be a promising agent for memory enhancement and the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases as a novel tubulin-binding compound. 展开更多

Bite force is often associated with specific morphological features,such as sagittal crests.The presence of a pro-nounced sagittal crest in some tapirs(Perissodactyla:Tapiridae)was recently shown to be negatively correlated with hard-object feeding,in contrast with similar cranial structures in carnivorans.The aim of this study was to investi-gate bite forces and sagittal crest heights across a wide range of modern and extinct tapirs and apply a comparative investigation to establish whether these features are correlated across a broad phylogenetic scope.We examined a sample of 71 specimens representing 15 tapir species(5 extant,10 extinct)using the dry-skull method,linear measurements of cranial features,phylogenetic reconstruction,and comparative analyses.Tapirs were found to ex-hibit variation in bite force and sagittal crest height across their phylogeny and between different biogeographical realms,with high-crested morphologies occurring mostly in Neotropical species.The highest bite forces within tapirs appear to be driven by estimates for the masseter–pterygoid muscle complex,rather than predicted forces for the temporalis muscle.Our results demonstrate that relative sagittal crest height is poorly correlated with relative cranial bite force,suggesting high force application is not a driver for pronounced sagittal crests in this sample.The divergent biomechanical capabilities of different contemporaneous tapirids may have allowed multiple species to occupy overlapping territories and partition resources to avoid excess competition.Bite forces in tapirs peak in Pleistocene species,independent of body size,suggesting possible dietary shifts as a potential result of climatic changes during this epoch. 展开更多

Fatigue and rutting phenomena are major distresses in asphalt pavements.Asphalt mixture properties are highly dependent upon the asphalt binder and the mastic behavior.The purpose of this study was to investigate the behavior of the asphalt binder and the mastic,modified by the synthesized polyurethane,at high and intermediate temperatures.The filler/asphalt binder ratio(by weight)was 1.0.The dynamic shear rheometer(DSR)was used to measure fatigue(G^(*)sinδ)and rutting(G^(*)/sinδ)parameters.In this study,the multiple stress creepandrecovery(MSCR)testwasalso utilizedto calculate the ruttingpotential of theasphalt binder and themastic.Parameters of the non-recoverable compliance(Jnr)and the percentage recovery(%)were evaluated at high temperatures.The obtained results indicated that the synthesizedpolyurethaneimproved the ruttingandfatigue properties.Therewasa significant correlation between the asphalt binder and the mastic in terms of the complex modulus(R^(2)=0.9958),rutting(R^(2)=0.9944),and the non-recoverable compliance(R^(2)=0.9707).For the fatigue parameter(R^(2)=0.9852),the complex modulus(R^(2)=0.9855),and the phase angle(R^(2)=0.8262),significant relationships were observed between the asphalt binder and mastic samples at intermediate temperatures.Overall,the chemical reaction between the filler and the asphalt binder could be effective in different behaviors of the mastic and asphalt binder.Therewasa 112%-164%increase in the G^(*)sinδparameter formastics,compared to that of the asphalt binder.The complex modulus was 6 times higher by adding the filler content. 展开更多

Asphalt pavements with a healing capability are believed to be very useful since they can extend the pavement service life thanks to rest periods and hot summers. In order to design durable asphalt pavements,research in understanding and upgrading the self-healing capability of bituminous materials in time is of major importance. The self healing capability of bituminous mastic was evaluated in this research with a direct tension healing test. In the test program,different healing times,crack status and modifications were applied. The results indicate that elastic recovery and flow capacity are important factors for the self healing capability of bituminous materials at different crack phases as simulated with the direct tension test. 展开更多

The fatigue damage is one of the most common distresses observed on the asphalt concrete pavement.To thoroughly understand the fatigue of asphalt concrete,the behaviors of the major components of asphalt concrete under cyclic loading are investigated respectively in this study.A new experiment method is developed to evaluate the performances of asphalt binder,mastic and fine aggregates mixture under cyclic tensile loading.The fatigue test results of asphalt binder show that the fatigue performance of asphalt binder is closely related with loading magnitude,temperature and loading rate.Mastic specimens with different filler content are tested and the results indicate that mastic specimens with 30%filler content show better fatigue resistance and higher permanent strain.The micro-structure analysis of mastic and mixture indicates that the fatigue resistance is closely related with the air void content of specimen.3D digital specimens are developed to model the fatigue of the asphalt binder,mastic and mixture specimens based on the finite element method(FEM).Fatigue damage of asphalt concrete is simplified by a damage model.With proper selection of damage parameters,the simulation results agree well with laboratory test results and can be used as a basis for future fatigue research. 展开更多
