The oxidation beha...The oxidation behavior and damage mechanism of modifiers and compounds of many types of ceramic coatings were investigated experimentally. A MoSi 2/SiC coating was produced by infiltration process. The oxidation behavior of the coated C/C composites was studied at various temperatures below 1650℃. The oxidation results showed that the MoSi 2/SiC coating for thermal protection of C/C composites has high oxidation resistance at temperature up to 1650℃. In the present work, a new model of an oxidation protective, self sealing multi layer coating system was proposed for C/C composites. The multi layer coating possessing the self sealing property was obtained by pack cementation and infiltration process. The protection coating system for C/C composites consists of an inner layer of SiC and an outer layer of porous refractory oxides filled by modified SiO 2 glass. Isothermal and cyclic thermal oxidation tests showed the multi layer coating was capable of protecting the C/C composites in an oxidizing atmosphere at temperature up to 1800℃.展开更多

The sealing ring, made from PTFE composites, was subjected to serious wear on the sealing su...The sealing rings are one of the most important components as the sealing devices in the wet clutch unit of a heavy vehicle. The sealing ring, made from PTFE composites, was subjected to serious wear on the sealing surface, but the mating metal surface only had slight abrasion. A specialized test rig was designed for wear research and failure analysis of the sealing ring. The composition analyses of the ring material, working conditions and wear surface characteristics by visual inspection and tribological properties as well as microscopic analysis with scanning electron microscope was performed to determine the wear mechanism and failure causes. Results revealed that the wear of PTFE composites was characterized by abrasion and adhesion after a certain duration testing, and the wear mechanism changed to thermal fatigue and abrasive wear in the stage of intense wear. The thermal deformation and fatigue were primarily responsible for the rapid wear of the PTFE composites for the sealing rings.展开更多

The influence of friction state of the sealing ring on seal performance was also discussed. The relation between force characteristic and structural parameters of the sealing ring was analyzed. Analytical results indicate that friction state mainly depends on structural parameters of the sealing ring. The expression of calculating friction torque under the condition of mixed film friction was deduced. Experiment verification had been done. Experimental results agree with the deducing theoretical conclusions on the whole. It lays the foundation for design of new type of sealing ring used in composite transmission.展开更多

Probably the most problematic situations are the naturally fractured fo...Lost circulations have presented great challenges to the petroleum industry, causing great expenditures of cash and time to fighting the problem. Probably the most problematic situations are the naturally fractured formations where the operator may face total loss with no mud return in the annular. The voids or large fracture encountered in this case are often far too large to be plugged with conventional Lost Circulation Material. This paper will give a detailed introduction on a novel composite gel material usable to control severe losses and pressurization sealing. The plugging mechanics of this new composite gel material, which is different from conventional lost circulation materials, were elaborated as well. In addition, the properties of the new composite gel material such as thermostability, sealing strength and bearing resistance are characterized with specific experimental devices. The experimental results proved that the breakdown pressure of the new plugging reached more than 20MPa, and the maximum degraded temperature can be exceed 130℃. The field application at 4 wells in Puguang gas field, SINOPEC, demonstrated that the new composite gel material solved the serious loss in Ordovician carbonate fractured formation successfully and guaranteed the following completion cement operation smoothly. The composite gel sealing slurries, which was easily prepared on site, gives remarkable properties regarding pumping through drill pipes, adjustment of setting time and excellent sealing strength of the lost zone sealing, additionally, the whole pressurization sealing process was complicated within only ten hours. The on-site results show that the plugging ratio of the new composite gel was reached 100%, and the success rate of sealing operation kept above 80%.Thus the new LCM can guarantee safe drilling jobs and save operation cost more effectively.展开更多
The hydropower sector is currently experiencing several technological developments.New technologies and practices are emerging to make hydropower more flexible and more sustainable.Novel materials have also been recen...The hydropower sector is currently experiencing several technological developments.New technologies and practices are emerging to make hydropower more flexible and more sustainable.Novel materials have also been recently developed to increase performance,durability,and reliability;however,no systematic discussions can be found in the literature.Therefore,in this paper,novel materials for hydropower applications are presented,and their performance,advantages,and limitations are discussed.For example,composites can reduce the weight of steel equipment by 50%to 80%,polymers and superhydrophobic materials can reduce head losses by 4%to 20%,and novel bearing materials can reduce bearing wear by 6%.These improvements determine higher efficiencies,longer life span,waste reduction,and maintenance needs,although the initial cost of some materials is not yet competitive with respect to the costs of traditional materials.The novel materials are described here based on the following categories:novel materials for turbines,dams and waterways,bearings,seals,and ocean hydropower.展开更多

Because of the high temperature,there are major challenges in the sealing of flanged connections for tubes made of alloys and nonmetallic materials. In this study, an improved method for sealing bolted flange connections for tubes made of dissimilar materials at high temperature is analyzed. The study focuses on the compensation mechanism for the difference in thermal expansion between the bolts and the flanges. An angle is introduced for the sealing surface in the flanged connection to provide effective sealing. The arctangent of the angle is the ratio of the thickness between the theoretical core of the sealing surface and the outside end face of the flange to the distances between the axis of the flanged joint and the theoretical core of the sealing surface of the flange; the sealing surface of the flange, which is made of the same material as the fastening assemblies, faces the fastening assemblies. To ensure effective sealing, the frictional coefficient between the two sealing surfaces should not exceed the tangent of the angle. This result does not agree well with the solution given by previous researchers. Further, in the modified flanged connection, the compression of each bolt in the clamped condition is increased to maintain the compaction force unchanged without increasing the number of bolts on the flanged joint.展开更多

SiC_(f)/SiBCZr composites were prepared by polymer precursor impregnation and pyrolysis process with near stoichiometric ratio SiC fiber preform as reinforcement phase and SiBCZr multiphase ceramic precursor as impreg...SiC_(f)/SiBCZr composites were prepared by polymer precursor impregnation and pyrolysis process with near stoichiometric ratio SiC fiber preform as reinforcement phase and SiBCZr multiphase ceramic precursor as impregnating reagent.The results highlighted that the SiC_(f)/SiBCZr composites exhibited excellent ablative properties after ablative tests at 1200℃/3600 s and 1400℃/3600 s,and the strength retention rates of the composites reached 90%and 85%,respectively.This was mainly due to the liquid sealing effect of the ablative products represented by B2O_(3) and SiO_(2)∙B_(2)O_(3),which inhibited the ablative reaction by reducing the diffusion rate of the oxidation medium,and the solid pinning effect of the substances represented by SiO_(2),ZrO_(2),and ZrSiO_(4),which could play high viscosity and high strength characteristics to improve anti-erosion ability.The above-mentioned SiC_(f)/SiBCZr composites with corrosion resistance,oxidation resistance,and ablative resistance provided a solid material foundation and technical support for the development of reusable spacecraft hot-end components.展开更多
