The performance of geosynthetic-reinforced embankments under traffic moving loads is always a hotspot in the geotechnical engineering field.A three-dimensional(3D)model of a geosynthetic-reinforced embankment without drainage consolidation was established using the finite element software ABAQUS.In this model, the traffic loads were simulated by two moving loads of rectangular pattern, and their amplitude, range, and moving speed were realized by a Fortran subroutine. The embankment fill was simulated by an equivalent linear viscoelastic model, which can reflect its viscoelasticity. The geogrid was simulated by the truss element, and the geocell was simulated by the membrane element.Infinite elements were utilized to weaken the boundary effect caused by the model geometry at the boundaries.Validation of the established numerical model was conducted by comparing the predicted deformations in the cross-section of the geosynthetic-reinforced embankment with those from the existing literature. On this basis, the dynamic stress and strain distribution in the pavement structure layer of the geosynthetic-reinforced embankment under a moving load was also analyzed. Finally,a parametric study was conducted to examine the influences of the different types of reinforcement, overload, and the moving load velocity on the geosynthetic-reinforced embankment. 展开更多

Water jet technology is widely used in submerged buried pipes as a non-traditional trenching process, often invol-ving a complex sediment response. An important adjustable and influential engineering variable in this technol-ogy is represented by the impinging distance. In this study, the FLOW-3D software was used to simulate the jet scouring of sand beds in a submerged environment. In particular, four sets of experimental conditions were con-sidered to discern the relationship between the maximum scour depth and mass and the impinging distance. As shown by the results,a critical impinging distance h0 exists by which the static scour depth can be maximized;the scour mass ratio between dynamic and static conditions decreases as the impinging distance increases. Moreover, the profile contours are similar when the erosion parameter Ec is in the range 0.35<Ec<2.Empirical equations applicable for predicting the jet trenching contour under both dynamic and static scour modes are also provided in this study. 展开更多

Concrete slabs are widely used in modern railways to increase the inherent resilient quality of the tracks, provide safe and smooth rides, and reduce the maintenance frequency. In this paper, the elastic performance of a novel slab trackform for high-speed railways is investigated using three-dimensional finite element modelling in Abaqus. It is then compared to the performance of a ballasted track.First, slab and ballasted track models are developed to replicate the full-scale testing of track sections.Once the models are calibrated with the experimental results, the novel slab model is developed and compared against the calibrated slab track results. The slab and ballasted track models are then extended to create linear dynamic models, considering the track geodynamics, and simulating train passages at various speeds, for which the Ledsgard documented case was used to validate the models.Trains travelling at low and high speeds are analysed to investigate the track deflections and the wave propagation in the soil, considering the issues associated with critical speeds.Various train loading methods are discussed, and the most practical approach is retained and described. Moreover, correlations are made between the geotechnical parameters of modern high-speed rail and conventional standards. It is found that considering the same ground condition, the slab track deflections are considerably smaller than those of the ballasted track at high speeds, while they show similar behaviour at low speeds. 展开更多

Matrix swelling effect will cause the change of microstructure of coal reservoir and its permeability, which is the key factor affecting the engineering effect of CO_(2)-ECBM technology. The Sihe and Yuwu collieries are taken as research objects.Firstly, visualization reconstruction of coal reservoir is realized.Secondly, the evolution of the pore/fracture structures under different swelling contents is discussed. Then, the influence of matrix phase with different swelling contents on permeability is discussed. Finally, the mechanism of swelling effect during the CO_(2)-ECBM process is further discussed. The results show that the intra-matrix pores and matrix-edge fractures are the focus of this study, and the contacting area between matrix and pore/fracture is the core area of matrix swelling. The number of matrix particles decreases with the increase of size, and the distribution of which is isolated with small size and interconnected with large size. The swelling effect of matrix particles with larger size has a great influence on the pore/fracture structures. The number of connected pores/fractures is limited and only interconnected in a certain direction. With the increase of matrix swelling content, the number, porosity, width, fractal dimension, surface area and volume of pores/fractures decrease, and their negative contribution to absolute permeability increases from 0.368% to 0.633% and 0.868%-1.404%,respectively.With the increase of swelling content, the number of intra-matrix pores gradually decreases and the pore radius becomes shorter during the CO_(2)-ECBM process. The matrix continuously expands to the connected fractures, and the width of connected fractures gradually shorten.Under the influence of matrix swelling, the bending degree of fluid flow increases gradually,so the resistance of fluid migration increases and the permeability gradually decreases. This study shows that the matrix swelling effect is the key factor affecting CBM recovery, and the application of this effect in CO_(2)-ECBM process can be discussed. 展开更多

The human immunodeficiency viruses are two species of Lentivirus that infect humans.Over time, they cause acquired immunodeficiency syndrome,a condition in which progressive immune system failure allows life-threatening opportunistic infections and cancers to thrive.Human immunodeficiency virus infection came from a type of chimpanzee in Central Africa.Studies show that immunodeficiency viruses may have jumped from chimpanzees to humans as far back as the late 1800s.Over decades, human immunodeficiency viruses slowly spread across Africa and later into other parts of the world. The Susceptible-Infected-Recovered(SIR)models are significant in studying disease dynamics. In this paper,we have studied the effect of irresponsible immigrants on HIV/AIDS dynamics by formulating and considering different methods.Euler,Runge Kutta, and a Non-standardfinite difference(NSFD)method are developed for the same problem.Numerical experiments are performed at disease-free and endemic equilibria points at different time step sizes‘ℎ’.The results reveal that, unlike Euler and Runge Kutta, which fail for large time step sizes, the proposed Non-standardfinite difference(NSFD)method gives a convergence solution for any time step size. Our proposed numerical method is bounded, dynamically con-sistent,and preserves the positivity of the continuous solution, which are essential requirements when modeling a prevalent disease. 展开更多

This study is to understand the impact of operating conditions, especially initial operation temperature (Tini) which is set in a high temperature range, on the temperature profile of the interface between the polymer electrolyte membrane (PEM) and the catalyst layer at the cathode (i.e., the reaction surface) in a single cell of polymer electrolyte fuel cell (PEFC). A 1D multi-plate heat transfer model based on the temperature data of the separator measured using the thermograph in a power generation experiment was developed to evaluate the reaction surface temperature (Treact). In addition, to validate the proposed heat transfer model, Treact obtained from the model was compared with that from the 3D numerical simulation using CFD software COMSOL Multiphysics which solves the continuity equation, Brinkman equation, Maxwell-Stefan equation, Butler-Volmer equation as well as heat transfer equation. As a result, the temperature gap between the results obtained by 1D heat transfer model and those obtained by 3D numerical simulation is below approximately 0.5 K. The simulation results show the change in the molar concentration of O2 and H2O from the inlet to the outlet is more even with the increase in Tini due to the lower performance of O2 reduction reaction. The change in the current density from the inlet to the outlet is more even with the increase in Tini and the value of current density is smaller with the increase in Tini due to the increase in ohmic over-potential and concentration over-potential. It is revealed that the change in Treact from the inlet to the outlet is more even with the increase in Tini irrespective of heat transfer model. This is because the generated heat from the power generation is lower with the increase in Tini due to the lower performance of O2 reduction reaction. 展开更多

In numerical modelling, selection of the constitutive model is a critical factor in predicting the actual response of a geomaterial. The use of oversimplified or inadequate models may not be sufficient to reproduce the actual geomaterial behaviour. That selection is especially relevant in the case of aniso-tropic rocks, and particularly for shales and slates, whose behaviour may be affected,e.g.well stability in geothermal or oil and gas production operations. In this paper,an alternative anisotropic constitutive model has been implemented in the finite element method software CODE_BRIGHT,which is able to account for the anisotropy of shales and slates in terms of both deformability and strength. For this purpose,a transversely isotropic version of the generalised Hooke’s law is adopted to represent the stiffness anisotropy, while a nonuniform scaling of the stress tensor is introduced in the plastic model to represent the strength anisotropy.Furthermore,a detailed approach has been proposed to determine the model parameters based on the stressestrain results of laboratory tests. Moreover, numerical analyses are performed to model uniaxial and triaxial tests on Vaca Muerta shale,Bossier shale and slate from the northwest of Spain(NW Spain slate). The experimental data have been recovered from the literature in the case of the shale and,in the case of the slate, performed by the authors in terms of stress-strain curves and strengths.A good agreement can be generally observed between numerical and experi-mental results, hence showing the potential applicability of the approach to actual case studies. Therefore, the presented constitutive model may be a promising approach for analysing the anisotropic behaviour of rocks and its impact on well stability or other relevant geomechanical problems in aniso-tropic rocks. 展开更多

Computational fluid dynamics was used and a numerical simulation analysis of boiling heat transfer in microchannels with three depths and three cross-sectional profiles was conducted. The heat transfer coefficient and bubble generation process of three microchannel structures with a width of 80μm and a depth of 40,60,and 80μm were compared during the boiling process, and the factors influencing bubble generation were studied.A visual test bench was built, and test substrates of different sizes were prepared using a micro-nano laser.During the test, the behavior characteristics of the bubbles on the boiling surface and the temperature change of the heated wall were collected with a high-speed camera and a temperature sensor. It was found that the microchannel with a depth of 80μm had the largest heat transfer coefficient and shortest bubble growth period, the rectangular channel had a larger peak heat transfer coefficient and a lower frequency of bubble occurrence, while the V-shaped channel had the shortest growth period,i.e.,the highest frequency of bubble occurrence, but its heat transfer coefficient was smaller than that of the rectangular channel. 展开更多

Vesicles can be of different sizes and shapes and can be randomly distributed within vesicular volcanic rocks. This study investigates the variation of engineering properties of vesicular rocks due to the changes in vesicle distribution characteristics for different cases of bulk porosity and vesicle diameter using a systematic numerical simulation program using the finite element method-based rock failure process analysis (RFPA) software. Models with uniform-size vesicles and combinations of different proportions of different-sized vesicles were considered to resemble natural vesicular rocks more closely, and ten different random vesicle distributions were tested for each case. Increasing bulk porosity decreased the uniaxial compressive strength (UCS) and elastic modulus of the specimens, and the specimens with the lowest bulk porosity showed the greatest range of UCS values in the case of uniform-size vesicles. The effect of vesicle diameter on UCS showed an unsystematic response which was understood to be a result of different vesicle distribution patterns, some of which facilitated a shear failure. Specimens with multiple-size vesicles in different proportions revealed that the variation of UCS due to vesicle distribution characteristics is minimum when the bulk porosity is equally shared by different size vesicles. In addition, when the proportion of smaller-sized vesicles is higher, UCS showed an increase compared to that of the equal proportion of different size vesicles case at low porosities, but a decrease at higher porosities. Variation of elastic modulus showed minor, unsystematic fluctuations as a function of vesicle diameter and different proportions of different-sized vesicles, and the range for different vesicle distribution patterns was narrow in general. Overall, the findings of this study recommend cautious use of the engineering properties determined through a limited number of laboratory tests on vesicular rocks. 展开更多

Leakage occurring in the tube sockets of the main steam thermometers can seriously threaten the safe operation of coal-fired power plants. Here, assuming a 300 MW unit as a relevant testbed, this problem is investigated numerically through solution of the equations of fluid-dynamics in synergy with the mathematical treatment of relevant statistics. The results indicate that the steam can form a large-scale spiral flow inside the tube socket and continuously scour the inner wall.In the model with the protective casing setting angle of 60°,the average tangential fluid velocity can reach up to 4.8 m/s,which is about twice higher than that in the model with the protective casing setting angle of 0°.The wake disturbance generated by the flow around the thermo-sensitive body leads to differences in the fluid motion inside the tube sockets between the upstream and downstream thermometers. These differences are affected by the distance between the thermometers, the setting angle of protective casing, and other factors. The pressure of the main steam inside the tube socket for a R3 thermometer, located outside the curved pipeline,is about 1756 Pa higher than that of the L3 thermometer located outside the straight pipeline, indicating that the secondary flow generated in the curved pipeline is able to provide stronger energy for the large-scale spiral flow inside the tube socket. On the basis of these findings,an improvement scheme for the installation of long-itudinal ribs in the tube sockets is proposed. The simulation results show that the average tangential velocity of the fluid within the near-wall area of tube sockets decreases by more than 90%,which should be enough to effectively alleviate the damage to the inner wall caused by high-pressure fluid or particles. 展开更多

High efficiency welding has always been one of the hot research subjects at home and overseas. Aiming at the problem of unstable droplet rotating spray transfer process in 450 A thin wire metal active gas arc(MAG) welding, a three-dimensional arc-droplet coupled model is established in this paper on the base of fluid dynamics to conduct numerical analysis for droplet transfer behavior with external magnetic controlled MAG welding, and used high-speed camera system to verify the simulation results. The results indicate that without external magnetic field, the droplet is transferred by the way of rotating spray, the arc is changeable and the spatter is serious. The electromagnetic force accelerates the radial liquid beam rotation under direct current(DC) magnetic field, and increases the angle between liquid beam and welding wire axis. Meanwhile, the rotation frequency of the liquid beam reaches 400 Hz, the area of arc column and heat loss increase under DC magnetic field. Based on the alternating magnetic field, the arc is the “bell shaped”, the arc stiffness raises, its temperature achieves 26 000 K, and the maximum speed of the liquid stream beam can reach 500 m/s. And the droplet transfer is more stable, the spatter significantly reduces, and welding quality is effectively improved. 展开更多

In-Vessel Retention (IVR) is one of the existing strategies of severe accident management of LWR, which intends to stabilize and isolate corium & fission products inside the reactor pressure vessel (RPV) and primary containment structure. Since it has become an important safety objective for nuclear reactors, it is therefore needed to model and evaluate relevant phenomena of IVR strategy in assessing safety of nuclear power reactors. One of the relevant phenomena during accident progression in the oxidic pool is non-uniform high heat generation occurring at large scale. Consequently, direct experimental studies at these scales are not possible. The role computer codes and models are therefore important in order to transpose experimental results to reactor safety applications. In this paper, the state-of-the-art ANSYS FLUENT CFD code is used to simulate Non-uniform heat generation in the lower plenum by the application of Cartridge heating under severe accident conditions to derive the basic accident scenario. However, very few studies have been performed to simulate non-uniform decay heat generation by Cartridge heaters in a pool corresponding lower plenum of power reactor. The current investigation focuses on non-uniform heating in the fluid domain by Cartridge heaters, which has been done using ANSYS FLUENT CFD code by K-epsilon model. The computed results are based on qualitative assessment in the form of temperature and velocity contour and quantitative assessment in terms of temperature and heat flux distribution to assess the impact of heating method on natural convective fluid flow and heat transfer. 展开更多

Deep in-situ rock mechanics considers the influence of the in-situ environment on mechanical properties, differentiating it from traditional rock mechanics. To investigate the effect of in-situ stress, pore pressure preserved environment on the mechanical difference of sandstone, four tests are numerically modeled by COMSOL:conventional triaxial test, conventional pore pressure test,in-situ stress restoration and reconstruction test, and in-situ pore pressure-preserved test(not yet realized in the laboratory). The in-situ stress restoration parameter is introduced to characterize the recovery effect of in-situ stress on elastic modulus and heterogeneous distribution of sandstone at different depths.A random function and nonuniform pore pressure coefficient are employed to describe the non-uniform distribution of pore pressure in the in-situ environment.Numerical results are compared with existing experimental data to validate the models and calibrate the numerical parameters.By extracting mechanical parameters from numerical cores, the stress-strain curves of the four tests under different depths,in-situ stress and pore pressure are compared. The influence of non-uniform pore pressure coefficient and depth on the peak strength of sandstone is analyzed. The results show a strong linear relationship between the in-situ stress restoration parameter and depth, effectively characterizing the enhanced effect of stress restoration and reconstruction methods on the elastic modulus of conventional cores at different depths. The in-situ pore pressurepreserved test exhibits lower peak stress and peak strain compared to the other three tests, and sandstone subjected to non-uniform pore pressure is more prone to plastic damage and failure. Moreover, the influence of non-uniform pore pressure on peak strength gradually diminished with increasing depth. 展开更多

Flow channels with a variable cross-section are important components of piping system and are widely used in variousfields of engineering.Using afinite element method and modal analysis theory,flow-induced noise, mode shapes, and structure-borne noise in such systems are investigated in this study. The results demonstrate that the maximum displacement and equivalent stress are located in the part with variable cross-sectional area. The aver-age excitation force on theflow channel wall increases with theflow velocity. The maximum excitation force occurs in the range of 0–20 Hz,and then it decreases gradually in the range of 20–1000 Hz.Additionally,as theflow velocity rises from 1 to 3 m/s,the overall sound pressure level associated with theflow-induced noise grows from 49.37 to 66.37 dB.Similarly, the overall sound pressure level associated with the structure-borne noise rises from 40.27 to 72.20 dB.When theflow velocity is increased, the increment of the structure-borne noise is higher than that of theflow-induced noise. 展开更多

Purpose-It is of great significance to study the influence of subgrade filling on permafrost temperature field in permafrost area for the smooth construction and safe operation of railway.Design/methodology/approach-The paper builds up the model for the hydrothermal coupling calculation of permafrost using finite element software COMSOL to study how permafrost temperature field changes in the short term after subgrade filling,on which basis it proposes the method of calculation for the concave distortion of freezing front in the subgrade-covered area.Findings-The results show that the freezing front below the subgrade center sinks due to the thermal effect of subgrade filling, which will trigger hydrothermal erosion in case of sufficient moisture inflows, leading to the thawing settlement or the cracking of the subgrade, etc. The heat output of soil will be hindered the most in case of July filling,in which case the sinking and the distortion of the freezing front is found to be the most severe, which the recovery of the permafrost temperature field, the slowest, constituting the most unfavorable working condition. The concave distortion of the freezing front in the subgrade area increases with the increase in temperature difference between the filler and ground surface, the subgrade height, the subgrade width and the volumetric thermal capacity of filler, while decreases with the increase of the thermal conductivity of filler. Therefore, the filler chose for engineering project shall be of small volumetric thermal capacity, low initial temperature and high thermal conductivity whenever possible.Originality/value-The concave distortion of the freezing front under different working conditions at different times after filling can be calculated using the method proposed. 展开更多

Temperature sensitivity of soil respiration is essential to predict possible changes in terrestrial carbon budget on various scenarios about atmospheric and soil climates. Although it is often evaluated by using respiratory quotient “Q10”, Q10 values of soil respiration seem to vary depending on methods or scales of evaluation. Aiming at probing how Q10 values of soil respiration are evaluated differently for a field, this study used a model of soil respiration rate, and numerically evaluated soil respiration rates along depth by fitting the model to depth distributions of CO2 concentration measured in a field. And temperature sensitivity of soil respiration rate was evaluated by comparing the determined soil respiration rates with atmospheric and soil temperatures measured in the field. The results showed that the relation between surface CO2 emission rates and atmospheric temperatures was represented by lower Q10 values than that between soil respiration rates and soil temperatures, presumably because the top soil layers had acclimatized in more extent to the existing thermal regime than the underlying deeper layers. Thus, for evaluating effects of long-term rise in atmospheric temperature on soil respiration, it is necessary to precisely predict the long-term change in depth distribution of soil temperature as well as to quantify temperature sensitivity of soil respiration along depth. The evaluated sensitivity of surface CO2 emission rate to atmospheric temperature showed hysteresis, implying the needs for more knowledge about temperature sensitivity of soil respiration evaluated in both warming and cooling processes for better understandings and predictions about terrestrial carbon cycling. 展开更多

In this paper a mixed finite element-characteristic mixed finite element method is discussed to simulate an incompressible miscible Darcy-Forchheimer problem. The flow equation is solved by a mixed finite element and the approximation accuracy of Darch-Forchheimer velocity is improved one order. The concentration equation is solved by the method of mixed finite element, where the convection is discretized along the characteristic direction and the diffusion is discretized by the zero-order mixed finite element method. The characteristics can confirm strong stability at sharp fronts and avoids numerical dispersion and nonphysical oscillation. In actual computations the characteristics adopts a large time step without any loss of accuracy. The scalar unknowns and its adjoint vector function are obtained simultaneously and the law of mass conservation holds in every element by the zero-order mixed finite element discretization of diffusion flux.In order to derive the optimal 3/2-order error estimate in L^(2) norm,a post-processing technique is included in the approximation to the scalar unknowns.Numerical experiments are illustrated finally to validate theoretical analysis and efficiency. This method can be used to solve such an important problem. 展开更多

The Westwood Mine aims to reuse the tailings storage facility #1(TSF #1) for solid waste storage, but, downstream of the Northwest dike is considered critical in terms of stability. This paper uses numerical modeling along with geophysical monitoring for assessing the Northwest dike stability during the restoration phase. The impact of waste rock deposition in the upstream TSF #1 is considered. The geophysical monitoring is based on electrical resistivity methods and was used to investigate the internal structure of the dike embankment in different deposition stages. The numerical simulations were performed with SLOPE/W code. The results show a factor of safety well above the minimum recommended value of 1.5. Geophysical monitoring revealed a vertical variation in the electrical resistivity across the dike, which indicates a multilayer structure of the embankment. Without any current in situ data, the geophysical monitoring helped estimating the nature of the materials used and the internal structure of the embankment. These interpretations were validated by geological observation of geotechnical log of the embankment. Based on this study, it is recommended that the water polishing pond be partly filled before waste rock is deposited in TSF #1. In addition, to ensure the stability of the dike, the piezometric head monitoring prior to and during waste rock deposition is recommended. 展开更多

Wrinkling patterns and the rules of wrinkling formation and expansion were analyzed in this paper. Direct disturbing method,a numerical method for membrane wrinkling analysis, was established based on finite element programme. The experimental results using photogrammetric procedure were compared with numerical analysis results. It is shown that the reasonable wrinkling deformation can be obtained by rational mesh density and timely removes the initial flaw during analysis. Wrinkles firstly appear on the left and right sides then extend to the membrane center, and the wrinkling amplitude increases with shear displacement. Results from both of the experiments and numerical analysis have a good agreement, which verifies the rationality of the numerical analysis method. 展开更多
