The shipbuilding industry in America is shrinking, owing to the high cost of production. Up to 1993,Japanese ship yards had still been in difficult situation, and many Japanese ship owners would rather order new ships from South Korea because the rising value of Japanese yen made it expensive to build in domestic yards. To know the development of shipping economics,it is meaningful to overview shipping economics systemically from the perspective of markets and the shipping industry chain.To stimulate future research,this article presents an introduction to the evolution of research models including static models,dynamic models and networks theory,the characteristics of shipping markets including volatility,seasonal and market cycle,and a comprehensive review of the development of shipping economics in the past four decades.We review shipping economics in the following steps:single market’s research is generalized including the freight market,financial market including FFA market and investment market,shipbuilding market,and secondhand market;two markets’correlation,information transmission,spillover effects,and other rules in shipping markets are surveyed;the correlation and risk of multi-markets are also investigated.Then,we summarize relationships of the shipping industry chain.Finally,we figure out issues in this field that need further study. 展开更多

Following developments in artificial intelligence and big data technology,the level of intelligence in intelligent vessels has been improved.Intelligent vessels are being developed into unmanned surface vehicles(USVs),which have widely interested scholars in the shipping industry due to their safety,high efficiency,and energy-saving qualities.Considering the current development of USVs,the types of USVs and applications domestically and internationally are being investigated.USVs emerged with technological developments and their characteristics show some differences from traditional vessels,which brings some problems and advantages for their application.Certain maritime regulations are not applicable to USVs and must be changed.The key technologies in the current development of USVs are being investigated.While the level of intelligence is improving,the protection of cargo cannot be neglected.An innovative approach to the internal structure of USVs is proposed,where the inner hull can automatically recover its original state in case of outer hull tilting.Finally,we summarize the development status of USVs,which are an inevitable direction of development in the marine field. 展开更多

In Container terminals,a quay crane’s resource hour is affected by various complex nonlinear factors,and it is not easy to make a forecast quickly and accurately.Most ports adopt the empirical estimation method at present,and most of the studies assumed that accurate quay crane’s resource hour could be obtained in advance.Through the ensemble learning(EL)method,the influence factors and correlation of quay crane’s resources hour were analyzed based on a large amount of historical data.A multi-factor ensemble learning estimation model based quay crane’s resource hour was established.Through a numerical example,it is finally found that Adaboost algorithm has the best effect of prediction,with an error of 1.5%.Through the example analysis,it comes to a conclusion:the error is 131.86%estimated by the experience method.It will lead that subsequent shipping cannot be serviced as scheduled,increasing the equipment wait time and preparation time,and generating additional cost and energy consumption.In contrast,the error based Adaboost learning estimation method is 12.72%.So Adaboost has better performance. 展开更多

Pipe-routing for ship is formulated as searching for the near-optimal pipe paths while meeting certain objectives in an environment scattered with obstacles. Due to the complex construction in layout space, the great number of pipelines, numerous and diverse design constraints and large amount of obstacles, finding the optimum route of ship pipes is a complicated and time-consuming process. A modified NSGA-II algorithm based approach is proposed to find the near-optimal solution to solve the problem. By simplified equipment models, the layout space is firstly divided into three dimensional (3D) grids to build its mathematical model. In the modified NSGA-II algorithm, the concept of auxiliary point is introduced to improve the search range of maze algorithm (MA) as well as to guarantee the diversity of chromosomes in initial population. Then the fix-length coding mechanism is proposed, Fuzzy set theory is also adopted to select the optimal solution in Pareto solutions. Finally, the effectiveness and efficiency of the proposed approach is demonstrated by the contrast test and simulation. The merit of the proposed algorithm lies in that it can provide more appropriate solutions for the designers while subject certain constrains. 展开更多

Advance development of materials technology introduces graphene as a powerful material for various applications in any branch of engineering and industries.Marine and shipping are one of the projected industries which are affected by graphene improvement.The conventional approach of technical manufactures and processes on ship and maritime environments,such as water treatment,oil separation and evacuation,is proven to be developed into more practical ways by utilizing characteristics and properties of graphene-based material.This work is addressed to study graphene as an engineering material in which structural arrangement,mechanical strength,electrical conductivity,and permeability of the material are discussed.Instrumental and cycle applications related to ship operations are defined to be an initial milestone to assess dedicated works in graphene and ship.Potential and future projections based on the works are linked with existing challenges and problems on boards,such as free surface effects and materials coating.Several works showed that graphene-based baffle has the potential to replace the current baffle style in oil tankers and liquid carriers.The electrical conductivity of the graphene is also useful for structural coating for ships that can operate in extremely cold regions,e.g.,the Arctic and Antartica. 展开更多

As part of China's "the Belt and Road"strategy, China Railway Express provides alternative shipping routes and transportation modes from Asia to Europe and creates new opportunities for intermodal transportation in the shipping industry. A time–distancebased cost(time cost) function was proposed to compare China Railway Express with traditional transportation modes. Time cost was related to different types of cargoes,which exhibit distinct sensitivity to time. Using the proposed cost function as basis, we identified the cost indifference area where total costs are equal. Further analysis was performed for selecting the transportation mode and supply area for a specific cargo. This study provides various parties, such as business owners, the government, and the shipping industry, with many valuable insights. 展开更多

The aim of maintenance is to reduce the number of failures in equipment and to avoid breakdowns that may lead to disruptions during operations.The objective of this study is to initiate the development of a predictive maintenance solution in the shipping industry based on a computational artificial intelligence model using real-time monitoring data.The data analysed originates from the historical values from sensors measuring the vessel´s engines and compressors health and the software used to analyse these data was R.The results demonstrated key parameters held a stronger influence in the overall state of the components and proved in most cases strong correlations amongst sensor data from the same equipment.The results also showed a great potential to serve as inputs for developing a predictive model,yet further elements including failure modes identification,detection of potential failures and asset criticality are some of the issues required to define prior designing the algorithms and a solution based on artificial intelligence.A systematic approach using big data and machine learning as techniques to create predictive maintenance strategies is already creating disruption within the shipping industry,and maritime organizations need to consider how to implement these new technologies into their business operations and to improve the speed and accuracy in their maintenance decision making. 展开更多

Branch-pipe routing plays fundamental and critical roles in ship-pipe design. The branch-pipe-routing problem is a complex combinatorial optimization problem and is thus difficult to solve when depending only on human experts. A modified genetic-algorithm-based approach is proposed in this paper to solve this problem. The simplified layout space is first divided into three- dimensional (3D) grids to build its mathematical model. Branch pipes in layout space are regarded as a combination of several two-point pipes, and the pipe route between two connection points is generated using an improved maze algorithm. The coding of branch pipes is then defined, and the genetic operators are devised, especially the complete crossover strategy that greatly accelerates the convergence speed. Finally, simulation tests demonstrate the performance of proposed method. 展开更多
