Conventional design methods often need exact modeling or accurate struct...Complex engineered systems are often difficult to analyze and design due to the tangled interdependencies among their subsystems and components. Conventional design methods often need exact modeling or accurate structure decomposition, which limits their practical application. The rapid expansion of data makes utilizing data to guide and improve system design indispensable in practical engineering. In this paper, a data driven uncertainty evaluation approach is proposed to support the design of complex engineered systems. The core of the approach is a data-mining based uncertainty evaluation method that predicts the uncertainty level of a specific system design by means of analyzing association relations along different system attributes and synthesizing the information entropy of the covered attribute areas, and a quantitative measure of system uncertainty can be obtained accordingly. Monte Carlo simulation is introduced to get the uncertainty extrema, and the possible data distributions under different situations is discussed in detail.The uncertainty values can be normalized using the simulation results and the values can be used to evaluate different system designs. A prototype system is established, and two case studies have been carried out. The case of an inverted pendulum system validates the effectiveness of the proposed method, and the case of an oil sump design shows the practicability when two or more design plans need to be compared. This research can be used to evaluate the uncertainty of complex engineered systems completely relying on data, and is ideally suited for plan selection and performance analysis in system design.展开更多

Simultaneous consideration of variability in physically disabled users, machines and environment of the manufacturing system is extremely complex and generally requires modeling of physically handicapped interaction with the system. Most current modeling either concentrates on the task results or functional disability. The integration of physical constraints with task constraints is far more complex because of functional disability and its extended influence on adjacent body parts. A framework is proposed to integrate the two constraints and thus model the specific behavior of the physical handicapped in virtual environment generated by product specifications. Within the framework a simplified model of physical disabled body is constructed, and body motion is generated based on 3 levels of constraints(effecter constraints, kinematics constraints and physical constraints). The kinematics and dynamic calculations are made and optimized based on the weighting manipulated by the kinematics constraints and dynamic constraints. With object transferring task as example, the model is validated in Jack 6.0. Modelled task motion elements except for squatting and overreaching well matched with captured motion elements. The proposed modeling method can model the complex behavior of the physically handicapped by integrating both task and physical disability constraints.展开更多

The first step towards this goal is to accommodate, under practical constraints, various design objectives that are desirable in both time and frequency domains. Such performance-prioritised unification is aimed at relieving practising engineers from having to select a particular control scheme and from sacrificing certain performance goals resulting from pre-commitment to such schemes. With recent progress in evolutionary computing based extra-numeric, multi-criterion search and optimisation techniques, such unification of LTI control schemes becomes feasible, analytical and practical, and the resultant designs can be creative. The techniques developed are applied to, and illustrated by, three design problems. The unified approach automatically provides an integrator for zero-steady state error in velocity control of a DC motor, and meets multiple objectives in the design of an LTI controller for a non-minimum phase plant and offers a high-performance LTI controller network for a non-linear chemical process.展开更多

The real-time distributed control and diagnosis system based on the Time Trigger Controller Area Network (TTCAN) with 10 ms basic control period was developed. The concept and implementation of processor (or controller) monitor and process (or task) monitor technique based on the TTCAN were applied in this paper. The fault tolerant control algorithm of the fuel cell engine and the battery management system were considered. The demonstration experience verified that the fault tolerant control was very important for the fuel cell city bus.展开更多

The methodology developed is depicted by a set of coordination mechanisms using hierarchical net structures and their accompanying rules. With the net models, the hierarchical and distributed control system is designed for an assembly task. Synchronization commands allow coordination of the movements of the robots. The net models make concurrency of the movements of the robots transparent to users. The net based machine controller executes robot motion control through the communication with the external robot controller using the command/response concept. Sensory signals indicating the change of state of robots are used to trigger or initiate tasks. Simultaneous movement of the robots is obtained by creating different background threads running in parallel under Windows OS. The multilevel hierarchical control system can be consistently constructed using net models.展开更多

The optimistic view is based on the fact that the path loss in mm Wave...There are two main opposing views in the wireless industry on the feasibility of developing 5th generation(5G) cellular networks in mm-Wave bands. The optimistic view is based on the fact that the path loss in mm Wave bands is not significantly worse than that in cellular bands when beamforming gain is also considered. The cautious view points out the significant blockage issues due to the lack of diffraction and adequate penetration in mm Wave bands. The implementation of 5G mm Wave cellular networks also faces major challenges due to the high link budget needed for long- range communication and the strong dependency on beamforming technology. This paper addresses some of these fundamental technology issues, from mm Wave channel characters and channel modeling to the implications on system and network architecture design.Although we believe that mm Wave can be used for 5G networks, we show that the air interface, device and network design will be very different from existing cellular design.展开更多

Aiming at reducing the difficulty of cooling the interior of high-density motors,this study proposed the placement of a water cold plate cooling structure between the axial laminations of the motor stator.The effect o...Aiming at reducing the difficulty of cooling the interior of high-density motors,this study proposed the placement of a water cold plate cooling structure between the axial laminations of the motor stator.The effect of the cooling water flow,thickness of the plate,and motor loss density on the cooling effect of the water cold plate were studied.To compare the cooling performance of water cold plate and outer spiral water jacket cooling structures,a high-speed permanent magnet motor with a high loss density was used to establish two motor models with the two cooling structures.Consequently,the cooling effects of the two models were analyzed using the finite element method under the same loss density,coolant flow,and main dimensions.The results were as follows.(1)The maximum and average temperatures of the water cold plate structure were reduced by 25.5%and 30.5%,respectively,compared to that of the outer spiral water jacket motor;(2)Compared with the outer spiral water jacket structure,the water cold plate structure can reduce the overall mass and volume of the motor.Considering a 100 kW high-speed permanent magnet motor as an example,a water cold plate cooling system was designed,and the temperature distribution is analyzed,with the result indicating that the cooling structure satisfied the cooling requirements of the high loss density motor.展开更多
System analysis and design (SAD) is a crucial process in the development of software systems. The impact of modeling techniques and software engineering practices on SAD has been the focus of research for many years. ...System analysis and design (SAD) is a crucial process in the development of software systems. The impact of modeling techniques and software engineering practices on SAD has been the focus of research for many years. Two such techniques that have had a significant impact on SAD are Unified Modeling Language (UML) and machine learning. UML has been used to model the structure and behavior of software systems, while machine learning has been used to automatically learn patterns in data and make predictions. The purpose of this paper is to review the literature on the impact of UML and machine learning on SAD. We summarize the findings from several studies and highlight the key insights related to the benefits and limitations of these techniques for SAD. Our review shows that both UML and machine learning have had a positive impact on SAD, with UML improving communication and documentation, and machine learning improving the accuracy of predictions. However, there are also challenges associated with their use, such as the need for expertise and the difficulty of interpreting machine learning models. Our findings suggest that a combination of UML and machine learning can enhance SAD by leveraging the strengths of each technique.展开更多
