Impact of countdown signals on traffic safety and efficiency:a review and proposal

Countdown signals for motorized vehicles,which are intended to ensure safety on the road and regulate motor vehicle speed limits at road intersections,are still considered a relatively novel concept.These signals have been adopted by only a few countries,and the number of cities that use them is limited.This review aims to summarize the effects of countdown signals on traffic safety and efficiency and to determine the consistency and differences of existing research propositions on the matter.Based on the review,considerable research presents evidently different conclusions in the areas of driver red-light running and traffic safety.Particularly,some studies propose that countdown signals reinforce traffic safety,whereas others consider that such signals adversely affect traffic safety.Meanwhile,related literature provides varying conclusions on the aspect of traffic efficiency for vehicle headway.At present,the number of studies conducted regarding the driving behaviors of motorists toward countdown-signalized intersections is insufficient.Accordingly,such inadequate diversity in research causes difficulty in completely assessing the benefits and disadvantages of countdown signals.In this paper,an important future research direction on microcosmic driving psychological and physiological data combined with macro-driving behavior is proposed. 展开更多

This study presents an order exponential model for estimating road traffic safety in city clusters.The proposed model introduces the traffic flow intrinsic properties and uses the characteristics and regular patterns of traffic development to identify road traffic safety levels in city clusters.Additionally,an evaluation index system of city cluster road traffic safety was constructed based on the spatial and temporal distribution.Then Order Exponential Evaluation Model(OEEM),a comprehensive model using order exponent function for road traffic safety evaluation,was put forward,which considers the main characteristics and the generation process of traffic accidents.The model effectively controlled the unsafe behavior of the traffic system.It could define the levels of city cluster road traffic safety and dynamically detect road safety risk.The proposed model was verified with statistical data from three Chinese city clusters by comparing the common model for road traffic safety with an ideal model.The results indicate that the order exponent approach undertaken in this study can be extended and applied to other research topics and fields. 展开更多

Traffic Conflict Technique Development for Traffic Safety Evaluation under Mixed Traffic Conditions of Developing Countries

In developing countries, the numbers of traffic accidents, injuries and fatalities are very high and tend to increase atsignalized intersections. For example, in Ho Chi Minh City (HCMC) of Vietnam, the number of accidents at signalized intersectionsaccounted for 45% of the total accidents at all the intersections. This fact leads to strong necessity for analyzing traffic safety atsignalized intersections. Nevertheless, the historical accident data in HCMC is not available for deep analysis, this study uses videocameras to capture and analyze conflicts that potentially lead to accidents using TCT (traffic conflict technique). Conflict severityidentification is one of the most significant steps to evaluate traffic safety at signalized intersections using TCT. Six zones (seriousconflict, common conflict, non-conflict, highest potential serious conflict, potential serious conflict, and potential common conflict) areexplored in this study to clarify conflict severity. This result is based on being the cut off value between serious conflicts and commonconflicts, according to 85% cumulative frequency of TTC (time to collision) and CS (conflict speed) under 3,050 samples size whichwere observed at 10 signalized intersections during August-November, 2014. Such a deep understanding is a scientific basis to studyhow to apply TCT to evaluate traffic safety at signalized intersections under mixed traffic conditions. 展开更多

An application result shows that the the proposed method is effective in assessment of the traffic safety of ships, and it is more simple in computation than the fuzzy synthetic evaluation method. This paper describes traffic safety approach for developing countries through advanced country historical experience analysis.As for traffic safety analysis,Smeed’s Law is chosen in which number of fatal accidents is function of population and number of vehicles.These parameters in Smeed’s Law only affect growing fatal accidents number as each country because there is no parameter which reduces fatal accidents number in the equation.Author improves Smeed’s Law by adding infrastructure parameter i.e.traffic signal installation.There are also many parameters to be considered such as traffic regulation,education,traffic information equipment,etc.Author chooses traffic signal installation as a representative parameter in this research.By using Japanese historical records,author analyzes the traffic signal installation effectiveness as a fatality reduction parameter with“enhanced Smeed’s Law”.After defining traffic safety parameter by enhanced Smeed’s Law,author applies enhanced Smeed’s Law to Indian case.According to new analysis with enhanced Smeed’s Law,author shows that traffic signal installation is required for reduction of fatal accidents but it effects for reducing fatal accidents growing speed.For the reduction of Indian fatal accidents,it is able to explain that it is necessary to add some more traffic safety policy such as introducing more intelligent traffic signal control based on Japanese traffic safety policy which has been executed during Japanese history by the enhanced Smeed’s Law analysis. 展开更多

Uncovering the influence of ChatGPT's prompts on traffic safety information using text mining approach

ChatGPT has emerged as a promising advanced large language model that needs prompt to gain information.However,designing a good prompt is not an easy task for many end-users.Therefore,this study intends to determine the amount of information gained because of varied amounts of information in the prompt.This study used two types of prompts,initial and improved,to query the introduction sections of 327 highly cited articles on traffic safety.The queried introduction sections were then matched with the corresponding human-written introduction sections from the same articles.Similarity tests and text network analysis were used to understand the level of similarities and the content of ChatGPT-generated and human-written introductions.The findings indicate the improved prompts,which have the addition of generic persona and information about the citations and references,changed the ChatGPT's output insignificantly.While the perfect similar contents are supposed to have a 1.0 similarity score,the initial and improved prompt's introduction materials have average similarity scores of 0.5387 and 0.5567,respectively.Further,the content analysis revealed that themes such as statistics,trends,safety measures,and safety technologies are more likely to have high similarity scores,irrespective of the amount of information provided in the prompt.On the other hand,themes such as human behavior,policy and regulations,public perception,and emerging technologies require a detailed level of information in their prompt to produce materials that are close to human-written materials.The prompt engineers can use the findings to evaluate their outputs and improve their prompting skills. 展开更多

To enhance the safety of road traffic operations,this paper proposed a model based on stacking integrated learning utilizing American road traffic accident statistics.Initially,the process involved data cleaning,transformation,and normalization.Subsequently,various classification models were constructed,including logistic regression,k-nearest neighbors,gradient boosting,decision trees,AdaBoost,and extra trees models.Evaluation metrics such as accuracy,precision,recall,F1 score,and Hamming loss were employed.Upon analysis,the passive-aggressive classifier model exhibited superior comprehensive indices compared to other models.Based on the model’s output results,an in-depth examination of the factors influencing traffic accidents was conducted.Additionally,measures and suggestions aimed at reducing the incidence of severe traffic accidents were presented.These findings served as a valuable reference for mitigating the occurrence of traffic accidents. 展开更多

In this work,the primary focus is to identify potential technical risks of Artificial Intel-ligence(AI)-driven operations for the safety monitoring of the air traffic from the perspective of speech communication by studying the representative case and evaluating user experience.The case study is performed to evaluate the AI-driven techniques and applications using objective metrics,in which several risks and technical facts are obtained to direct future research.Considering the safety–critical specificities of the air traffic control system,a comprehensive subjective evaluation is conducted to collect user experience by a well-designed anonymous questionnaire and a face-to-face interview.In this procedure,the potential risks obtained from the case study are confirmed,and the impacts on human working are considered.Both the case study and the evaluation of user experience provide compatible results and conclusions:(A)the proposed solution is promising to improve the traffic safety and reduce the workload by detecting potential risks in advance;(B)the AI-driven techniques and whole diagram are suggested to be enhanced to eliminate the possible distraction to the attention of air traffic controllers.Finally,a variety of strategies and approaches are discussed to explore their capability to advance the proposed solution to industrial practices. 展开更多

A significant proportion of urban crashes,especially serious and fatal crashes,occur at traffic signals.Many of the black-spots in both Australia and New Zealand cities occur at high volume and/or high-speed traffic signals.Given this,crash reduction studies often focus on the major signalised intersections.However,there is limited information that links the phasing configuration,degree of saturation and overall cycle time to crashes.While a number of analysis tools are available for assessing the efficiency of intersections,there are very few tools that can assist engineers in assessing the safety effects of intersection upgrades and new intersections.Safety performance functions have been developed to help quantify the safety impact of various traffic signal phasing configurations and level of intersection congestion at low and high-speed traffic signals in New Zealand and Australia.Data from 238 signalised intersection sites in Auckland,Wellington,Christchurch,Hamilton,Dunedin and Melbourne was used to develop crash prediction models for key crash-causing movements at traffic signals.Different variables(road features)effect each crash type.The models indicate that the safety of intersections can be improved by longer cycle times and longer lost inter-green times,especially all-red time,using fully protected right turns and by extending the length of right turn bays.The exception is at intersections with lots of pedestrians where shorter cycle times are preferred as pedestrian crashes increase with longer wait times.A number of factors have a negative impact on safety including,free left turns,more approach lanes,intersection arms operating near or over capacity in peak periods and higher speed limits. 展开更多

Traffic prediction already plays a significant role in applications like traffic planning and urban management,but it is still difficult to capture the highly non-linear and complicated spatiotemporal correlations of traffic data.As well as to fulfil both long-termand short-termprediction objectives,a better representation of the temporal dependency and global spatial correlation of traffic data is needed.In order to do this,the Spatiotemporal Graph Neural Network(S-GNN)is proposed in this research as amethod for traffic prediction.The S-GNN simultaneously accepts various traffic data as inputs and investigates the non-linear correlations between the variables.In terms of modelling,the road network is initially represented as a spatiotemporal directed graph,with the features of the samples at the time step being captured by a convolution module.In order to assign varying attention weights to various adjacent area nodes of the target node,the adjacent areas information of nodes in the road network is then aggregated using a graph network.The data is output using a fully connected layer at the end.The findings show that S-GNN can improve short-and long-term traffic prediction accuracy to a greater extent;in comparison to the control model,the RMSE of S-GNN is reduced by about 0.571 to 9.288 and the MAE(Mean Absolute Error)by about 0.314 to 7.678.The experimental results on two real datasets,Pe MSD7(M)and PEMS-BAY,also support this claim. 展开更多

Effects of connected automated vehicle on stability and energy consumption of heterogeneous traffic flow system

With the development of intelligent and interconnected traffic system,a convergence of traffic stream is anticipated in the foreseeable future,where both connected automated vehicle(CAV)and human driven vehicle(HDV)will coexist.In order to examine the effect of CAV on the overall stability and energy consumption of such a heterogeneous traffic system,we first take into account the interrelated perception of distance and speed by CAV to establish a macroscopic dynamic model through utilizing the full velocity difference(FVD)model.Subsequently,adopting the linear stability theory,we propose the linear stability condition for the model through using the small perturbation method,and the validity of the heterogeneous model is verified by comparing with the FVD model.Through nonlinear theoretical analysis,we further derive the KdV-Burgers equation,which captures the propagation characteristics of traffic density waves.Finally,by numerical simulation experiments through utilizing a macroscopic model of heterogeneous traffic flow,the effect of CAV permeability on the stability of density wave in heterogeneous traffic flow and the energy consumption of the traffic system is investigated.Subsequent analysis reveals emergent traffic phenomena.The experimental findings demonstrate that as CAV permeability increases,the ability to dampen the propagation of fluctuations in heterogeneous traffic flow gradually intensifies when giving system perturbation,leading to enhanced stability of the traffic system.Furthermore,higher initial traffic density renders the traffic system more susceptible to congestion,resulting in local clustering effect and stop-and-go traffic phenomenon.Remarkably,the total energy consumption of the heterogeneous traffic system exhibits a gradual decline with CAV permeability increasing.Further evidence has demonstrated the positive influence of CAV on heterogeneous traffic flow.This research contributes to providing theoretical guidance for future CAV applications,aiming to enhance urban road traffic efficiency and alleviate congestion. 展开更多

Human normal flora is a source of probiotics.The safety characteristics of a specific isolate determine its application in foods or drugs.The food-borne-pathogen antagonist strain Lactobacillus gasseri HMV18 is one of the isolates from normal human flora.In this work,we assessed the in vitro pH tolerance,bile tolerance,biogenic amine production,mucin utilization,and safety of in vivo administration to mice to evaluate general health,organ-body weight index,organ histopathological change,whether L.gasseri HMV18 can colonize in the gut or modulate the gut microbiota after oral administration.The results suggest that L.gasseri HMV18 can tolerate pH 3 for 2 h,3%bile for 3 h,biogenic amine negative,mucin usage negative,does not encode verified toxins,and cause no visible change in mice's organs.L.gasseri HMV18 might not colonize in mice's gut,but can significantly affect the structure of gut microbiota.A bibliographical survey suggested that there were as few as 8 opportunistic infection cases from 1984 to 2022 and that the possibility for L.gasseri to cause infection is relatively low.Therefore,this work provides a basis for the foods or drugs application of L.gasseri HMV18 and gives a map of experiments for the safety assessment of probiotics. 展开更多
