It is necessary to understand vegetation dynamics and their climatic controls for sustainable ecosystem management. This study examines the vegetation dynamics and the effect of climate change on vegetation growth in the pristine conditions of 58 woodland National Nature Reserves(NNRs)located in the upper Yangtze River basin(UYRB)in China which are little influenced by human activities.Changes in the normalized difference vegetation index(NDVI),precipitation, and temperature in the selected NNRs were observed and analyzed for the period between 1999 and 2015.The relationship between time-lag effect of climate and changes in the NDVI were assessed using Pearson correlations. The results showed three major trends.1)The NDVI increased during the study period;this indicates an increase in the amount of green vegetation, especially due to the warmer climate during the growing season. The NDVIs in March and September were significantly affected by the temperature of the previous months.Spring temperatures increased significantly(P<0.05)and there was a delay between climatic factors and their effect on vegetation, which depended on the previous season. In particular, the spring temperature had a delayed effect on the NDVI in summer.2)The way in which vegetation responds to climatic factors varied significantly across the seasons.Temperature had a greater effect on the NDVI in spring and summer and the effect was greater at higher altitudes.A similar trend was observed for precipitation, except for altitudes of 1000–2000 m.3)Temperature had a greater effect on the NDVI in spring and autumn at higher altitudes. The same trend was observed for precipitation in summer. These findings suggest that the vegetation found in NNRs in the upper reaches of the Yangtze River was in good condition between 1999 and 2015 and that the growth and development of vegetation in the region has not been adversely affected by climate change. This demonstrates the effectiveness of nature reserves in protecting regional ecology and minimizing anthropogenic effects. 展开更多

Hydrological events should be described through several correlated variables, so multivariate HFA has gained popularity and become an active research field during recent years. However, at present multivariate HFA mainly focuses directly on fitting the frequency distribution without confirming whether the assumptions are satisfied. Neglecting testing these assumptions could get severely wrong frequency distribution. This paper uses multivariate Mann-Kendal testing to detect the multivariate trends of annual flood peak and annual maximum 15 day volume for four control hydrological stations in the?Upper Yangtze River Basin. Results indicate that multivariate test could detect the trends of joint variables, whereas univariate tests can only detect the univariate trends. Therefore, it is recommended to jointly apply univariate and multivariate trend tests to capture all the existing trends. 展开更多

The upper Yangtze River region is one of the most frequent debris flow areas in China. The study area contains a cascade of six large hydropower stations located along the river with total capacity of more than 70 million kilowatts. The purpose of the study was to determine potential and dynamic differences in debris flow susceptibility and intensity with regard to seasonal monsoon events. We analyzed this region's debris flow history by examining the effective peak acceleration of antecedent earthquakes, the impacts of antecedent droughts, the combined effects of earthquakes and droughts, with regard to topography, precipitation, and loose solid material conditions. Based on these factors, we developed a debris flow susceptibility map. Results indicate that the entire debris flow susceptibility area is 167,500 km^2, of which 26,800 km^2 falls within the high susceptibility area, with 60,900 km^2 in medium and 79,800 km^2 are in low susceptibility areas. Three of the six large hydropower stations are located within the areas with high risk of debris flows. The synthetic zonation map of debris flow susceptibility for the study area corresponds with both the investigation data and actual distribution of debris flows. The results of debris flow susceptibility provide base-line data for mitigating, assessing, controlling and monitoring of debris flows hazards. 展开更多

In this paper, systematic design and act of eco-security is discussed as a focal point of conflict and unrest. The situation of ecosystem, the schematic framework of eco-security design, the main acts of ecosystem improvement, major difficulties and challenges have also been analyzed. The purpose of this study was to formulate the systematic framework of eco-security maintenance, to highlight systematic idea or philosophy of ecological rehabilitation and eco-security. A three-dimensional schematic model is applied to design the security of ecosystem. It was concluded that: 1 ) maintaining ecological security requires far better and sophisticated resource management skill and ecological improvement measures, and is also a continuing and multifaceted task. It cannot be permanently accomplished by a single action and program; 2) at present, technical system and policy and law system dimensions of ecological security are not enough even in short; 3)development of ecological industries is beneficial to local economic development and ecosystem protection. 展开更多

Understanding hydrological responses to rising levels of greenhouse gases are essential for climate and impact research. It is,however, often limited by a lack of long record of observational data to provide a basis for understanding the longterm behavior of the climate system.Integrating reconstructed data and(global climate and hydrological)model simulations will help us to better understand the variability of climate and hydrology over timescales ranging from decades to centuries. In this study,we proposed an integrated approach to study flood variability in the upper reach of the Yangtze River over the last millennium to the end of the 21st century. To accomplish this,we first drove hydrological models using the precipitation and temperature from four Global Climate Models(GCM),BCC-CSM1.1,MIROC,MRI-CGCM3,and CCSM4,to simulate daily discharge for the upper reach of the Yangtze River during the period of the last millennium(850–1849),historical period(1850–2005),and a future period(2006–2099).Then,we evaluated whether the modeled precipitation, temperature, and extreme discharge had statistical properties similar to those shown in the documented dry-wet periods, temperature anomalies, and paleoflood records. Finally,we explored the extreme discharge variability using model simulations. The results indicate that:(1)The MIROC-ESM model, differing from the other three GCM models, revealed positive temperature changes from the warm period(Medieval Climate Anomaly;MCA)to the cold period(Little Ice Age;LIA),while the temperature variability of the other models was similar to the records.(2)The BCC-CSM1.1 model performed better than the others regarding correlations between modeled precipitation and documented dry-wet periods.(3)Over most of the subbasins in the upper Yangtze River, the magnitude of extreme discharge in the BCC-CSM1.1 model results showed that there was a decrease from the MCA to the LIA period and an increase in the historical period relative to the cold period, while a future increase was projected by the four GCMs under the influence of climate change. 展开更多

Plate subduction leads to complex exhumation processes on continents. The Huangling Massif lies at the northern margin of the South China Block.Whether the Huangling Massif was exhumed as a watershed of the middle reaches of the Paleo-Yangtze River during the Mesozoic remains under debate. We examined the exhumation history of the Huangling Massif based on six granite bedrock samples, using apatite fission track(AFT)and apatite and zircon(U-Th)/He(AHe and ZHe)thermochronology. These samples yielded ages of 157–132 Ma(ZHe),119–106 Ma(AFT),and 114–72 Ma(AHe),respectively.Thermal modeling revealed that three phases of rapid cooling occurred during the Late Jurassic–Early Cretaceous, late Early Cretaceous, and Late Cretaceous. These exhumation processes led to the high topographic relief responsible for the emergence of the Huangling Massif. The integrated of our new data with published sedimentological records suggests that the Huangling Massif might have been the watershed of the middle reaches of the Paleo-Yangtze River since the Cretaceous. At that time, the rivers flowed westward into the Sichuan Basin and eastward into the Jianghan Basin. The subduction of the Pacific Plate beneath the Asian continent in the Mesozoic deeply influenced the geomorphic evolution of the South China Block. 展开更多

In the summer of 2022,China(especially the Yangtze River Valley,YRV)suffered its strongest heatwave(HW)event since 1961.In this study,we examined the influences of multiscale variabilities on the 2022 extreme HW in the lower reaches of the YRV,focusing on the city of Shanghai. We found that about 1/3 of the 2022 HW days in Shanghai can be attributed to the long-term warming trend of global warming.During mid-summer of 2022,an enhanced western Pacific subtropical high(WPSH)and anomalous double blockings over the Ural Mountains and Sea of Okhotsk, respectively, were associated with the persistently anomalous high pressure over the YRV,leading to the extreme HW.The Pacific Decadal Oscillation played a major role in the anomalous blocking pattern associated with the HW at the decadal time scale. Also, the positive phase of the Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation may have contributed to regulating the formation of the double-blocking pattern.Anomalous warming of both the warm pool of the western Pacific and tropical North Atlantic at the interannual time scale may also have favored the persistency of the double blocking and the anomalously strong WPSH.At the subseasonal time scale, the anomalously frequent phases 2-5 of the canonical northward propagating variability of boreal summer intraseasonal oscillation associated with the anomalous propagation of a weak Madden-Julian Oscillation suppressed the convection over the YRV and also contributed to the HW.Therefore, the 2022 extreme HW originated from multiscale forcing including both the climate warming trend and air-sea interaction at multiple time scales. 展开更多

The prediction of summer precipitation over the Yangtze River basin(YRB)has long been challenging, especially during June-July(JJ),when the mei-yu generally occurs. This study explores the potential signal for the YRB precipitation in JJ and reveals that the Tibetan Plateau tropospheric temperature(TPTT)in the middle and upper levels during the preceding December-January(DJ)is significantly correlated with JJ YRB precipitation. The close connection between the DJ TPTT anomaly with JJ YRB precipitation may be due to the joint modulation of the DJ ENSO and spring TP soil temperatures. The lagged response to an anomalously cold TPTT during the preceding DJ is a TPTT that is still anomalously cold during the following JJ.The lower TPTT can lead to an anomalous anticyclone to the east of Lake Baikal,an anomalous cyclone at the middle latitudes of East Asia, and an anomalous anticyclone over the western North Pacific.Meanwhile, the East Asian westerly jet shifts southward in response to the meridional thermal gradient caused by the colder troposphere extending from the TP to the east of Lake Baikal. The above-mentioned circulation anomalies constitute the positive anomaly of the East Asia-Pacific pattern, known to be conducive to more precipitation over the YRB.Since the DJ TPTT contains both the land(TP soil temperature)and ocean(ENSO)signals,it has a closer relationship with the JJ precipitation over the YRB than the DJ ENSO alone. Therefore, the preceding DJ TPTT can be considered an alternative predictor of the JJ YRB precipitation. 展开更多

Suspended sediment concentrations in the Middle Yangtze River(MYR)reduced greatly after the Three Gorges Project operation, causing the composition of bed material to coarsen continuously. However, little is known about the non-equilibrium transport of graded suspended sediment owing to different bed material compositions(BMCs)along the MYR,and it is necessary to determine the magnitude of recovery factor.Using the Markov stochastic process in conjunction with the hiding-exposure effect of non-uniform bed-material,a new formula is proposed for calculating the recovery factor including the effect of different BMCs,and it is incorporated into the non-equilibrium transport equation to simulate the recovery processes of suspended load in both sand-gravel bed and sand bed reaches of the MYR.The results show that:(i)the recovery rate of graded sediment concentrations at Zhicheng was slower than that at Shashi during the period 2003-2007;(ii)the mean recovery factors of the coarse, medium, and fine sediment fractions in the ZhichengShashi reach were 0.152,0.0012,and 0.0005,respectively,and the coarse sediment recovered up to the maximum sediment concentration of 0.138 kg/m3over a distance of 15 km;and(iii)the results of the new formula that can consider the effect of bed material composition are in general agreement with the field observations, and the spatial and temporal delay effects are inversely related to particle size and BMC.Consequently, the BMC effect on the nonequilibrium sediment transport in different reaches of the MYR needs to be considered for higher simulation accuracy. 展开更多

Identification of the planation surfaces (PSs)is key for utilizing them as a reference in studying the long- term geomorphological evolution of the Upper Yangtze River Basin in the Sichuan-Yurman region,Southwest China.Using a combined method of DEM-based fuzzy logic and topographic and fiver profiles analysis and based on a comprehensive analysis of four morphometfic parameters:slope, curvature, terrain raggedness index, and relative height,we established the relevant fuzzy membership functions, and then calculated the membership degree (MD)of the study area. Results show that patches with a MD>80% and an area>0.4 km^2 correspond well to the results of Google Earth and field investigation, representing the PS remnants. They consist of 1764 patches with an altitude, area, mean slope, and relief of mostly 2000-2500 m above sea level (asl),0-10 km^2,4°-9°,0-500 m,respectively, covering 9.2% of the study area's landscape, dipping to southeast, decreasing progressively from northwest to southeast in altitude, and with no clear relation between each patch's altitude and slope,or relief. All these results indicate that they are remnants of once regionally continuous PSs which were deformed by both the lower crust flow and the faults in upper crust, and dissected by the network of Upper Yangtze River.Additionally, topographic and river profiles analysis show that three PSs (PS1-PS3)well developed along the main valleys in the Yongren-Huili region, indicating several phases of uplift then planation during the Late Cenozoic era.Based on the incision amount deduced from projection of relict river profiles on PSs, together with erosion rates, breakup times of the PS 1,PS2,and PS3 were estimated to be 3.47 Ma,2.19 Ma,and 1.45 Ma,respectively, indicating appearance of modem Upper Yangtze River valley started between the Pliocene to early Pleistocene. 展开更多

Under increasing anthropogenic pressure, species with a previously contiguous distribution across their ranges have been reduced to small fragmented populations. The critically endangered Yangtze finless porpoise(Neophocaena asiaeorientalis asiaeorientalis),once commonly observed in the Yangtze River-Poyang Lake junction,is now rarely seen in the river-lake corridor. In this study, static passive acoustic monitoring techniques were used to detect the biosonar activities of the Yangtze finless porpoise in this unique corridor.Generalized linear models were used to examine the correlation between these activities and anthropogenic impacts from the COVID-19 pandemic lockdown and boat navigation,as well as environmental variables, including hydrological conditions and light levels.Over approximately three consecutive years of monitoring(2020–2022),porpoise biosonar was detected during 93%of logged days, indicating the key role of the corridor for finless porpoise conservation. In addition, porpoise clicks were recorded in 3.80%of minutes, while feeding correlated buzzes were detected in 1.23%of minutes, suggesting the potential existence of localized,small-scale migration.Furthermore, both anthropogenic and environmental variables were significantly correlated with the diel, lunar, monthly, seasonal, and annual variations in porpoise biosonar activities.During the pandemic lockdown period, porpoise sonar detection showed a significant increase.Furthermore,a significant negative correlation was identified between the detection of porpoise click trains and buzzes and boat traffic intensity. In addition to water level and flux, daylight and moonlight exhibited significant correlations with porpoise biosonar activities, with markedly higher detections at night and quarter moon periods.Ensuring the spatiotemporal reduction of anthropogenic activities, implementing vessel speed restrictions(e.g.,during porpoise migration and feeding),and maintaining local natural hydrological regimes are critical factors for sustaining porpoise population viability. 展开更多

Froude similitude and friction similitude are the two crucial similarity conditions that are often used in physical-scale modeling of rivers. However, models often deviate from Froude similitude when dealing with real-world situations. This study developed several fixed-bed river models with various curvatures to determine the effect of Froude similitude deviation on curved channel modeling.Models were constructed according to the characteristics of the Middle Yangtze River.Differences in longitudinal slope, transverse slope, and main stream line location were measured by varying Froude similitude deviation. The deviations of longitudinal slope and velocity were negligible because friction similitude was accounted for.The transverse slope varied significantly with the Froude similitude deviation, and the main stream line varied with the curvature and Froude similitude deviation.Formulae were derived to estimate the slope deviation. These analyses helped to clarify the feasibility of the method of Froude similitude deviation for curved channels. 展开更多

The Yangtze River Basin(YRB)is an important region for China's economic development. However,it has a complex terrain layout, most of which is affected by monsoon weather, and the geographical and temporal distribution of water resources is severely unbalanced. Therefore, the detailed analysis of spatio-temporal water mass changes is helpful to the development and rational utilization of water resources in the YRB.In this study, the variation of terrestrial water storage(TWS)is monitored by Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment(GRACE)satellite gravity. We find that the University of Texas Center for Space Research(CSR)solution shows a notable difference with the Jet Propulsion Laboratory(JPL)in space, but the general trend is consistent in time series. Then the GRACE inferred water mass variation reveals that the YRB has experienced several drought and flood events over the past two decades.Global Land Data Assimilation System(GLDAS)results are similar to GRACE.Furthermore, the overall precipitation trend tends to be stable in space, but it is greatly influenced by the strong El Nino-~Southern Oscillation(ENSO),which is the response to global climate change. The upper YRB is less affected by ENSO and shows a more stable water storage signal with respect to the lower YRB. 展开更多

Using geographic information system (GIS) techniques and the newest seasonal and annual average precipitation data of 679 meteorological stations from 1971 to 2000, the multiple regressions equations of the precipitation and topographical variables are established to extract the effect of topography on the annual and seasonal precipitation in the upper-middle reaches of the Yangtze River. Then, this paper uses a successive interpolation approach (SIA), which combines GIS techniques with the multiple regressions, to improve the accuracy of the spatial interpolation of annual and seasonal rainfall. The results are very satisfactory in the case of seasonal rainfall, with the relative error of 6.86%, the absolute error of 13.07 mm, the average coefficient of variation of 0.070, and the correlation coefficient of 0.9675; in the case of annual precipitation, with the relative error of 7.34%, the absolute error of 72.1 mm, the average coefficient of variation of 0.092, and the correlation coefficient of 0.9605. The analyses of annual mean precipitation show that the SIA calculation of 3-5 steps considerably improves the interpolation accuracy, decreasing the absolute error from 211.0 mm to 62.4 mm, the relative error from 20.74% to 5.97%, the coefficient of variation from 0.2312 to 0.0761, and increasing the correlation coefficient from 0.5467 to 0.9619. The SIA iterative results after 50 steps identically converge to the observed precipitation. 展开更多

Complex hydrocultural conditions in the estuary affect the migration and transformation of mercury.Using two voyages in July and October 2018,Dissolved Gaseous Mercury(DGM)and Reactive Mercury(RHg)were determined to explore the source, transformation and influence of DGM content in the adjacent waters of Yangtze River Estuary in summer and autumn. The results showed the contents of DGM and RHg in summer were higher than those in autumn, and both of them were higher than those in open sea.In summer and autumn, the Yangtze River brought a higher concentration of DGM,and different flow direction and runoff resulted in differences in the high value region of the surface. The emergence of low-oxygen zones in summer was conducive to the production of DGM.In autumn, windy weather allowed seawater disturbances to promote the release of mercury from the underlying sediments, especially in shallow sea in northwest.RHg showed a higher concentration in the offshore than in the open sea in summer, but there was no such trend in autumn, reflecting the influence of less runoff input.DGM is the main product of RHg reduction, and there was a significant positive correlation between DGM and RHg in summer(r=0.356,P<0.05),while the correlation between DGM and RHg was not significant in autumn due to the influence of light intensity, wind speed and nutrients. The exchange flux of mercury in the adjacent waters of the Yangtze River Estuary was higher than that in the open sea. There was no significant difference of the release flux of mercury in summer and autumn. This article highlighted that the input of mercury from the Yangtze River runoff promotes the release of mercury in seawater, and the hypoxic zone caused by eutrophication is conducive to the production of DGM. 展开更多
